P7b weekly blog update.

Literacy: Week three and the summer holidays are beginning to become a distant memory. We had some time during literacy to reflect on our summer holiday. We had the opportunity to write a recount of our holiday. Before writing our recount, we discussed what important elements were needed, we discussed that our recount will be written in the first person, it will be in the past tense and most importantly we needed to remember to use interesting adjectives to describe our holiday. Mrs. Matos has really enjoyed reading our recounts, and through our feedback, we are going to concentrate on   interesting Openers, Connectives and the use of a variety of punctuation in our  future writing. Using a picture stimulus we got our creative juices flowing. Using the stimulus we wrote a creative story based on the picture which was taken in Brazil. Again it was important to use a range of interesting vocabulary that would keep our readers engaged. We definitely have some very creative writers in P7 and we are looking forward to seeing how everyone’s writing will progress throughout the year.

Numeracy: We have taken some time to focus on our number facts this week. We have recapped a little on place value and reading numbers up to 100 000. We have been practicing our number bonds, and together using all of this knowledge we practiced solving  subtraction and addition problems using the formal written methods. Next week we will be exploring the world of multiplication, please remember to practice your timetables daily, the more we practice the easier it becomes to recall them quickly and accurately.  It is Maths week next week, please remember to log onto Sumdog to take part in the competition.

PE: We have continued this week learning a range of different ball skills that we can use during a game of basketball.

IDL: Using the netbooks and class atlas we located Brazil on a map. We began to look at the geography of Brazil, the neighbouring countries and the cities in Brazil that we will be exploring a little later. To show our understanding, we drew our own map of Brazil, and labeled the map with its cities and neighbouring countries.

1+2: Spanish with Mrs. Matos we have been learning the Spanish Alphabet, we have been singing songs to help us to remember the alphabet better. We have also been learning to spell a range of different names, while our partners spell the names in Spanish.  French with Mrs. Gordon we have been playing a range of different games to continue to practice and use some of the vocabulary that we already know.

HWB: This week we discussed our school values, and what they meant to us. We discussed the importance and why we have values in our school. We created our own values posters, and wrote our own definitions for each value. Keep your eyes open as some posters will be displayed in our classroom.

Numeracy and Mathematics

This week we have been consolidating our learning of addition and subtraction. We understand the importance of using particular written processes and were able to select those which would be most efficient and save us time. When reading word problems, we have been demonstrating our understanding by identifying which operations and approaches we need to use. We were able to articulate our choices with clarity and explain our reasons for doing so. Mr Logan has been pleased to hear the increased use of mathematical and specialised vocabulary in numeracy lessons. We have a greater knowledge of the words and phrases which can also mean add or subtract, for example, find the total or find the difference.  In mental maths, we have been doing 10-a-day to become more confident in our ability to use a range of strategies and discuss these. On Thursday, we carried out some problem solving exercises with Mrs Newton.

Literacy and English

Our Guided Reading timetable began this week and we have all been given some reading to complete as part of our home learning for next Monday. We are studying fictional texts to develop our reading skills, for example, skimming, scanning, predicting, clarifying and summarising. Alongside this, we shall be using Yammer in class to discuss and analyse these texts in greater detail with members of our reading group. Not only should we be able to answer literal questions, but we should also now be developing our ability to respond to inferential questions by reading between the lines and evaluative questions by offering our own opinion.

In grammar, we have been using the thesaurus to find synonyms, or similar words, before putting these into a contextualised sentence. We were asked to apply this skill when producing a creative and imaginative piece of writing on Wednesday. Mr Logan revealed a stormy picture of Rio de Janeiro as a stimulus on the SMARTBoard and we were tasked with writing a story around this image. We ensured that our writing was presented well, that we incorporated detail through description of both setting and character and that our writing was structured to include a suitable opening, turning point and climax or cliffhanger ending.

Our Literacy Corner and library area in class have been re-organised after deciding on the texts we would be most inclined to pick up and read. So far, none of P7a have managed to solve our Literacy Corner riddle or conundrum. Can anyone help them?

Health and Wellbeing

We have been continuing to complete our Daily Mile as we work hard to increase our lap count, and ultimately our fitness levels. It was lovely on Wednesday to complete this alongside some of our Buddies from P1a.

