P3A Love Languages…and Time

As it was Scotland Loves Languages week we have had a few language lessons.  P6 Language Ambassadors came into our class on Tuesday and we played some French counting games.  Mrs Gordon set a challenge for every person in the school to choose their favourite word in another language, P3A had a great variation – from Japanese to Irish!  We made a poster showing us all saying our favourite words, we also wrote what language it is and the meaning of the word in English.  On Friday, we had a French lesson on days of the week, we are building up our knowledge to be able to say the date in French each morning.

On Thursday we made clocks to help us as we learn to tell the time.  We painted the quarters first, then added the numbers and hands, finally we wrote how many minutes past the hour each number represents.  Mrs Kennedy showed us some times on a digital clock on the smartboard and we had to make the same time on our analogue clocks.  These clocks have now gone home so we can practise there too.

In other maths we are continuing to subtract – multiples of 10 and near multiples of 10.  Most of us have found a 100 square really helpful for this – let me know if you’d like to have one at home.  When subtracting multiples of 10 we move up the 100 square counting in 10s, for near multiples ending in 9 we subtract the nearest multiple of 10 and then add 1, for near multiples ending in 1, we subtract the 10s and then another 1.

In literacy we are learning some editing skills.  We ‘up-levelled’ sentences on Wednesday.  We were given short sentences with no capital letters or full stops.  We up-levelled them by adding correct punctuation, adjectives and joining words to make them more interesting, e.g. ‘three frogs swam in the pond’ could become ‘Three green frogs swam fast in the cool pond as it was a very hot day.’  Next week we will be correcting sentences with incorrect grammar and spelling.

We had PE outside this week, continuing with football.  We did some dribbling, passing and shooting drills.  It was good to be outside, there a few signs of spring beginning to emerge.

We got some great news at the beginning of the week! M won the Linlithgow Rotary Club design a poster competition.  Her design has now been made into an official poster to be used around Linlithgow – keep n eye out for it!  M also won a book token.  Well Done!

Have a good weekend everyone, P3A and Mrs Kennedy 🙂

Vikings for a Day in P4B

The children have been amazing this week and coped so well with the changes of classrooms, where they line up etc. We are now back in our own classroom with a lovely, new green carpet and woe betide anyone who messes it up!
The highlight of the week was the visit from the Vikings Cathbad and Sigurd on Tuesday. We and P4A had a fantastic day learning about Viking life and looking at many artefacts. We began the day with a story where we learnt all about Viking life and some of us got to dress up as Vikings. Then we split into 4 groups where we got to look at artefacts close up and talk and ask questions about them. We also made a game called ‘Game of Sea Kings’, using clay to make little pieces for the game. We really enjoyed this and we also got to sketch some of the items found at a Viking burial site. We learnt that these can give us information about Viking Status. After lunch we went outside and fortunately the weather was kind, and played a game called ‘Settlers to Sea Kings’. The children were split into groups and learnt how Vikings built their settlements and travelled to other lands. We had to collect what we needed for building our village but also had to protect it at all times from other Viking raiders. It was great fun and we all worked well as teams. The day finished with some of us getting the opportunity to try on chainmail – very heavy, play the lyre, and look at some weapons and shields. We all had an amazing day and talked and then wrote a recount of our day. Hope you learnt lots P4!
We have also been learning about Viking longships and have begun to design our own. Next week we will use our designs to create our own longships.
In Maths we have continued with division and next week we will go onto Money.
We are beginning to plan our assembly and are all very enthusiastic about it. One guess as to what it might be on??
Next week we say goodbye to a member of our class and will have a little party to say farewell.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Love from P4B and Mrs. Burton

P4A Weekly Blog

It has been another busy week in P4a. In Numeracy we have continued our work on multiplication with Mrs Donald and Mrs Doyle. We have been multiplying up to 3 digit numbers by 10 or 100. We are trying hard to remember to think about the digits moving the correct number of steps to the left before we add any zeros to the end of the number. This will help us in  our future learning when we work with decimals.

