Barcaldine Primary school children were invited along to Sutherland’s Grove on Tuesday afternoon to help plant Coastal Red Woods trees.
The weather was a bit wet to start but it soon dried up and the children along with Forestry Commission Scotland Craftsmen’s Peter MacArthur and Rory Maclean spent a couple of hours planting trees.

Skipping for the British Heart Foundation
On Friday 21st March, staff and pupils took part in a sponsored skip-athon to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Children had practised skipping as part of their P.E. lessons in the run up to the event and then took part in a variety of skipping events during the day itself, culminating in a whole school mass skip at lunchtime. On the 14/15th March, 43 pupils from 5 schools (Park, Rockfield, St Columba’s, Lochnell and Oban High) enjoyed a Premiership Experience football weekend in Newcastle and Sunderland. Over the weekend the boys and girls enjoyed a stadium tour of St James’ Park, a training session with Newcastle United coaches and watched Sunderland v Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light. The pupils had a great time meeting and mixing with pupils from other schools. The photo was taken during the stadium tour.
Last Thursday 27th March Islay Schools Bands held a fantastic concert, normally it is only the High School Band and the Primary Schools Band (children from all Primaries on Islay & Jura) but a brand new after school Band was formed last year to give younger children a chance to begin learning an instrument from Primary 3. They are called “Ceol na Cloinne” (Music of the Children) and they meet at Islay High School every Friday. Monday 31 March 2014 saw P7 children of St Joseph’s welcome a very important visitor to their class, Ms Jackie Baillie, MSP. Jackie was there to bring a personal dimension to P7’s Interdisciplinary Learning Study, ‘The Scottish Parliament’. But if Jackie thought this was to be an easy question and answer session, she was to be surprised! P7 asked several deep and searching questions and their teacher, Miss Claire Boyd, was delighted with how eloquently the children addressed their questions and how they also came back at Ms Baillie on her responses.

Barcaldine Primary School recently went along to Tesco in Oban to take part in their Farm to Food workshop.
The school children were met by Nicola Robertson who was wearing a lovely, bright yellow apron – certainly a beacon to follow because Tesco is huge!
In Primary Five at Kirn we have been reading ‘Really Weird Removals.com’ as our novel study this term, and have used the story as the inspiration for creating film adverts, life size characters, emails and much more. So, how exciting to be able to meet the author, Daniela Sacerdoti, in person in our own classroom!

Saturday 29 March, 2014 was a ‘first’ for St Joseph’s Primary School choir. Aptly named ‘St Joseph’s Dynamic Diamonds’, the children sang for the first time with LoCCo – Lomond and Clyde Community Orchestra – for the community of Helensburgh at the Victoria Halls.

Entries for the Helensburgh Rotary Club Young Photographer Competition 2014 were judged on 22 March, 2014 and St Joseph’s came out tops….for the second year running! Last year St Joseph’s had two winners in the Junior Category and this year again we had two prize winners in the Junior Section; one child won (age 7) third prize with one child (age 9) taking the top prize.
The annual P7 Rotary Quiz for South Kintyre Cluster schools took place last week, with Dalintober PS teams finishing first and second overall. The winning team will now go on to represent the area in the national finals in Glasgow in June.
Months of hard work from 4 pupils at Hermitage Primary paid off when they won the area heat of the Euro Quiz. Isabel, Anna, Emily and Esther will now head to the Scottish Parliament in May to represent Argyll and Bute in the finals.
On Tuesday 18th March Keills Primary 5 -7 made a Commonwealth Banner. Sian McQueen, an artist from the mainland, helped us make it. First we discussed what things made Scotland unique. Once we had enough ideas we organised ourselves into groups – a border group, an iconic images group, and a slogan group. We then planned what we were going to do. Kevin McLeod, author of The Viking’s Apprentice, paid a visit to Strath of Appin Primary School last week. The children have been reading his novel in class and were delighted when he agreed to visit the school to talk about his work. The children enjoyed a question and answer session with Kevin who then read some more of his story to the children. Three lucky pupils received special art work from Kevin’s second book and he kindly donated two copies of his book to the school library. The children are now eager to read the sequeal to The Viking’s Apprentice and find out how the plot develops in this fast-moving adventure story. Members of Islay High School Band and the Primary Schools Band travelled to Glasgow last Thursday 20th March. While we were in Glasgow the children heard and worked with world class professional musicians, and had a fantastic tour of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Both Bands also competed at the Mid Argyll Music Festival and played very well indeed, and as an added bonus the Primary Band was awarded the” Helen & Hugh Smith Trophy”. The photo was taken on the steps of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Dalintober PS recently supported two ‘sporty’ events. P6 and P7 pupils completed a one mile run for ‘Sport Relief’ and all pupils donned their sports’ shoes for ‘Sport Your Trainers Day 2014’ for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games – participating in a range of sports and activities. P5-7 travelled to Oban High School to take part in this years gymnastics festival. With guidance from Mrs Liz Clunie our PE specialist, all pupils in P5-7 have been working hard to create fantastic routines, supporting one another and giving constructive feedback. Three groups from Easdale performed on the day and one of our groups were awarded 1st place in the rural schools category. All three groups performed very well. The children also enjoyed watching performances from Oban High School pupils.
Primary 3 in Park Primary School have been learning all about the Ancient Greeks this term! They found out where and when they lived, what their lives were like and how they have influenced our lives today. As a final outcome the children planned and hosted an Ancient Greek Day on Tuesday 25th March to share their learning with their families. On the 19th March 2014, Colgrain’s Primary 7 pupils spent the day at Park Church learning all about the Easter Story. When we arrived Andy Lang had made an Easter quiz for us to participate in. There were five different workshops held by several volunteers. The workshops included designing our own crucifixion cross to decorate the school hall with, getting our feet washed to represent Jesus cleaning his disciples’ feet, watching an Easter video which taught us about the sentence Jesus was given and lastly about the last supper.

On the evening of Friday 14th March , Colgrain Primary School competed in the Lomond Netball Tournament. The tournament took place at Lomond Sports Hall. Everyone displayed excellent team spirit and gave 100%! We came an astounding 1st place, after competing against very strong teams. Thank you to Mrs Cormack and Mrs Jack for helping us to achieve this!
