P4/5 Week commencing 1/10/2018

In our Reading Groups we looked closely at our work and identified where we could make improvements in our comprehension skills.  We need to remember to make sure we look back in the book to look for clues if we are not sure what the answer to the question is.

In ICT we have been using SumDog to help us with our Maths.

In Maths we have been working on greater than, less than, equals and not equals with our number calculations.  We were also looking at word problems and using a strategy to solve them.

In RME we have been looking at the Ten Commandments and have also made up some of our own for the class.

We have been working on our French language skills by learning how to greet people and we also learned that the Statue of Liberty was given to the USA by France.

In Science we planted seeds.  We have planted seeds and placed them in different areas. E.g. Outside the classroom, in the dark cupboard, the fridge, window etc. to try out different growing conditions.  We have also set up two “control plants” which we will use to check against the other plants growing conditions.

In Art we have learned about the annual elephant festival that takes place in Jaipur and designed our very own elephants for our classroom display.  We also listened to the story “A pair of twins” about Lakshmi and Sundari who took part in the elephant festival.  Sundari was the very first girl to become a mahout to take part in the parade with her elephant called Lakshmi.

In PE we have been taking part in mini badminton games but we need to work on our service to make sure we get the shuttle in the correct part of the court.

This morning after our spelling test we took part in the Big Maths challenge to improve our mental maths skills.  We can see that our scores are beginning to increase.  To help us we will continue to practice our tables and number bonds at home.

In our class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” Ben has still to find his “sea legs” but he managed to save the ship by steering it past the rocks.

P7b Weekly Update.

‘ There is joy and wonder everywhere, when you see the world through the eyes of a child.’

Numeracy: Numeracy this week has been great fun, we have moved on from the formal written methods of addition, subtraction and multiplication, we are now learning the formal written method to solve division problems. It was tricky at first, but we have the hang of it now! – EM

Literacy: This week in Literacy we learnt about homophones, homophones are words that sound the same but have different spelling and meaning. Some examples are the words guest and guessed, passed and past or herd and heard. We have been learning about inference. This term we have being researching and comparing the differences and similarities of Scotland and Brazil. Mrs. Matos set up a crime scene in which Christ the Redeemer, in Rio, was vandalized. After we had discussed the meaning of inference and how it can be used in the world of life and work, we wrote a short paragraph about the crime, using the evidence to help us to infer what might have happened.- EC

Science: In science this week we learnt about classification keys. We worked in pairs to make a classification key about penguins. In different pairs we started making one about sweets! We made up funny names for the sweets we didn’t know. It was a real treat! – LC

1+2 French: In French this week we revised our numbers to 50, played some lotto bingo and hide the object game. While one person searched for the object, the rest of the class had to count in French, the closer they got the louder we counted, we were surprised our loud counting didn’t crack the windows! – DR-S

Buddy Time: This week with our buddies we had the opportunity to help them with ICT. We helped them to log onto the netbooks and Sumdog. We helped them to become familiar with how to navigate and play the different games. We used our school values of  confidence, kindness and inclusion to help our buddies!

Primary 5 w/e 5th October 2018

This week we have enjoyed a wide variety of lessons.

In maths we have looked at addition and at data handling. We have drawn bar graphs that show facts about astronauts and their trips into space. We also looked at the types of questions that bar graphs can answer and created some questions of our own.

In PE we have continued to develop our skills in hockey, developing passing and shooting.

We have logged lots of books for the First Ministers Reading Challenge. Lets keep this up and see if we can be the class who log the most!!!!

Storywriting this week saw our aliens going on an adventure. Our focus was to ensure the story had a clear beginning, middle and end.

Below are some photographs of homework science projects that we have seen in school over the last couple of weeks. Well done to our creative pupils.