In Health & Wellbeing we have been continuing to learn about emotions using the Emotion Works cogs. We have already looked at the orange Emotion Words cog to help us extend the range of vocabulary we use to describe feelings and emotions. This week we looked at the red Body Sensations cog and thought about where in the body we might feel different emotions and what these body sensations are. We worked well in small groups to label or illustrate a body template with some body sensations for an emotion e.g. pounding heart when we are scared, butterflies in our tummy when we are worried.

In French we have been learning to name parts of the body. We have enjoyed singing ‘Tête, épaules, genoux et pieds’. We played ‘Jacques a dit’ to practise recognising our new vocabulary.

Tuesday was a very exciting day! Primary 4a and Primary 4b were lucky enough to have two Viking visitors, Cathbad and Sigurd, from Cluaran. They brought lots of interesting Viking artefacts with them and set up their camp in our library. We enjoyed listening to their storytelling about Viking life and heard lots of interesting information which will help us in our learning about the Vikings.

After break we split into groups to rotate around different activities. Cathbad and Sigurd let us have a closer look at the items they had brought and told us more about life as a Viking. We worked in pairs to make clay playing pieces for a board game called the Game of Sea Kings. We then challenged our partner to a game. Mrs Donald was really impressed by how quickly we picked up the rules. With Mrs Burton, we looked at and drew some of the items that were commonly buried with Vikings when they died. We learned that the types of items found at a burial site can give us information about a Viking’s status.

In the afternoon we went outside to learn more about how Vikings built their settlements and travelled to other lands by playing ‘Settlers to Sea Kings’. We worked in teams to collect everything we needed to build our village. We had to remember to protect our village at all times, even when some people were away travelling over land or sea to collect items. Some teams discovered that unprotected villages are easily visited by Viking raiders and they lost some of the resources they had worked hard to gather!

Our day ended with the opportunity to have a closer look at some Viking shields and swords and a musical instrument called a lyre. Some of us even tried on some heavy chainmail armour. What an amazing, action-packed Viking day!!

P3B Week commencing 3rd February 2020

This week we have been celebrating “Scotland Loves Languages” with our P7 Language Ambassadors who came to teach us a French lesson involving our numbers.  We practiced counting forward and backwards up to thirty and then played a variety of games to improve our counting and pronunciation skills.   We then chose our favourite foreign language words and made flags of the countries the words were from to create a nice display for our classroom.  We chose foreign words from Spain, Scotland, South Africa and Italy.

In writing this week we have been looking at how we could make our imaginative writing more interesting for the reader.  We discussed how we could improve our sentences by up-levelling them using “wow” words to describe the different characters or the scene the story was set in.  We came up with some fantastic adjectives and then used these to up-level different sets of sentences.  We also had to remember to check that we had used the correct punctuation when we wrote the sentences.  After the sentences had been up levelled, we then looked at using different linking words to expand the sentence to make it longer and add more detail about what was happening for the reader.

In Maths this week we have been learning more strategies of how to subtract 9, 19, 29 … from a two-digit number by rounding up to the nearest ten and then adding back on.  We have had to think about the place value of the numbers and also to lay our work out very neatly to show our workings.  With Mrs Doran we have been continuing to work on time and have been using the mini clocks to help us work out and display the correct times to solve our problems.

We have also continued to enjoy the new outdoor play area with Mrs Stapleton especially as more items are being added.  We are all looking forward to playing in the “muddy kitchen” area when it opens next week!

In Reading we have been enjoying our new class novel “Flash the Sheep Dog” by Kathleen Findler,  and learning about the adventures of Tom as he settles into his Aunt Jane and Uncle John’s farm in the Scottish Borders.  Tom went to visit the cattle mart in Peebles with his Uncle so to help us understand the story we have been watching some videos about real life cattle marts in Scotland.  We are all amazed at the speed the auctioneer speaks when he is selling the livestock – you have to listen very carefully and not raise your hand in case the auctioneer thinks you have placed a bid. Tom is finding life in the Scottish Borders very different from the one he had in London with his mother.