In basketball we responded to both verbal and visual cues with and without the ball before pairing up for some passing and ball exchange work. We are continuing to practise our two step lay-up in order to get ourselves as close as possible to the net before shooting. During small-sided games, Mr Logan has been encouraged by the teamwork and effective communication shown. It is important that we always demonstrate a sense of fair play and sporting integrity.

With Mrs Begarnie on Tuesday, we created our ‘trusted hands’ (below) which detail the 5 key adults that we would speak to or confide in if ever we were sad, worried, anxious or angry. This ties in with our introduction of the 5 Point Scale across school and we will be making reference to these with class as and when needed. On Thursday we continued to work with Mrs Newton to explore the ways in which we can keep ourselves safe in a variety of dangerous situations.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Finally, a huge congratulations to Sahasra for her inspirational piece of writing which was judged to be the winner of Strangely Maigcal’s Fox and Gazelle Top Trumps competition. You can read her winning entry below in which she discusses the beauty of diversity of the power that kindness from those around you can have. She is also pictured collecting her values certificate at Friday’s assembly for confidence. Well done Sahasra, we’re all so proud and you’re a credit to Springfield Primary School!

P4 Class

Hi everyone,

This week we did badminton for P.E. and then we learned to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 and we picked our topic- Philippines.

For literacy were writing a setting for a story.

Written by RP

Focus for each curriculum area are as follows;

  • HWB- being resilient and having a growth mindset.  Children have been learning about the importance of “making mistakes” as part of individual person’s learning journey.
  • Literacy- spelling words with -ass, -u-e and ch.  Children also learnt to peer assess written work and up level their own text.
  • Reading- children have been learning to read between the lines/ making inference.
  • RME- we discussed what  Christianity means as a belief system.
  • ICT-  we used the world wide web as a tool to search for historical people from Linlithgow.
  • Art- Children are currently working on creating a poster for the opening of the new museum here in Linlithgow.  The P4s are going to send their entries for the “Visiting the Museum” poster making competition.
  • Numeracy- we focused on rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, symmetry in shapes as well as identifying the line(s) of symmetry in various shapes.
  • Mental math focus- adding 2 digit  and 1 digit number

Hope you have lovely weekend everyone!

P3B Density and Dreams

This term the children are learning about Literature Circle roles to allow them to take part in discussions about text rather than just reading the words.

This week they were looking at the job of the ‘Summariser.’ This means to tell a shorter version of the story, selecting the main points.  They have summarised Goldilocks and the Three Bears, a passage from the The BFG and The Tale of Peter Rabbit.  The Tale of Peter Rabbit  writing was for Miss Baillie’s corridor display and everyone worked very hard on their summary.  Please stop and have a read when you are in school.

We also made paper flowers for the display.  It was quite tricky but good fun using card to shape the petals and stem.  They look fantastic on the wall.

In numeracy, we have continued our work on place value, continuing to partition and order numbers according to the value of their digits.

On Thursday we began some outer maths, extending our learning on symmetry this week.  We were using a mirror to find lines of symmetry and drawing mirror images.  We will continue to do some outer maths each Thursday.

In our class novel, The BFG, there has been a lot about dream catching and dream jars.  The children particularly liked the part where The BFG put a nightmare into the nose of the Fleshlumpeater and all his wriggling about started a fight with all the other giants!  The children made their own Dream Jars on Thursday as part of a lesson on density and chemical reactions.  It was really good fun and our dream jars looked really cool.  They thought about density – why the oil sank initially and then floated to the top.  They also enjoyed making their dreams fizz with the little bubbles of gas created by the Vitamin C effervescent tablets.

In PE this week we did a bit of yoga.  It wasn’t quite as quiet as a normal yoga class, as the children were excited at holding positions and wobbling about quite a lot!  They worked really hard though and the relaxation session at the end was lovely – great breathing!

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Weekly News from SPS and Bonnytoun…

Today we held a super assembly about diversity. The assembly reminded us all to treat each other with kindness and respect no matter our skin colour, belief, likes or dislikes. We looked around the room and admired our differences. We are all unique and beautiful in our own way. We celebrated the success of Sahasra in P7 who won a recent competition for designing a character who champions diversity. In her winning entry, Sahasra talks about how she used to feel different and worried about being accepted but since coming to Springfield she feels good about herself and knows that she is respected by all. We are so proud of Sahasra for having the courage to speak up about a difficult subject.  We are truly lucky to have the wonderful school that we have, where children are generally very kind to each other, but we must not rest on our laurels. We will continue to teach the message of the value and beauty in difference and we will continue to have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of bullying, racism or discrimination. In our school, we lead with kindness. 💖

Here are some children who won certificates for upholding our school values this week:

We have been busy transforming our infant area once again to represent the world of books. It’s currently a work in progress but we hope that you enjoy seeing part of the transformation at our Meet the Teacher even on Tuesday 11th.

