Challenge Poverty Week – P6/7

For Challenge Poverty Week, P6/7 explored the ‘Cost of the School Day’. We now have an understanding of how the school day costs money for families. We discussed the things Toronto Primary School does to support families in reducing the cost of the school day.

Challenge Poverty Week 2024

During Challenge Poverty Week 2024, Primary 3 explored some big questions:
  • What does West Lothian do to help people in poverty?
  • What does Toronto PS do to help poverty?
  • What could Toronto PS do to help those in need?
Learners discussed the West Lothian food bank, our Toronto Boutique, free school meals and free after school clubs.
Primary 3 also had a visit from Mrs McDougall, our Family link Worker, who came and explained what she does in her job does to help.
For our school to provide further support to our families and community we identified a wide range of ideas, including creating a knitting or sewing club to make scarves and hats to keep families warm, having fruit bowls in classes, and much more!
We then made posters to express our thoughts and ideas.

Celebrating All Things Sports at Toronto!

Mrs Black organised a special ‘Sports Assembly’ last week where we came together as a whole school to celebrate our sporting successes and achievements over the last year. Awards were presented to individuals and we celebrated the sporting successes shared through wider achievements outside school as well as in school. We presented certificates of thanks to a number of our partners who have made it possible to offer some of the sports activities we have done this year!

We also said a sad farewell to our Active Schools Coordinator Mrs Livingston, who is moving on to work with a new cluster of primary schools in West Lothian.

Social Enterprise Academy Awards 2024

On Tuesday this week a group of Primary 5 and Primary 7 children made their way to the Assembly rooms in Edinburgh to attend the Social Enterprise Academy’s Award ceremony, where they collected an award for their work they have done with the Toronto Boutique so far and their plans to develop it further to include a food pantry.

The Assembly rooms were so beautiful, we were in awe of the grandeur. We also got to listen to the Deputy First Minister, Kate Forbes speaking about how we are contributing to changing the future.

P7 Track and Field Championships

This week Primary 7 attended WL track and Field Championships at Craigswood Sports Centre. There were teams of boys and girls competing in long jump, shot put, 80m, 600m and 4x100m relay.

All pupils gave their best and enjoyed taking part and cheering each other on.

Well done to one of our P7’s who was awarded first place in shot put!

Watch Them Grow!

Primary 1 are learning about what plants need to grow.
Last week each of the Primary 1 children planted peas.  They needed a pot, soil and seeds.  Once they had panted the seeds they then watered them.
We are going to look after our seeds and hopefully we will see shoots appearing very soon.
In class we wrote instructions to tell others how to plant a seed.