P5 Weekly Blog

Here’s what P5 have been up to this week…

Literacy and English

We have continued reading our shared texts Holes, exploring the theme of discrimination within the text. We were told of the life and crimes of Kissin’ Kate Barlow, an old western outlaw in the story. After analysing her transformation from well-to-do school teacher to notorious outlaw, we created newspaper articles about her. These had to include a headline with alliteration, sub-heading, picture with caption, columns for our text and a description of who, what, where, why, when and how?

In writing, we have also been creating Burke and Hare comic strips to summarise events between 1827 and 1829 when their crimes were committed. These were to include a number of commonly seen comic strip features including a variety of bubbles, bold and colourful titles, captions that link with illustrations and onomatopoeia. We look forward to finishing these and displaying them on our Literacy wall next week for everyone to see!

Numeracy and Mathematics

In Numeracy and Mathematics this week we have been learning about the difference between volume and capacity. Capacity is how much an object can hold, whereas volume is the amount of space something occupies. We have also been ordering volume, converting between units of measurement, estimating volume and measuring accurately. Next week we are going to be demonstrating our learning when making mocktails! Here we are below attempting to measure accurately with measuring cylinders and containers. Our challenge was to estimate what 100ml, 250ml, 500ml and 750ml of water would be before checking how close we were and calculating the difference.

Learning Across the Curriculum

On Monday we endured a rather wet and windy walk along to Xcite for P5’s swimming assessments. Well done to all of the children for their lack of moans and positive attitude throughout!

Our Science has taken two routes this term. With Mrs Doran, we have continued our studies of bridges and civil engineering. On Wednesday we designed and built our spaghetti bridges which were to include triangles for extra strength. Mr Logan then worked with us to test each group’s effort and see what weight they could hold. Harrison, Jack G and Calan’s bridge managed to endure a weight of 4.5kg without breaking, brilliant effort guys! Is that a Springfield record?!

We’ve also been studying Human Anatomy in Science, taking on the role of Dr Knox as part of our Burke and Hare studies. Firstly we looked at the building blocks of the body, our cells. We compared animal and plant cells and explored the function of different parts of the cell such as the mitochondria, nucleus and cytoplasm. Later in the week, we discovered more about our circulatory system and how the heart pumps blood around our bodies. We found that the blood travels from:

right atrium > right ventricle > artery > lungs (becomes oxygenated) > artery > left atrium > left ventricle > artery > around our body > to the feet (becomes deoxygenated) > veins > back to the heart.

Ask us about this process at home to share our learning with you.

In French, we played different games to consolidate our learning as part of Scotland Loves Languages week. Nairn and Lucy did a brilliant job, leading these activities as part of their Language Ambassador roles!

We have been continuing our futsal sessions with the West Lothian Youth Football Foundation. This week was a ‘game week’ and we took part in small-sided games. It was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate the skills we’ve been developing over the first three weeks, for example, close control, use of both feet, different surfaces of the foot and accurate passing.

P5 and Mr Logan

P3B Week commencing 27th January 2020

In writing this week we have been working on imaginative writing using a story starter.  The story starter was based around a small door that we found in a large oak tree in the middle of the woods.  We listened to a soundtrack of the door opening.  The door was very creaky as it began to open slowly…….   Working with our learning partners we brainstormed lots of different ideas of who might be behind or coming out of the door.  We then used this information to help us structure our story so that it had a beginning, a middle and an ending.  We all came up with lots of interesting characters for our story and we are looking forward to reading and listening to them.

In maths we have been continuing to develop our subtraction strategies and also using our number bonds to help us with our Big Maths challenge.  With Mrs Doran we have been working on using the clock to tell the time using the stations of the clock.

We have also started using the new play area outdoors and had great fun at the start of the week playing in all the snow with Mrs Stapleton and some of our classmates.

In PE we are continuing to learn how to pass and dribble the ball.  We have then been playing mini five-a-side football games to try out our new skills.  Our mini teams are very competitive!

