Snazzy SNSA’S

This week we started our last ever SNSA’s in Springfield (another last). Mrs Newton is super impressed by how hard we have been working. We will finish these next week.

In Numeracy we started looking at sequences, terms, rules and patterns in numbers to 10,000,000. This has caused lots of interesting discussions and debates and we are looking forward to the challenge activity next week.

In literacy we continued to dissect texts to find the mood and atmosphere. It was interesting to listen to everyones opinions and we discovered that sometimes there really are no right or wrong answers!

In Science we finished classifications and looked at food webs and chains. Next week we will be starting the Jaguar F1 challenge- look out for more information on this.

We started to learn our audition song for Fame and the first few songs from the Opera we will be doing.

Next week we have school photos, class, individual and family (another last!). These will be taken on Tuesday or Wednesday.

We are excited that parents are coming in to see our Number Talk activities in class on Wednesday, we will have some stations in class to challenge your learning.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and watched our class assembly last week, we really appreciate all the support you give us 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,

P7a and Mrs Newton 🙂

Primary 6 – w/e 1st November 2019

This week we have started to look at fractions. We have looked at what we can remember and what we need to work on over the next couple of weeks!

In music we have begun to look at the songs for Fame, practising some of them with Ms Bain. We have also listened to the Scottish Opera songs that we will be performing too. The link for them is:  https://www.scottishopera.org.uk/join-in/opera-for-schools/warriors-teaching-resources/

In PE we have continued to develop our badminton skills.

In art this week, we designed our houses for the ‘School House Design Competition’. We’re looking forward to finding out the winners!

The language ambassadors introduced us to a new french game, which involved practising our numbers.

In science we recorded temperatures of water over a period of time to discover which material insulated the water best.

We completed a Halloween maths mystery challenge, working together in pairs to discover the guilty culprit.

Finally, we had our trip to Beecraigs this week, where we explored the key features of a river and measured distances, depth and the speed of the river.

Halloween in P1B!

What a fun week we’ve had in P1b!

In Phonics we learned the sounds f and g.

f – down the stem of the flower and draw the leaves

g – around the girl’s face, down her hair and give her a curl

These are both quite tricky to form – we need to remember to give the f a straight line for the stem or else it looks like a ‘s’ with leaves! For g we need to remember to sit the girl’s face on the line and draw her hair going down below the line.

We also had a go at building CVC words with the sounds we have learned so far. We were super confident with this!

In Numeracy we began learning about addition – adding together two groups to find out how many altogether. We can do this by counting all of the objects. Another strategy we can use is to keep the first number in our head and count on, eg 5 + 3  Keep 5 in your head and count on 3 more, 6 7 8

In Maths we have been learning more about time – Months of the Year. We enjoyed singing the Months of the year song and jumping up on our birthday month. You could try this at home!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5enDRrWyXaw

We really impressed Mrs Bell with our work on ordering the months of the year:

On Thursday afternoon we had a spooktastic time at the Halloween Party. We enjoyed listening to Mr Wells read a spooky story, dancing and playing the toilet roll mummy game!

Take a look at FD’s fantastic writing that she did at home and brought in to show me:

Thank you to Maili for helping us to build our Fairyland Castle:

And well done to AK who is teaching us Polish, this week we learned how to say hello:

Next week we will be reading more hedgehog stories and having a go at making our own hedgehogs out of clay. Any parent helpers available to help with this please let me know 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P1B and Mrs Bell x

Spooktacular Fun in P2A

Halloween had definitely landed in our classroom this week! We had fun creating our potions made out of all sorts of spooky things and pretending to be a witch. There might have been a spider or two as well! We also had our Spooky Event. Miss Muir thought our costumes were fantastic and couldn’t recognise some of us. We danced, listened to a story read by Mr Wells, turned people into mummy’s and had food. It was a busy afternoon! By the end we were feeling a little tired after all the dancing and fun we had.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been finishing our numbers to 100 topic this week and been showing off all our learning to Miss Muir. Last week we counted in 2’s and 10’s as well as estimating and rounding using a number line to help us. We are excited to be starting 2D and 3D shapes over the coming week. We enjoyed the shape ‘feely bag’. We had to close our eyes and pick out a shape and guess what the shape was without looking at it. We were also able to discuss and explain how many sides certain 2D shapes have. We created shape Haunted Houses where we had to find and identify 2D shapes. Some of them looked very spooky. During Number Talks we have been taking part in ‘Esti Mysteries’ in a slightly different way. We don’t have any clues so we have to estimate how many objects there are on our first guess. We then compare our answer to another jar with objects and estimate how many objects are in the other jar. This has helped us to compare and demonstrate our learning of using terms such as ‘more’, ‘less’ and ‘between’.

