Green Fingers in P1A

Everyone in P1A has made a super start to our final term in Primary 1!

We have been outside quite a bit this week, making the most of this lovely weather. We have been getting to grips with some new gardening tools which will be very handy when we start planting in our allotment.

Excellent Experiments in P6/7

P6/7 have been carrying out science experiments this week, looking at changing state of materials.
We did some dissolving experiments and had to predict which materials would dissolve and which wouldn’t.
We learned that some substances dissolve when you mix them with water. When a substance dissolves, it looks like it disappears, but in fact, it has just mixed with the water to make a transparent (see-through) liquid called a solution.
When you mix sugar with water, the sugar dissolves to make a transparent solution. Salt dissolves in water too. We learned that sand doesn’t dissolve.
We also discussed how ice can change to water and steam and how some materials can change back to their original state.

We also looked at the structure of the Earth.  We made models to show the crust, the mantle, outer core and the inner core.  We also learned that we can use an apple or a boiled egg to represent these.

Super Science in P2/3

As part of Science week and our IDL topic the children have been exploring how to make and test predictions about solids dissolving in water.

Experiment one involved the children to predict, investigate and record how solubility is affected by heat and stirring. The children had to predict which method would dissolve the sugar the quickest and why. We looked at this through using cold water, warm water, warm water stirred or cold water stirred. The children all worked in groups and discovered that the warm stirred water was the quickest because when water is heated and stirred, the molecules gain energy and thus, move faster.

To follow this experiment we also did the Skittle Experiment and the children loved learning that warm water dissolves the food colouring on the sweets and makes beautiful rainbow patterns. The children all had good fun and enjoyed being Scientists.

P5 Visit Sky Academy

Primary 5 took an exciting trip to The Sky Academy Studios.

Each of us were given an important role (Director, Producer, Scriptwriter, Reporter, Eyewitness, Camera Operator, Editor) within our studio groups. We all worked very hard as a team, to create a fantastic news report about Fake News and how to prevent it.

It was a great opportunity to work with experts and high-tech equipment. What great fun we had!

P6 Successful Learners

Primary 6 enjoyed watching their introduction to their science topic: Solids, Liquids and Gases. The scientists on YouTube have asked the pupils to investigate a variety of science based questions.
The pupils began creating their own experiments to change the state of a solid. We are excited to see our results when we conduct our experiments next week.

We also participated in West Lothian’s Euro Qui, with some of our pupils representing our class. They did an amazing job competing against other schools in West Lothian.

Imaginative Play in P1A

P1A had a delivery of some creative crates to extend our outdoor play opportunities. Our first problem was how to transport the boxes outside. This was easily solved as the children worked together to carry them outside. The crates and the boxes resulted in lots of imaginative play and fun outside!

P7 Literacy and Developing Their Reading Culture

P7 loved reading the book ‘Billionaire Boy’. We wrote book reports which included paragraphs, opinions, conjunctions, and interesting adjectives.

We also put QR codes on our display, which links anyone who scans it to a video of some of the P7’s discussing their opinions about the book.

P1A Explorers

One of P1A’s learning highlights has been investigating some of the new equipment that has arrived in school!

We used guttering, pipes, our new guttering stands, water and cars to set up an area for the children to experiment with the resources.

The children said they had so much fun seeing how super fast the cars went down the guttering and pipes.  They also said that they enjoyed putting the water down the pipes.

P5 Continuing to Develop Their Reading Culture

Primary 5’s celebrated World Book Day and then continued to develop their reading culture in class by creating their very own ‘Starbooks’ café.

Most of us brought our favourite books in from home to read and some of us borrowed a book from the Starbook’s menu. We enjoyed a sweet treat and a nice drink as we read our books. Miss Roscilli put on café background noises, which made us feel like we were in a real reading café.
