Outdoor Smiles!

Today, P1/2 were exploring our new vision: ‘Westfield, a place to smile’. After discussing the meaning of Succeed Motivate Inspire Learn Excel, they went outside and used materials found in the school grounds to create a smiling person, to represent our new vision.

Nursery Assembly

On TuesdayĀ weĀ were lucky enough to have two extra helpers, weĀ were joined by a granny of one of our morning childrenĀ and a mum for theĀ afternoon. We’d like to thank them for their support. If any other parents, grandparents or carersĀ wish to come in and help pleaseĀ speak to a member of staff.

Our afternoon mum helped the children to plant onions which was one of their chosen vegetables for our vegetable patch.

On Wednesday our morning children presented an assembly on healthy eating to the school and parents. Ā They were amazing, sharing their favourite healthy food and singing in front of everyone. Well done!

Just a little reminder that in the nursery we are asking for donations of small sunhats/baseball hats. Donations can be handed in at the office or nursery.

Superhero Coffee Morning

Pupils and parents at Westfield Primary enjoyed a successfulĀ Superhero Coffee Morning where monies were raised for Forth Ones Cash for Kids. Pupils from P6/7 helped Mrs Grant and members of the Parent Council to supervise the stalls available. The Tombola and tattoo transfer stalls proved very popular and the cakes were not be missed either.

There were lots of Superheros in attendance Ā so we felt we we in safe hands all morning!!!!

Great fun was had by all and we will be sending just over Ā£200 to the Cash for Kids Appeal!!!!

Please donate old sunhats to the nursery

This week the children in nursery have been enjoyingĀ their increase in outside access, despite the mixed weather. We enjoyed learning in snow, rain, hail and sunshine!

We have plenty of waterproofs in the nursery to help the children enjoy learning outside in wet weather but we were less prepared for the sunshine! The nursery isĀ asking for you to donate any small unwantedĀ sunhats/baseball hats so we can protect littleĀ heads from the sun and enjoy outdoor learningĀ in all weather.

Please enjoy our photo gallery showing some of the learning happening this past week in the nursery.

Free Flow in the Nursery

This week the Nursery has introduced full ‘free flow’ play. This means that the nursery children will have access to the nursery garden for the vast majority of their session.

All the indoor activities have been moved into the large playroom to allow the outside area increased supervision. The garden door will be open during all weathers andĀ children will be able to choose whether they learn and play inside or outside.

ā€œThere is a growing body of research that shows that young childrenā€™s access to nature and outdoor play is positively associated with improved self-esteem, physical health, development of language skills and disposition to learning.ā€ (Davy, 2009 (57))(1)

The children have already been enjoying the greater access to the nursery garden this small change has provided.

We can provide waterproofs for the children on wet days but,Ā to help the smooth running of free flow, parents are being asked to supply their child with a pair of Ā wellies to be left in nursery and ensure they bring a bag with a change of clothes everyday.

Lastly a reminder that you can check out Westfield Nursery’s learning journey, for the term, on our sway.

Nursery Week

Another busy week in the nursery. Some of the activities the children enjoyed included bubble painting.Ā It was tricking remembering to blow through the straw and not suck!

As you can see our broad beans are growing, some children measured them and compared the sizes of the plants.

A number of children created a band and made a stage from the blocks. They practiced their rhythm using different instruments.

The children also enjoyed developingĀ their math skills using a maths game on the smart board.

The children carried on taking responsibility for clearing and washing their own plates at snack time.

Nursery Week

This has been a busy week in the Nursery. Children have enjoyed lots of different learning activities from painting to making beanstalks forĀ Jack, from Jack and the Beanstalk, to climb.

Some children even decided to makeĀ volcanoes from junk.

Ā

The children also voted for theĀ healthy vegetables they want to grow in the vegetable patch.

The morning children will be growingĀ pumpkins, carrots and potatoes, while the afternoon children voted to plantĀ peas, beetroot, onions and lettuce.

Please check out sway for more details.

Nursery Garden

Work on improving the nursery garden is well under way. Mrs Alexander has been extremely busy. She has already recycled someĀ old tyres and turned them into all small wall around the vegetable patch.

The vegetable patch has also been dug over ready for planting. The children have been discussing what plants they would like to grow and will soon vote on their choices.

Mrs Alexander has alsoĀ trimmedĀ and reshaped Ā the willow dome for us.

Mrs Alexander has been coming in in her free time to get all this work finished. Thank you Mrs Alexander for all your hard work!

Nursery Week

Lots of diferent learning has taken place in the Nursery class this week. Some of the learning is detailed below.

Children have been continuing theirĀ learn about healthy food (see Sway for more detail).

ChildrenĀ have been busy enjoying learning in the messy area, the new water tray Ā is proving very popular.

Some children have been using colourful teddies toĀ help them learn aboutĀ repeated patterns and how they have an order, or rule, that can be followed.

Some pre-school children had vision test this week and Ā two pupils headed straight to the writing area and started making their own eye tests, the Optometrist was very impressed she commented that she had never known children to do that before!

The children have also been using our new wooden characters to help extend their learning. They enjoy using the characters to retell the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Please remember to check out our Sway where you can find out about the childrenĀ planting broad beans.
