Pancake Day in P4

P4 have been celebrating some different events over the last month.

One favourite in particular was Shrove Tuesday. As well as learning about Shrove Tuesday through RME, we were also able to incorporate Pancake Day into our Health, Maths and Literacy activities. We enjoyed investigating our favourite toppings for our pancakes, our favourites being syrup and strawberries. We collected information on favourite toppings, displayed this information in a graph and used the graph to identify most/least popular toppings. We included Pancake day in our Literacy activities through writing shopping lists for making pancakes with our favourite toppings and instructions on how to make pancakes.

Celebrating Languages

Primary 4 are continuing to celebrate Scotland Loves Languages week by researching the range of languages spoken in our school community.

We created a survey, which we carried out in each class, to find out the variety of mother tongues and additional learned languages spoken in our school, and how they were learned.

At the last count today we have 20 languages spoken in our Toronto Family. The additional languages learned have been through a variety of approaches, eg. from parents/carers, other family members, friends, at school, self study, work, online, TV.

We also asked the children and staff which languages they would like to learn at Toronto and were delighted with the wide variety of interest from our peers, some ideas were: French, Mandarin, Polish, Italian, BSL, Gaelic.

We look forward to using this data to help plan experiences and activities to encourage other’s to love learning languages as much as we do.

P4 Loves Languages

P4 have been celebrating the diverse collection of languages spoken in our school community, as part of Scotland Loves Languages week.

We researched how to say “Hello”, “Welcome” and “How are you?” in a variety of different languages and wrote these in our playgrounds to make our families feel welcome to our school as they pick us up and drop us off.

We have been developing our knowledge of the weather and colours in French through lots of games and fun activities. We have also been working on some Spanish with Mrs Boadley.

Outdoor Maths

Happy New Year!

P4 are back and ready to learn. Today we have made the most of our outdoors and have taken our maths out to the sandpit and been practising our subtraction knowledge. We built sandcastles and had fun taking them away to give our answers, using tyres to take away and we worked with bigger numbers and negative numbers by writing sums in the sand.

We loved this different approach to our maths and incorporating the outdoors.

Primary 4 Love Learning

Our IDL theme this term has been the Romans. We have been learning lots of new information about these people in the past and how we know about their lives from examining evidence. We were very excited when we got to handle real life Roman finds which were discovered during a dig in Falkirk, at Mrs Donald’s mum’s house. We had already discovered the Romans had been in that area, through our investigation of the Antonine Wall, and this evidence confirmed what we knew. We loved being archaeologists and trying to piece the finds and evidence together.

In art we have been learning about the use of colour. We have been looking at primary colours, and investigating by mixing to make secondary and tertiary colours. We have loved a bit of messy work and experimenting with colours to develop new colours and shades. We have then used this in our art activities and creating beautiful pieces of art.

P4 Home Learning

Primary 4 have been enjoying working on our homework grids over the last few months. Some children have been creative and made models, others have photographed the changing moon and others have been spreading kindness and Christmas cheer. Many of us have confidently shared our activities and are very proud of our learning.

Here are some examples of what we have done.

PE in P4

This week in P4 we have been focusing on our throwing, catching skills, while working on our dodging and spacial awareness. These skills are coming in useful as we take part in the competitive team game of Benchball.

Also this week we have been learning some new Ceilidh dances in preparation for our Christmas party. We found the turns in the Gay Gordons tricky, and the Military Two Step was too fast to begin with, but after some practice, we are very proud to say we have cracked it! We are looking forward to learning more dances next week!

Learning in P4

Primary 4 are continuing to work hard out of school on their home learning tasks this month.

Wyatt worked hard to create a Fort using recyclable materials. He worked to ensure he included even the little details of the weapons and animals inside.

Mrs Black had a lovely surprise on her desk this week left by a very kind pupil. As well as being a thoughtful gesture, it helped to remember the importance of the poppy and all that it stands for.

Where Does Food Come From?

In P4 we have been learning about food and where it comes from. All food comes from either a plant or an animal. We had fun tasting some foods to decide where they came from and using a Hedonic scale to rate them.

There were some tricky foods, which we couldn’t decide on. We had to work our way back from pasta and bread to dough and flour, to wheat, to confirm that these foods came from plants. Chocolate was one food that almost caught us out – it comes from a plant and an animal – cocoa bean from a plant and the milk from a cow (animal)! Sneaky!