Have a lovely weekend

P3B Estimating, Fact Files and Les Couleurs

P3B have worked very hard this week.  In numeracy we were learning how to estimate on a number line.  We discussed the importance of learning this skill and how it can be used in our everyday lives, for example, when we are measuring or weighing ingredients or using a thermometer.  We estimated individually and also challenged each other to place numbers on large number lines – one from 1 to 100 and one from 0 to 1000.  We also looked at number lines on different measuring and weighing equipment.  We worked hard to explain to others our thoughts as we made our estimations , verbalising the reasoning behind our decisions.  It is good to say our maths thoughts out loud and we learn from each other by doing this.

We have been continuing our research on Australia.  Thank you to D, H and A who brought in some Australian items and photos from home.  We have enjoyed looking at them and learning a bit more about them. I also brought in some Australian story books which we have enjoyed listening to.

During our planning for our Australia topic, quite a few of the questions were about Australian animals.  This week we have been learning a lot more about animals native to Australia and have each begun a ‘Fact File’  We have drawn our animals – looking carefully to make our line drawings as accurate as possible.

We also begun using the internet to search for information.  We have been thinking of good questions and key words to type into the search engine.  We also tried to find child friendly websites that had information that we could read and understand to allow us to take notes.  The Fact Files are really beginning to take shape and we have learned a lot of interesting facts through our research.

We continued to learn colours in French this week.  Last week we begun to say the colours and this week we were also reading and writing them.  We had fun making ‘fortune tellers.’ We wrote the colours on the top in French, spelling the french words out as we played with them.  We also tried an additional challenge to  say as many of the numbers as possible in French and to count in French too.

This is just a taster of our busy week.  I’m looking forward to seeing you all next week at Parents Night – I can’t believe how quickly we are racing towards the October holiday!

Enjoy the weekend.

Blog P6A: WE 5.10.18 Fun week in P6A!

Fun week in P6A!

This week was amazing!

On Monday we had the laptops; we went on Sumdog and worked on decimals. Then after lunch we worked with our P2 pals on adding 10, for example 6+10=16. After that we did walk a mile. Then we read Kid Normal: that is our class novel.

On Tuesday we did symbol work: we were working on adding, subtracting and rounding in word problems. We also did reading and comprehension in our reading groups.

On Wednesday we had a visit from Mr Wells and Mr Logan just to see how we are doing in the class. We all did very well and we could answer any questions that they asked us. We could also answer questions that they asked us all about what our learning intention was.

On Thursday we did P.E and we did netball and we all played a game of it. We also had Science and we talked about electricity and different types of energy. We talked about Health and wellbeing and all of our emotions that we experience and how we show them

Have a good weekend from P6A

Australian Animals and French Friday (P3A)

We have had another fantastic week in P3A and we won Class of the Week again today!

In Numeracy and Mathematics this week we have been learning to count on in fours and fives, estimate numbers on a number line and round numbers to the nearest 10. We completed sequences by counting on in fours and fives and we made a human number line to help us with our rounding. We also played games on Education City to consolidate rounding and estimating and we completed written work in our jotters and workbooks.

In Literacy this week we have been looking at retelling a story in sequence. We listened to the story ‘The Frog Prince’ and we took notes on the setting, characters and structure of the story. We then used our notes to write the story in the correct order. We had to make sure that we included the beginning, middle and end and that we put the events in the correct sequence. This week we have also been continuing to spell words with different letter patterns and we have been practising our common words.

On Friday (we now call this ‘French Friday’) we revised the colours in French. We listened to the Rainbow Song in French, played different games on our Promethean board and used our knowledge of colours in French to complete a paint splat activity. Afterwards we worked with our learning partners to test each other on the French colours.

This week our class were given a very special job! Our house points were relaunched on Friday at the assembly and we have a new House Points display near the hall. Miss Baillie asked us if we could create line drawings for the new House Points display. We looked at photos of Champfleurie, Hopetoun, Ochiltree and Binns and we discussed the lines and shapes that we could see. Miss Harrison then showed us how to create a line drawing by sketching and looking at smaller shapes which go together to make a big picture. We worked so hard on our drawings and we can’t wait to see them up on the new House Points display!

