This has been a busy week in P4a. We have been learning about daily life in Ancient Egypt. We learnt that they had many things the same as us. They had beds, but their pillows were hard neck supports made of wood. They had toilets- however they were nothing like ours! Their toilets were stools with bowls underneath filled with sand- think cat litter box 🙂 They had ovens- fired with wood, fridges- well holes in the ground, but they kept food cold and they also baked bread every day.
Once we had learned all of this we looked at pictures to work out what jobs people were doing, we know that we cannot be 100% sure we are correct as no one from Ancient Egypt is still alive, but by looking at the clues in the pictures we can be pretty sure we know what they were doing.
We created a time line of important events from the past, did you know that Ancient Egyptian civilisation started in 7500BCE- that’s a really, really long time ago.
Finally we wrote a diary entry for an Ancient Egyptian child- Mrs Malcolm visited us during this session and we know she liked our writing. Mrs Newton says it was the best we have done all year!
In numeracy we have been finding missing numbers using inverse operations- that means using the opposite method from the one in the sum. We found this tricky but fun.
In music Mrs Bain recorded our Katie Beardie song- once Mrs Newton gets this she will try and share it on dojo.
We also had snow- well it snowed but then vanished before we could get outside.
Have a great weekend,
P4a
We enjoyed a visit from Wallace Fencing Club this morning, where the pupils had a taster session for the sport.
They had a fabulous time – can you identify yourselves???
It was lovely to see all the children back this week, after what sounds like a busy and fun long weekend.
Although it was only a short week, we managed to get plenty of learning done.
On Wednesday we were excited to show of our bridges that we had built at home. This was a follow up activity from our visit to the Forth Road Education centre. Mrs Matos was so pleased and proud of all the hard work and thought that was put into building our bridges. We used all the knowledge we had learnt from our visit, to build our bridges. Primary 3 came along to look at our master piece, we spent time talking to Primary 3 , explaining why we chose the design and materials that we did. Primary 3 were so impressed with our work, that word spread around the school, that Primary 2 wanted to come have a look and even Miss Baillie.
In Literacy this week we were learning about the comma, and how important that the comma is used correctly in our writing. To help us remember when to use a comma, we worked with a partner and created a ‘Rules about Commas’ poster. Our poster displayed the 6 comma rules and for each rule we had to write our own sentence using the comma rule correctly. Mrs Matos has displayed some of the poster on the classroom wall, so that we can refer back to the rules, when using commas in our writing.
We have been continuing to learn different strategies in subtraction. Last week we had learnt the counting on strategy/shopkeepers method, using a number line. But this week we learnt the counting on strategy without using a number. We also learnt one other strategy and that is called the negative way. We are enjoying learning all these different strategies, and we will be able to use the one that we feel is best for us.
We’ve been learning a lot about Scotland and about the people who have made a difference in Scotland, one person we have been researching about is Mary Queen of Scots. Mrs Matos his clues around the classroom, we needed to find the clues and use our note taking skills, to write down as much information as we could. We used the information that we had found on the clues to create a time line of events for Mary Queen of Scots. Did you know? Mary Queen of Scots was married THREE times!
What more could we possibly learn this week?
I am delighted to show the hard work of some of our P6 boys. These boys brought their writing down to show me and were very proud of their efforts! Well done boys and keep up the hard work!

A massive well done to Lewis, Michael, Aidan and Catriona for coming Second (by three points) in this year’s Linlithgow Rotary, Inter-Schools Quiz! I accompanied the children along to Linlithgow-Bridge Primary for the event yesterday and was bursting with pride at their accomplishement, effort and good manners. What Clever Clogs they are! Well done also to Torphichen Primary who took First prize-the first ever Quiz win for the school. Great effort! Go team Springfield!!!!

We have begun to think about Fairtrade across School in the run up to Fairtrade Fortnight. Primary 3 launched this year’s focus through their excellent assembly yesterday , when children learned about the journey of a cocoa bean and how Fairtrade chocolate is produced. We understand the importance of giving farmers a fair price for their produce to ensure that we live in a world where we treat others as equals and with respect. Keep your eyes peeled for some more Fairtrade Activities happening in School and around our community over the next few weeks…. Well done to Primary 3 and Mrs Leadbetter!
We started our World War II topic this month, and the children are all very engaged. Quite a few knew some facts about the war from their conflict topic last year. The children are keen to find out more about weapons, evacuees, concentration camps, rationing, key battles and much more over the next month. We created a washing line of the key events of WWII in chronological order and completed amazing pencil portraits of the leaders of the Axis and Allies.
In French we have focused on food. We could use what we already knew from likes/dislikes to create role plays in cafe’s and ice cream shops using je voudrais, c’est combien etc
In maths our focus for the last few weeks has been fractions. We have been simplifying, exchanging to equivalent fractions, fraction problems, conversion to decimals and much more.
Don’t forget to bring in your “Reflections” photos on Monday for the Rotary competition. The very last day they can be accepted is Tuesday 21st February. Each child can enter a maximum of 2 photos and they must be a minimum size of 6″x4″ and a maximum size of A4.
Bon weekend
Mrs Gordon and P7a
It’s been a very short, but busy week this week. We have all been preparing and rehearsing for our class assembly about FairTrade. We had lots of fun showing our assembly to the school and to our families too, even though we were a bit nervous beforehand!
We want to say a big thank you to everybody who was able to come along today , as well to everybody who helped us all with our costumes and our lines. Here are a couple of pictures from today’s assembly!
We hope you have a lovely weekend.
From P3 🙂