In Health & Well Being we have been using our Circle Time to learn how to improve our listening, teamworking and social skills.  As a group we decided what we needed to work on and then used “Talking Ted” to help us take turns to discuss ideas of how we could improve our skills in the areas selected for discussion.  We then played a communications game where we had to listen to our partner and recreate the picture, they had drawn by listening and following their instructions.  This was a lot of fun and proved to be trickier than we originally thought it would be!

Mr Ritchie and the Tiggerrific P3B’s

Primary 6 – w/e 7th February 2020

This week in Primary 6 we have continued to explore time, looking at time durations, am/pm time and solving problems related to time and reading timetables.

Our writing task this week was to create a diary entry. We chose to be Via or Auggie from the novel Wonder and created a diary entry as if we were one of those characters.

In Science we have begun to look at chemical reactions and we recorded what we observed when a candle burned for one minute. Ask us what we discovered!!

Finally we had some fun with french numbers outside today, playing games that help us to remember these.

Have a lovely weekend

Kind regards

Primary 6 and Mrs Kerr

Skiing, Singing and School Stuff in P7a

On Tuesday we had our second skiing session. The weather was lovely and we all had  great time. Kieran came with us, but we think we are way better than him 😉

On Wednesday we visited Linlithgow Academy, this was interesting as we managed to visit some of the classes we will be attending and meet some other P7’s and new teachers. One of the teachers gave some of her students cake because they had failed their prelims (some of us love cake, but we are not sure that is a reason to fail tests!)

Fame rehearsals are ongoing and we are getting better- the dancers worked really hard with Mrs Gordon and Caitlyn to learn a new dance in just over an hour and everyone agreed it was amazing. The singers have been rehearsing with Mrs Bell and sound fantastic and the actors have been practising their craft with Mrs Newton, Mrs Kerr, Mrs Tulloch and Mrs McVay- watch out Hollywood!

On Thursday we had a visit from PC Dave and PC Matt to talk to us about appropriate use of social media and the internet. We asked a few interesting questions and listened to what they had to say.

Our Language Ambassadors taught us two games in French. One was called Le jeu du beret, we had to wear a miam miam beret and try to be first to put it on. The other game was called vingt-et-un where we had to count to 21 in French. Have a look at our twitter feed to see a video and some pictures.

Fame rehearsals continue next week, tickets will be on sale on Monday and Wednesday from 3.15pm-3.30pm outside the P6 and P7 classrooms. £5 per adult and £2 per child.

We  have our F1 challenge on Tuesday, we have worked really hard on this and are looking forward to racing our cars.

Have a lovely weekend, stay safe as it is supposed to be very, very windy.

P7a and Mrs Newton 🙂

P.S. Please remember we are on holiday next Friday woo hoo 🙂

Toy Adverts and Toys in the Past (P2B)

This week we have been learning to write adverts for toys. We watched a Lego advert and discussed what we liked about it. Afterwards, we looked at different posters advertised toys and explored some of their features such as an interesting title, a detailed picture and eye-catching and bright colours. On Tuesday, we drew pictures of our chosen toys on our posters. We also gave our posters a title. On Wednesday we looked at using persuasive language to persuade people to buy our toys. We used adjectives to describe our toys and statements such as ‘The best toy in the world’. Miss Harrison said that she would buy all of our toys!

This week we have been learning about toys in the past. Miss Harrison showed us some photos of a tape cassette, an Etch a Sketch, a VHS player, a Tamagotchi and a disposable camera. With our learning partner, we discussed what we thought each object was used for. We had some interesting answers! Afterwards, we learned about toys from the past. Using Keynote on our iPads, we sorted photos of toys on a timeline. We also created our own Venn diagrams to record toys from the past, toys from the present and toys from both past and present.

Our sounds this week were ‘a-e’ and ‘tw’. We drew our own ‘a-e’ pictures and wrote the words beside the pictures and we wrote sentences containing our common words and ‘a-e’ words. Some of us made ‘tw’ words on our magnetic boards and wrote a sentence containing ‘tw’ words.