Our nursery children are pleased to report that Victor is now much better and is back with Jack in his home in the nursery. We missed you Victor!

Thank you to our nursery ladies, Mrs Welsh, Mrs Malcolm and our new recruit, Mrs Mitchell who provide excellent ‘end of day’ care for our full-day children until 6pm each evening. Mrs Malcolm has recently been working hard in our outdoor area to make hanging art work with the children.

Here are our pupil achievements for this week:

-Well done to C in P1 for gaining his Enjoy-a-ball trophy!

-Congratulations to A in P4 for making great progress in swimming.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and remember to be kind!

Love,

Miss Baillie xx💖💫

P6A Blog 7th September 2018

Blog

Hello everybody. Hope all is going well. We have been very busy this week in P6A.

In maths we have been doing rounding to the nearest 10,100 and 1000 and multiplying these numbers as well.

In science we have been learning about different types of energy and we are going to watch an electricity video clip to remind us how dangerous electricity is.

In P.E. we did Bochia and netball. In netball the hoops were very high and one team scored 2 goals.

In literacy we rewrote a story called Palmer and the Mermaid. There was a fisherman and he jumped into the sea to keep the Mermaid happy but it was a trap. He got 3 wishes from the Mermaid and he only got to keep the wishes alive if he kept his promise to join her after 9 years.

Recently we have started to do homework which is writing our spelling words 3 times a week and we get tested on them on Fridays, also we do one spelling task a week. Lastly we have 7 school tasks to do at home that need finished before Friday 5th October.

For music we have been recording ourselves playing a song called Everybody Loves Saturday Night. We were playing lots of different  instruments and some people brought in their instruments from home.

Every week we will keep you posted on what we are doing during school hours, have a great weekend, looking forward to Monday .Mrs McAlpine is hoping to see you all at meet the teacher.

Summarising and Symmetry (P3A)

We have had another fantastic week in P3A and we were delighted to find out today that we were the winners of the Peg Challenge once again!

In Numeracy and Mathematics this week, we have been continuing to look at place value. We explored how to put numbers into a place value chart and we used our knowledge of place value to order whole numbers. This week we also started learning about symmetry. We revised what we already knew about symmetry by looking at symmetrical pictures. Then we looked at lines of symmetry and using a mirror to find lines of symmetry. We looked at different shapes and used our mirrors to check whether or not they had lines of symmetry and we then drew the lines of symmetry on a variety of shapes and pictures. We also played some symmetry games on our Promethean board.

On Monday we looked at words with different spelling patterns. We practised our spelling words by completing lots of different active tasks such as rainbow words, spelling flowers, using letter magnets and creating a wordsearch using our spelling words. On Wednesday we revised our spelling words and we beat Miss Harrison at the spelling game ‘Word Workout’.

This week we continued to work on our punctuation. We played ‘Penguins on Ice’ and investigated whether each sentence needed a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark. We looked at when we use exclamation marks and then we corrected sentences by adding capital letters and exclamation marks.

This week we have been learning to summarise. On Monday, we looked at the role of a summariser and we found out that they write a short version of a story and that they only include the main points. In groups, we looked at an extract from Goldilocks and the Three Bears and we found the who, what, where, when and why for the text. Afterwards, Miss Harrison read us a chapter from James and the Giant Peach and we were able to use what we learned about summarising to write a short summary about the chapter.

We also used our summarising skills this week to write a summary about the tale of Peter Rabbit for Miss Baillie’s display in the infant area. We worked really hard with our writing and our presentation. In Art & Design this week, we looked at the visual elements; colour, shape, line and texture. We created Peter Rabbit drawings for Miss Baillie’s display. We looked at the shapes of different flowers and used oil pastels to create a colourful background. Then we used line to create a fur-like texture on our Peter Rabbits and cut them out and glued them onto our background. It created a really nice contrast and we think that our drawings look fantastic on the display!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P4/5 Week Beginning 3rd September 2018

This week we have again won the “peg challenge” for showing that we can quickly line up in a quality line and move around the school quietly. Peg Bear says, “Can we do it three weeks in a row?????”