We read a story called ‘Funnybones’ as a class. It is about a family of skeletons who go out and about wanting to frighten people but end up at the park frightening each other. In our writing we created an imaginative story using the Funnybones characters. We had to think of other places the skeletons could have visited. We came up with so many: the library, flying into space, a yacht an enchanted forest and go karting. Miss Muir was pleased at how hard we worked to include descriptive words and write in one of our sentences ‘dark, dark’ like it did in the story. During free play we also had the chance to create a house out of wooden blocks for the skeleton family. We have been learning new sounds: ‘bl’, ‘cl’,’ng’ and ‘nk’ this week. We were able to write ‘bl’ words on the black blots and write our words in the blue glitter. We had lots of fun with the glitter. The carpet saw a lot of it too!

We hope you have a great weekend! P2A and Miss Muir 🙂

Fantastic Funnybones Stories (P2B)

We have had a busy couple of weeks in P2B!

In Literacy, we have been learning the sounds ‘tr’, ‘bl’ and ‘cl’. We made our own ‘tr’ mind maps, highlighted ‘tr’ words in a postcard, drew and wrote ‘bl’ words and wrote sentences in our jotters and made ‘cl’ words on our magnetic boards. Some of us have also been learning the sounds ‘oa’, ‘ow’, ‘ng’ and ‘nk’.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we finished our learning on numbers to 100. Last week we looked at counting on in twos and identifying odd and even numbers. We also learned to estimate numbers on a number line and to round numbers to the nearest 10. This week we revised all of our learning within numbers to 100 and then we started to learn about 2D shapes. We learned to recognise different 2D shapes and we used our knowledge to complete a Halloween haunted house 2D picture. We also discussed the properties of 2D shapes.

In Number Talks, we have been exploring ‘Number Sense’. Miss Harrison has been showing us an image and we have been estimating how many objects are in the container. After our initial estimates, Miss Harrison has then shared with us another three images of the same container but with a different amount in each. We have been using our number sense to compare the quantities in each container and we have been sharing with our learning partners how we got our estimates.

Last week we concluded our IDL focus on the seashore. We used what we had learned to create our own postcards from the seaside. We created seashore pictures on the front of our postcards and then we used our knowledge of the physical features of the seashore and coastal wildlife to write a message about what we saw at the seaside.

In Literacy this week we have been looking at the story ‘Funnybones’. On Monday afternoon we completed a Short Read lesson. Miss Harrison read us the story and then on the Promethean board there was part of the story but with some words missing! We had to work out what word should go in the empty space and read over the text to make sure that it made sense.

In Writing, we created our own imaginative ‘Funnybones’ stories. We discussed the main events in the story and created our own ideas about other places that big skeleton, little skeleton and dog skeleton could have gone. We thought that they could have gone to a fun fair, soft play, Dobbies, a haunted house, a restaurant or crazy golf! To plan our writing, we drew pictures of the skeletons in their new setting. On Wednesday, we used our plans to write our own imaginative stories. We made sure that we included the main characters, used capital letters and full stops and included three or four interesting sentences describing where our skeletons went. We worked really hard on our writing and Miss Harrison was very impressed with our stories.

This week we have been using chalk, crepe paper, tissue paper and art straws to make Halloween pictures during play. On Thursday afternoon we went to the PTA Spooky Event. Mr Wells read us a spooky story, we played the corners game, we danced to some spooky songs, we played a game called ‘Dress the Mummy’ and we had juice and a snack. We really enjoyed our afternoon and wearing our spooky costumes!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P2B and Miss Harrison xxx

P4A Blog Week Ending 25.10.19

Hope you had a lovely holiday!

Literacy and English

In literacy we have started a book study on Aesop’s Fables. These are short stories that have a moral or a meaning. They often involve animals, such as The Hare and the Tortoise, or The Grasshopper and the Ant. This term, discussion writing will be one of our focus genres. These stories will help us to discuss what the meaning is and what we think about what happened in the fables.

In punctuation and grammar we were learning how to use speech marks. We learned that speech marks should go round all the words said including any punctuation.