Last week we told Miss Harrison that we would like to learn about Australian animals so this week we started to explore the natural environment of Australia. We watched a video about koalas and then we took a trip to Australia to learn about other Australian animals. Afterwards, we selected which animal we would like to research. We completed our own Animal Fact Files! On Thursday we used a search engine to find information and we looked at using key words to find the facts that we needed. We took notes on our animal’s description, habitat and diet and we noted down any other interesting facts. Next week we will be transferring this information onto our fact files.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

SPS and Bonnytoun News…

This week in school we have been getting ready to launch our new house points system. From now on our house points will be called Springs.

Children will still be in one of the four existing houses which are historic to Springfield. These are: Binns, Ochiltree, Champfleurie and Hopetoun.

Children can earn up to a maximum of 3 Springs at any one time for demonstrating positive behaviour and showcasing our values around school. As a change to our previous system, Springs are small, counter-like objects so that they can be physically totalled by children.

We have made a list of rewards that each house can work towards as they earn Springs. The exciting news is that each house can choose when they would like to spend’ their Springs to buy an award, or whether to ‘save’ them.  We believe that this ‘spend or save’ system will help our children to develop basic financial awareness.

We are looking forward to sharing this news with all children at assembly tomorrow and starting our Springs system in school as of Monday.

We will share news of our winning house and house treats as we have it, in newsletters and on the blog.

Have a happy weekend when it comes,

Miss Baillie xx💖

Yoga, shapes and colours P1a

Literacy

This week we were revising our sounds, can you believe we already know s,a,t,p,i,n,e,h,r and m…..We were playing lots of games where we had to use these sounds to make words like sat, pat, tin etc. We know that when we blend these sounds together they can make words. We also had to try and hear the start sound, middle sound and end sound of the 3 letter words (cvc words).

Numeracy

As we had grasped our numbers to 10 so well we decided to learn about numbers to 20. We did lots of backwards and forwards counting and played fun games like bingo to help recognise these new numbers. Today we even put them in order on a numberline. In shape we introduced 3D shape and talked about the difference between 2D and 3D shape. We were able to sort objects and name them.

IDL/Fairyland

This week we looked at maps and talked about a birds eye view. We each made a map of our playground and our next step will be to make our Fairyland maps now that we know what we want in them. We also had some help from Mrs Philpott to start painting our castle…..we voted for a yellow castle.

French

Today we learned about the French flag, the “Tricolor”, and les couleurs bleu, blanc et rouge. Camembear played a game where we had to pick an item from his box and say the colour.

HWB

We talked about hitting today, and about why we must not use our hands for unkind things. We then drew round our hands and inside drew 3 kind things we could do with our hands.

PE

On Monday we did Hungry Caterpillar yoga with Mrs Gordon. Look at us below, we were pro’s….

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

Postcards and Painting in P2A

Thank you for sending in your postcards, it helped us to identify the different features. On Tuesday we wrote our own postcards from the seaside – we put the stamp, address and name in the correct place and wrote some sentences about our holidays. Miss Baillie visited us during our writing lesson; she was very impressed with our enthusiasm for writing. We have enjoyed posting our free writing in the post box and role playing as the postman/woman!

In Maths we have been counting forwards and backwards in 10s from any number to 100. For example, 38, 48, 58, 68, 78… We found this tricky so we used this number square to help us:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares

In Art we looked at seaside art by the artist Paul Bursnall. We liked how he used thick lines and bright colours – the houses reminded us of Balamory. On Thursday afternoon we had a go at painting our own seaside scenes in the same style.

Next week is our final week before the October break, we’ve worked so hard this term; we definitely deserve our holiday! Next week we will be learning about different types of energy in Science and 2D shape in Maths.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Parents’ Evening (Wednesday/Thursday).

Have a great weekend!

Love P2A and Miss Prince x
