Researching in P3
As part of our Romans topic, we have been working in groups to research different aspects of Roman life. The “mini topics” that we were looking into were food and drink, clothes, houses, school, buildings, leisure, Gods and Goddesses and inventions.
We used our non-fiction reading skills to look in books to find interesting facts and then practiced note-taking by writing down the information we found. Then we used these notes to make our own non-fiction posters, leaflets and booklets to share the information with everyone else. We then presented our information to our classmates – we were the teachers!
We really enjoyed being responsible for our own learning and sharing what we discovered with everyone. This was a super way to finish our topic on Romans.
P6; a busy few weeks!
P6 have had a busy few weeks and are now preparing and thinking about our responsibilities when we start P7. Most of us have been given a new P1 as a buddy; some of us met our buddy last week and enjoyed getting to know them. We have discussed the responsibilities that go with this job and we are all committed to ensuring that our new buddy is happy and enjoying their first year at Williamston! The rest of us can’t wait to meet our buddies when they come for their visit in a couple of weeks! In other news, we have been working hard to learn plural rules and apply this in our writing; we have learned 8 different plural rules so far and we all feel much more confident about singular and plural rules! We also enjoyed our recent group activity where we were asked to source materials to make a sukkot. Sukkot commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, and celebrates the way in which God protected them under difficult desert conditions. Jewish families will build an open air structure in which to live during this holiday. The essential thing about the hut is that it should have a roof of branches and leaves, through which those inside can see the sky, and that it should be a temporary and flimsy thing. We think our attempts were very successful, although not life size, this activitiy really helped with our understanding of this Jewish festival.
Pupils Promote New Play Park
Representing Williamston Primary School; Myles, Shirees, Lewis and Halle were out at the latest new park at Bankton Mains today for its official opening. This park was designed in consultation with the pupils here at Williamston Primary School. The park makes use of new ‘Smart Playground’ technology using QR codes to engage children and parents with educational content.
Why not visit the park and see it for yourself. Please tell us what you like about it.
P4 Easter Gardens
In Primary 4 we have been learning about the Christian festival of Easter. We revised the Easter story and found out about Easter customs and their meaning. We were set a group challenge to design, plan and make an Easter Garden. It was great fun collecting the resources and working with our classmates. Skills we developed included creativity, problem-solving and team-work. Take a look at some of our Easter Gardens!
P6 book is complete!
It’s been a busy few weeks in P6 and we are pleased to tell you all that we have now completed our book! The illustrations and story are now complete and on their way to the publisher! We are very excited to see it! The workshops with Mary T Thomson were great; we learnt so much about the process of writing a book. We also learned a lot about ourselves with the the various personality workshops that we took part in when coming up with characters for the book!
We enjoyed our French day, we tasted different French foods, looked at various phrases that we could use and even become impressionists for the day and took inspiration from French artist Monet…photos to follow when our masterpiece is complete! We also made some beautiful European landmark collages as part of our Europe topic, too! We have been working hard in maths, covering lots of concepts, keeping on top of our number work and times tables!
We look forward to our last term in P6, when we will find out news about buddies and take on some big responsibilities! Happy Easter!
P4 Book Project
The deadline for submitting the P4 book to the publishers is fast approaching. Mary Turner Thomson, our author, has sent us a copy of the book with our illustrations inserted and we are now busy editing it. We are also reviewing the story and illustrations sent by our partners in Mumbai. We really can’t wait to see the final product and share it with everyone at our official book launch at the end of April. Watch this space for more details….
P7 are ace at budgeting!
P7 had a great time learning more about budgeting with Mrs Smith from Standard Life. We explored the meaning of income, budget and expenses to help us learn more about managing our money. We explored how income can be used and how we can save money for things like cars and university. We will be able to use these skills now and in the future!
Co-op Easter Art Competition
Primary 7 Rocket Science!
P7 were visited yesterday by Martin Bailey an Engineer from Wyman – Gordon in Livingston. After hearing all about his job and how he became an engineer the pupils had their own chance at designing and building rockets. Pupils were split into groups of three or four and set about creating their own rockets. Each rocket was given an astronaut (an egg, eggstronaut!) which they had to land safely after their launch. After presenting their rockets and features and how they were going to keep their eggstronauts safe they tested their rockets, launching them in the field outside. You will be pleased to hear that all our eggstronauts made it back safely. Well done P7 engineers.
