‘Clyde’ the official Glasgow Commonwealth Games Mascot visits Furnace and Minard Primaries

On Friday the 1st of March we had a visit from Clyde to Furnace Primary. The children from Minard joined in the fun. We learned about how the mascot was ‘created’ and about the different sports which will be part of the Commonwealth games. Clyde then played a game of rounders with the children and there were lots of ‘high fives’ with him! He even raced the teachers, which was fun for all those watching!

Barcaldine – Big Pedal 2013

Barcaldine Primary School are again participating in The Big Pedal 2013.

The Big Pedal is a giant inter-school virtual cycling competition running from 28th February until 20 March 2013. It works a bit like the Tour de France but in the UK we are following Sustrans cycle routes around Great Britain.

WOW @ Lochnell

Pupils at Lochnell Primary School were thrilled to receive a visit from Chris Thompson of Living Streets, who congratulated them on all the great work they had put in to their walk once a week campaign over the last two years. After informing them they had won an award for being school of the month, he set them the challenge of increasing the number of WOW (Walk once a Week) awards earned.

Barcaldine Primary, visit by Sharon MacKechnie

Barcaldine Primary School was very fortunate to have Sharon MacKechnie for the day on Monday 25th February.

We spent most of the day in Sutherland’s Grove completing a variety of challenges. Team work involved us leading our group through a chosen path. Tarbert Academy Champions in Schools

Tarbert Academy is taking part in the national initiative Champions in Schools.

This initiative links sports champions with schools. Tarbert Academy has been linked with Judo and Wrestling Commonwealth Games Medallists Donna and Fiona Robertson originally from Campbeltown.

Campbeltown Grammar School Champions in School

Campbeltown Grammar School is once again taking part in the national programme Champions in Schools.

The programme teams up sports champions with schools to inspire pupils in setting their own goals and personal targets and aspiring to meet these. The Grammar School is proud to have been teamed up with champions who are in fact former pupils of the school – Donna and Fiona Robertson who are both Commonwealth Games medallists. ROSNEATH ARE FUNKY AND FIT

We recently enjoyed a whole day of games and exercises with Julie from Funky Fitness. We know how important it is to try and keep fit and healthy. All classes had a 45 minute session.
Julie said, “A fun and fitness filled day! I loved seeing all the children enjoying my exercises and getting involved in the games. Everyone at Rosneath Primary made me feel so welcome and we all finished up with rosy cheeks and a smile on our face!!”

Club Golf at Dalintober PS.


Primary 5 pupils at Dalintober PS have been receiving Club Golf lessons from our Active Schools Co-ordinator, Lindsay Ramsay.   Pupils are enjoying the sessions and are learning techniques to help them when they hit the local golf courses!   This is part of a programme that has also seen senior pupils receive tuition in shinty and rugby from Development Officers Ewan McMurdo and Allan Wright. Staff Training

It was time for some real, practical learning for the staff of St Joseph’s as they worked hard with Martin Caldwell, the area Active Schools Co-ordinator on athletics training during the INSET day on Friday.  The school had received a generous grant from Awards for All for new PE equipment and excellent athletics resources were welcomed at the school.  Martin did a sterling job of putting us all through our paces and the staff were inspired and motivated to further develop athletics training in school with some brand new equipment.

Cardross Primary Garscube Harriers Schools Cross Country Races 2012

Cardross Primary finished on top at the recent Garscube Harriers Scottish Schools Cross Country Races on the 11th November.  The primary six boys won their age group finishing in 6th, 7th and 11th place ahead of strong teams from The Glasgow Academy and The High School of Glasgow.   Many of the girls also put in strong individual performances and Mrs Girling and Mrs Davis were delighted with the results. Dunoon Grammar School Pupils Go for Gold!

On Wednesday, 12 September 2012, Dunoon Grammar School played host to its very own Olympic Games. The Games were officially opened by a performance from Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band. Then the Games began. Around one hundred pupils took part in the 7 events that were on offer. These events were the 90m, 200m, 800m, Shot Put, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump.

Originally planned to take place in June, the Games were held in order to raise awareness of the Olympics, their history and their values. It also allowed the competitive edge of the new house system to come out and gave everyone involved a fun filled afternoon.

Dalintober’s Mini-Olympics

Dalintober PS held a Mini-Olympics event on Wednesday 28thJune.   Primary 7 organised the event with the help of Mr Kupris from Active Schools.  All the pupils in the school were divided into one of five countries – Great Britain, Greece, China, Spain or Jamaica – and wore colours to represent each country.

Mid Argyll Children Celebrate World Sports Day

A huge gathering of 400 children came together on Monday 25th June at Lochgilphead Joint Campus to celebrate World Sports Day.  Aged between 5 and 12 years, the children took part in a raft of sports, all skilfully organised by Jillian Gibson, Mid Argyll’s awesome Active Schools Coordinator.  The children, ably assisted by sports instructors, teachers, S4-6 students, classroom assistants and parent helpers, took part in shinty, rugby, football, handball, hockey, games and the annual inter-school relay races.

Orienteering event at Castle Toward

On Thursday 31st May 2012 Toward Primary School, Fiona MacLean (PE Teacher) and Lindsay Mitchell (Active Schools) hosted an Orienteering Event at Castle Toward. This annual event gives P7 pupils from throughout Cowal the opportunity to participate in a challenging and energetic event where they have to use the skills they have been taught by reading maps, using compasses and getting lots of exercise. Olympic Themed Youth Games in Oban

A spectacle of dance, music and colour, inspired by the Olympic Games was showcased at the opening ceremony of the Argyll and Bute Youth Games in Oban on Thursday 14th June.
A record 598 of our first and second year pupils from Argyll and Bute’s secondary schools staged their own version of the Olympics to welcome in Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week.

CHRISTIAN AID NETBALL TOURNAMENT

Rosneath Primary School were very excited to be taking part in this annual Tournament at the Lomond Sports Hall in Helensburgh. We played against teams from other Helensburgh and Peninsula schools. We were DELIGHTED that our little school won a Bronze medal. We played our hearts out and everyone is SO proud of us. Our joint Team Captains look so happy and the main point of the evening was that everyone had great fun meeting up together and cheering each other on. Joint Sports Activities Day.

Children from Kilninver, Easdale and Luing primary schools came together for a sports activity day.
Following a day of activity the children won the tug of war hands down, pulling the teachers clean off their feet
We are sure they wouldn’t have managed it if there hadn’t been 80 of them.

ROSNEATH RAMBLERS

Hello, we are Primary 7  at Rosneath Primary School and we love learning in the great outdoors.  We call ourselves Rosneath Ramblers and every Wednesday we go out walking/hiking in different locations.
We would like to share our experiences with you.  We have already hiked from Rosneath to Kilcreggan and back.  We have been to the local woods – Clachan Glen and yesterday we hiked to The Trig Point in Kilcreggan.  When we are out and about we do various activities, enjoying in particular building shelters.