For spelling this week, we were learning to spell words that we had tried to use in our writing, which we had copied onto a card to practice.

We had some ERIC time (Everyone Reading in Class) to enjoy reading of our choice.

Numeracy and Mathematics

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been focusing on addition and subtraction, using number talks and various addition games. We have also been practising mental maths.

Learning across the Curriculum

In P.E. we started learning Short Tennis. We found it similar to badminton but easier with a ball than a shuttlecock. We impressed ourselves at how quickly our skills progressed as we practised counting how many times we could bounce the ball off our rackets, against the wall and to each other. Some of us are aiming to beat Andy Murray! We will be learning the rules of tennis, how to improve our skills, learning to be competitive, work well with others and give positive feedback. We already knew some technical language of tennis e.g. ‘volley’.

In health and wellbeing we have started to learn about simple nutritional needs at different stages of life. We discussed which foods were healthy and which were unhealthy and what foods were needed for various ages. We sorted food into different food groups and studied a food plate to see what proportion of each food group we should be eating.

P4A and Ms McAlpine

P1a’s autumn extravaganza

We were very excited to return to school this week and bring with us signs of autumn that we had found. We put them all in a tuff tray so that we could play with them. P made a magnificent sculpture with her dad, we made this our centrepiece. We also went our gathering leaves and looking for signs of autumn so that we can make some art next week. This term our IDL/book focus (alongside our continuing Fairyland focus) will be hedgehogs. We will be exploring hibernation and stories about hedgehogs, we will also attempt to make some hedgehogs…

In literacy we learnt 2 new sounds d and o. We are finding d quite tricky to write, but we do find it funny to remember the rhyme for writing it… round the dinosaur’s bottom up his tall neck and down to his toes. We are going to keep practising lots.

In maths this week we focused on more and less, then one more and one less. The language of mathematics can be tricky and some people were finding it difficult to remember which was more and which was less. Again lots of practise at home please eg what is 1 more than 6, what is 1 less than 9 etc. We also looked at a new topic – time. Our focus was on knowing the days of the week, being able to order and recognise them. Most of us were managing this very well and we love to sing our days of the week song each day, ask us to sing it to you!

In French we learnt please and thank you. S’il te plait and merci. Everyone managed to ask Camembear for an object and thank him politely.

In IDL we learnt about the components of a castle ready to make our own one in the classroom next week. We then drew our designs and had great fun drawing dungeons, turrets, portcullis and moats…we especially loved talking about the baddies as you can see from our comments here…

Don’t forget to have a look at our learners journey online as Mrs Gordon has uploaded photos and comments to show our progress, of which we are very proud!

Bon weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

P7b

This week we started our Spanish lessons.  We learnt to say simple greetings and questions.

For French, Mrs Gordon and our class consolidated all the learning we have done last term.  We created pictures which reflect colour and number of animals.  We had to read a whole phrase in French and draw what it meant.

For Numeracy, we have been strengthening our skills in number talks.  We identified number pattern and sequence. We revised on all our 4 maths operations and discussed/ worked on  several word problems involving all operations.

For literacy, we explored the use of subjunctives.  We began our short read activities which we will be doing 4 times each week. We further extended our comprehension skills as we answered literal and inferential questions from  the poem entitled ” The Song of Hiawatha”.

For Health and Well-being, we learnt about gender bias.  We created a short skit and presented to the class what gender bias may look like in everyday life.

Next week, we be focusing on story writing just in time for Halloween 🙂

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Week ending 25.10.19 Primary 5/6

Art

For art, we made a tree and coloured it in autumn colours. We drew a tree outline with branches in black pen and then used oil pastel in warm autumn colours. They  are beautiful.

Maths

For maths this week we did multipcation in word problems and also for mental maths. We practiced are 3,4,6,7,8 and 9 times table. We have been playing multiplication wars to help with our recall.

Spanish

For spanish we watched High Five Spanish and practiced conversation.

Assembly

Our asswmbly is going to be on Purple for Polio, through our Rotakids committee. Dont want to give too much away.

We wrote our scripts and we got in groups and made our slides. Also, we made  posters for the classes and to advertise that we are going to  dress in  purple and bring in £1 for polio eradication.

We worked really hard in music and Ms Bain loved our tunes we wrote.

Primary 5 are working in groups for their social enterprise and have some fabulous ideas. More to follow.