In our Short Read lesson this week, we completed a ‘Picture It’ activity. We listened to a story called ‘Robot Rumpus’ and we answered different types of questions about the story. Afterwards, we read a text about a different robot. Using key information from the text, we drew a picture of the robot.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been learning subtraction facts for 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20.  Some of us were also learning to subtract a two-digit number from a two-digit number. In Number Talks, we are looking at counting on using Rekenreks. We looked at how many beads we could see on the Rekenrek and how we could see them. This week we also revised half past times. We played a game called ‘Stop the Clock’ and matched half past times to analogue clocks.

This week was Scotland Loves Languages week. We learned numbers to 100 in French and on Wednesday morning, Mrs Gordon and two of our Language Ambassadors taught us a game called ‘Poissons pêcheurs’. To revise our numbers, we also played bingo on Thursday afternoon. On Thursday, one of our friends taught us some words in Russian. We learned how to say ‘hello’ and ‘bye’.  This week we also created a poster as a class displaying our favourite words in another language.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Thermometers, Robots and Toys in P2A

This week we have been busy learning about thermometers, toys from the past and drawing robots!

Look below at what we have been doing in our play based learning…

In Literacy we have looked at magic ‘e’ and some of us have been learning the ‘tw’ sound. We drew ‘a-e’ pictures and wrote ‘a-e’ words in our pictures. We enjoyed watching Alphablocks clips with magic ‘e’ in the black hat. Magic ‘e’ does a good job making vowels longer. We wrote lots of ‘a-e’ and ‘tw’ words on the graffiti wall on the interactive board. Some of us even thought of our own ‘a-e’ words and used the big magnetic board to spell these. We really enjoyed watching a Lego advert to help us create our toy posters this week. Our task was to persuade people to buy our favourite toy by creating a poster. We discussed times we have tried to persuade people and talked about how toy companies try to persuade us to buy different toys. They use bright colours and lots of pictures so we had to make sure our posters were like this too. We also had to include the different ways you could play with the toy to persuade people even more. In our Short Read this week we completed a ‘Picture It’ activity. We were given information about a robot which we then had to draw. We did really well highlighting the important information to help us with our robots.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been recalling subtraction facts between 16 and 20. We have been playing a fun game to help us recall these subtraction facts called ‘Hit the Button’. We have looked at different strategies to help us with this such as using our knowledge of doubles. We have also been practising missing number questions. Some of us have been subtracting a 2 digit number from a 2 digit number using partitioning and 100 squares to help us. We have also been practising more half past times this week. We are becoming more confident as a class recognising this on an analogue and digital clock. Some of us were even learning how to recognise when it is quarter past.

In Science with Mrs Bergarnie we looked at thermometers. We discussed where we have seen a thermometer before and what they do. Mrs Bergarnie set up an experiment where we had cups with cold water and cups with warm water. We predicted what would happen to the cups after they had been sitting in the classroom. We used words like degrees Celsius so we could tell exactly what temperature the cups were when we each used our thermometer. We did really well at predicting if the cups of water would be hotter or colder at the end of the lesson and why this happened.

In our Toys topic we looked at toys in the past and what our parents and grandparents might have played with when they were in P2. We loved watching the ‘100 years of toys’ clip. Lots of us spotted toys we had seen or heard of before. We had lots of discussion about this. One of our tasks was to work in pairs to complete a toy timeline on the Keynote app on the iPad. We had lots of fun figuring out where each toy should go.

This week was Scotland loves Languages Week. In class we have done lots of things to celebrate this. We had a visit from the Language Ambassadors and Mrs Gordon on Wednesday. We played a fun game to practise our numbers to 30 in French. Some of us can even say our numbers up to 50 which we have been practising in the line before lunch and using as a countdown. On Thursday we practised the months of the year. We played snakes and ladders in pairs where we had to say the month in French to move on.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

P2A and Miss Muir 🙂