In writing we were playing VCOP games to increase our knowledge of openers and connectives.  We used “Kung FU “punctuation to help us and also played the “Birdie” sentence coloured ball game.

In ICT we have been using SumDog to help us with our Maths and improve our ICT skills.

In Art we have been looking at the work of the artist Paul Klee and designed colourful footprints which are now on display outside our classroom.

We have also been looking at and learning about the “Incredible 5-Point Scale” and created our own charts to help us calm down if we feel that we need to do this at school.  We have designed our own characters to go with each level of the scale.

Today we selected which Committee we would like to be a member of this year.  The committees are Rights Respecting Schools, Sports Leaders, Health & Wellbeing, Digital Leaders, JRSO, Green Team and Pupil Council.

This week we have been working on our new spelling patterns and received our new reading books.  We are also taking part in the First Minister’s 10,000 book reading challenge.

This morning after our spelling test we took part in the Big Maths challenge to improve our mental maths skills.

In class this week we have been continuing to read our new class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” by Alexander McCall Smith.  Ben and Fee have now arrived at the school and are meeting lots of new people.  We are looking forward to finding out what happens next week.

By Mr Ritchie and all the “Tiggerrific” P4/5s.

Primary 2B

The children are really settling well and working hard. We did some writing of news at the beginning of the week, which I’m using as an assessment. But we have started working in our jotters. They have done their first dictation using their spelling words from this week. The dictation will go at the back of their jotters although some forgot that instruction this week.

We have begun working with our P6 Pals on I.T skills and practised logging on and off this week and played a Maths game when we’d managed this successfully.

The children have enjoyed some Beatrix Potter stories this week and particularly enjoyed the Squirrel Nutkin one. They have used a variety of materials to create their own squirrels which you’ll find on display in the corridor. We are also doing a display of one of our favourite books”Aliens love Underpants”. The children loved designing their own Aliens and Underpants!

In Maths we have continued with our work on numbers after, before, in between and 2 more and 2 less.

Have a lovely weekend.

Love from Mrs.Burton and P2B

Having fun doing French. More photos to follow

P1a Weekly News

P1a have had a very busy week full of learning and fun.

Literacy

In phonics this week we have learnt 2 new sounds “p” and “n”.  We played lots of games with our sounds and made the letters out of flour, sand, newspaper, popcorn and pasta…We also learned how to read a book from left to right, and what words and letters look like. We even learnt that a full stop is there to make us stop and pause when we read. Next week will will get our first reading book home and Mrs Gordon showed us the characters we will meet….Kipper, Biff, Chip and Floppy. We are very excited…

Numeracy

This week our focus was on 3, 4 and 5. These were quite tricky to write, especially the number 5, so we need lots of practice at home too. We sang the lovely “5 little ducks song” and are getting better at counting forwards and backwards. We also did some more work on 2D shape. Have a look at us making a circle, square, rectangle and triangle from people! We also then went outdoors and made those shapes with sticks, stones and leaves that we found in the outdoor classroom.

IDL/Fairyland

Our first topic was launched this week when a sad dragon sent us a letter telling us his castle had been destroyed and no one was believing in fairyland anymore. The dragon needs us to read more fairy tales and help them rebuild fairyland. We have already built a beanstalk for Jack and we will be busy doing more work next week….If anyone has any large bits of cardboard to help us make a castle we would be very grateful.

French

In French this week with Camembear we learnt about “ca va?” how are you. We were able to reply “ca va bien”, “comme ci comme ca” or “ca vas mal”. We also remembered how to count to 5.

HWB

In Health and Well being we worked on another our our school values – respect. We learnt about respecting others and belongings and also respecting ourselves. We also started to learn about the 5 point scale.  Every day we will move our photo on the scale depending on how we are feeling. This lets Mrs Gordon see any children who are upset or worried about anything. We talked about different scenarios like going to the dining hall, coming to school etc and about how everyone is different. For some people those things can make them nervous and for others not, it is ok to be nervous about things and to share those feelings.

Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at meet the teacher on Tuesday.

Mrs Gordon and P1a
