PE in P4

This week in P4 we have been focusing on our throwing, catching skills, while working on our dodging and spacial awareness. These skills are coming in useful as we take part in the competitive team game of Benchball.

Also this week we have been learning some new Ceilidh dances in preparation for our Christmas party. We found the turns in the Gay Gordons tricky, and the Military Two Step was too fast to begin with, but after some practice, we are very proud to say we have cracked it! We are looking forward to learning more dances next week!

Learning in P4

Primary 4 are continuing to work hard out of school on their home learning tasks this month.

Wyatt worked hard to create a Fort using recyclable materials. He worked to ensure he included even the little details of the weapons and animals inside.

Mrs Black had a lovely surprise on her desk this week left by a very kind pupil. As well as being a thoughtful gesture, it helped to remember the importance of the poppy and all that it stands for.

Where Does Food Come From?

In P4 we have been learning about food and where it comes from. All food comes from either a plant or an animal. We had fun tasting some foods to decide where they came from and using a Hedonic scale to rate them.

There were some tricky foods, which we couldn’t decide on. We had to work our way back from pasta and bread to dough and flour, to wheat, to confirm that these foods came from plants. Chocolate was one food that almost caught us out – it comes from a plant and an animal – cocoa bean from a plant and the milk from a cow (animal)! Sneaky!

The Romans

P4 have been investigating the past and developing their knowledge of the Romans. They have been very busy with their homework tasks over the last few weeks and have been taking on all kinds of learning challenges.

One of our pupils has been to visit the Antonine wall as part of his home learning.  He confidently shared his learning with the class through his photographs of what he had seen and read. Did you know the Antonine wall was built to extend Roman Britannia north from Hadrian’s Wall? The wall was designed as a frontier for the empire, and a barrier to raiding Caledonian tribes.

Another enthusiastic P4 pupil has been busy at home, looking for where we can still see Roman numerals today. Her clock at home is a terrific example of this.  She has also been busy creating Roman forts and buildings from recycled materials.

Another P4 pupil chose to make a roman fort from recycled materials as part of her home learning. She provided a super explanation of some areas found inside the fort and some common external features.

Remembrance Day Assembly

On Friday at assembly we shared the very important message of remembering and the important symbol of the poppy. P3/4 helped to share this message with all their work they have been doing in class, from the beautiful poppy wreath, powerpoints of key facts and a touching poem they learned.  Thank you for helping us remember!

Primary 3/4 Flight Play

Primary 3/4 have been investigating flight and their knowledge of things that fly. Last week P3/4 pupils spent time playing and exploring with a variety of construction materials and how they could use these materials to make something that flies.

The pupils chose the construction material to use and made their own decisions about the type of flight item they would build. We had a wide variety of flying objects, from an aeroplane to pterodactyl! The children had great, imaginative designs and persevered even when they found things difficult.

P3/4 Fun With Balloons

P3/4 have been investigating flight as part of their learning this term. This week P3/4 had fun experimenting and investigating balloons. The children discussed the types of gas that can be used to inflate balloons and the weight of helium compared to the air around us – the gas takes up space inside the balloon, forcing it to expand. We popped some balloons and untied the ends to let them fly around the room to illustrate air pressure inside a balloon and it escaping.

One pupil then drew a funny face on the surface of a balloon, but forgot to give it some ears. So 2 helpers pressed two plastic cups firmly onto either side of the balloon where the ears should be. We then blew the balloon up again while the helpers held the cups in place. When the balloon was big enough our helpers let go of the cups, which stuck to the balloon by themselves, showing the displacement of the air and the pressure surrounding.

We then continued the balloon fun by investigating static electricity. We tried sticking the balloon to the wall, picking up small pieces of paper and moving our hair.

Sports Committee Assembly

This morning we had an assembly to celebrate all of the great sporting achievements of  2018/19. This year we have had lots of different clubs such as football, futsal, rugby, dancing cycling and invasion games. This year we have had a lot of different clubs but next year we want more. We would to thank all of our partners who have played a big part in helping us achieve our sporting excellence this year.

DYW Skills Fair

Some of our P7’s had an amazing time at the Almondvale Stadium this week investigating careers at West Lothian’s DYW Skills Fair. All pupil enjoyed lots of interactive activities – making bath bombs, slime, ice cream and lemonade, working on their coding skills using the Scratch website, finding out about items of medical equipment, trying out VR headsets, creating and designing our own sweets and sweet shops, as well as many other interesting skills and careers.

Terrific Toronto Teachers

Our Toronto staff have been taking part in a variety of sessions, including online learning, to develop their knowledge and skills in using some of our digital resources.

In our latest session they have been refreshing their knowledge of Education City. This website is an active and engaging resource we use in class to support our pupils’ learning.

Toronto’s Digital Leaders also attended this learning session and are confident in supporting our pupils, and our staff, in the use of this fab resource. What super team work at Toronto!
