P7a’s weekly news

This week we started our Christmas Fayre Enterprise project. The children put themselves into groups of 5 across both P7 classes and started work on their products. Each team is tasked with creating a product/products or services to sell at the Christmas Fayre on December 8th. We learnt about lots of key areas including product planning/design, resource planning, marketing, budgeting, pricing and production. We now understand the difference between a net and gross profit, and talked a little about supply and demand too. We are very lucky that one of the P7 parents Mr Fryer is going to come and talk to us about budgeting next week.

In literacy we continued with our Poppy Factory Recount pieces, and in the “Big Write” on Tuesday learnt about Tanka poetry. Tanka poetry is 5 lines long and has a 5,7,5,7,7 syllable make up. These poems are often about nature and feelings and so were perfect to allow us to write about the Amazon rainforest. We were inspired by some rainforest sounds in the background. The children created some very creative, emotional and heart-felt poetry.

In art we have been very busy finishing our junk models of Brazilian monuments. They should be ready next week, watch this space… We also created our own poppies for our very own “Flanders Fields”, have a look below. These were fantastic, each child created their own design of poppy using materials of their choice. It was great to see so many of them choosing to sew their poppy.

On Wednesday we took part in the P7 Sportshall Athletics cluster competition. The children performed excellently in the track and field events and it was lovely to meet all the P7’s from the different cluster schools.

P7b Achievements

I am delighted to share two P7b sporting achievements today. Firstly, Danielle recently competed in an ice skating competition at Murrayfield Ice Rink and managed to come in 3rd place winning bronze. Well done Danielle, what a fantastic achievement. Keep practising and I’m sure there will be some silvers and golds on the way!

Secondly, a huge well done to Sam who last night was selected to be ball boy at Andy Murray’s Live Event at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow. Sam was positioned at the net during Murray’s match versus Roger Federer and was lucky enough to get both of their autographs at the end. You’ll also see from the picture below that Sam is wearing Federer’s headband that he wore for the match. If you want to watch the highlights from this and see him in action, you can find them here:

Numeracy

Last week in Numeracy and Mathematics we came to a conclusion with our work using decimal numbers. Whilst establishing the link to both fractions and percentages, we have been adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimal numbers through the use of written methods. We understand that ahead of our transition to S1 it is of great importance to show our working and verbalise the strategies we are using when completing written calculations or developing our mental arithmetic. Even if we don’t find the correct answer, we will gain credit for the steps we have taken in getting there. As it was Halloween on Tuesday, our problem solving this week was titled ‘Murder at the Movies’. We had to apply our knowledge of decimals in order to cross off names from the suspects list before eventually finding the culprit. Next week we will be further developing our knowledge of decimal numbers as we move on to look at money. This will be good practise ahead of our Christmas Fayre enterprise work where we will need to use money to purchase resources, work to a budget and hopefully calculate eventual gross and net profits.

Literacy

In spelling we are continuing to challenge ourselves with tricky spelling rules and patterns. Mr. Logan has been thoroughly impressed with the scores in our spelling test each Friday and the ability to demonstrate our understanding of these words’ definitions in our ambitious, up-leveled sentences. On Thursday we used mind maps as a tool for planning our Poppy Factory visit recount writing. This allowed us to note down key points and phrases that would aid the flow and structure of our work. These pieces of writing will be continued next week where we also have our Big Write event to look forward to. In this time we will be writing some rainforest tanka poems. Our guided reading timetables have been altered as we move onto new group novels, and we ended this week by entering discussion groups on Yammer. This online space within Glow was used to answer a range comprehension type questions posed by Mr. Logan and discuss our novels in greater detail with our peers.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E, we have been practising ahead of our Linlithgow cluster Sportshall Athletics festival next Wednesday. The events we have been working on are speed bounce, chest push, standing long jump, vertical jump, javelin and relay races. If we are successful at the cluster event, we will move forward to West Lothian finals and Mr. Logan believes we have every chance of doing so judging by the level of performance he has seen. The Sports Committee had their second meeting of the session on Friday and pupils worked hard to design a new logo that will be displayed on any Sports Committee work around school. We will be voting for our winning design at our next meeting in December. Finally, Sam had some fantastic news to share this week as he has been selected to ball boy in Andy Murray’s Live Event next Tuesday. Murray will be facing Roger Federer amongst other matches at the SSE Hydro and you can tune in on Eurosport from 7pm for a chance to see Sam in action!

P7a Cafe’s and Flowers

P7a finished their decimal focus this week by making anchor charts with key information about working with decimals. They then moved on to use their knowledge of addition, multiplication and subtraction of decimals in the maths café. Each child could pick their challenge level “mild, spicy or hot” and had to answer questions from that menu. The next stage was to create their own maths café. They could create a menu for a restaurant/café of their choice and then a partner had to visit their restaurant with their “family” and order. The waiter then had to add up the bill (without a calculator) and provide imaginary change. Some children will finish off this activity early next week. Although fun to create the menu and pretend to order lots of food, the children were using key transferable skills for learning, life and work.

In literacy this week we were very lucky to visit Linlithgow Primary on Monday for a theatre performance of “up to speed”. The performance touched upon feelings, being different and changes ; all relevant topics for the children.

In Guided Reading groups the children worked together to ask and answer questions using Blooms Buttons and Blooms Flowers. These tools help promote higher order thinking and questioning skills by challenging the children to think in depth about what they are reading.

P7a Poppy Factory visit

P7a had a fantastic trip to the Poppy Factory this week. It was great to learn lots about World War 2. Mrs Gordon, Beth and Aidan got to dress up as well !

We learnt about the history of the poppy, and then had a tour around the factory where we saw how the poppies and wreaths were made. A lot of us were surprised that the majority of the process is done by hand, by volunteers who are all ex-servicemen.

We then got the chance to make some poppies. Have a look at our photos below.

Happy weekend from P7a and Mrs Gordon

Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory (P7b)

Today P7b visited Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory in Edinburgh in the lead up to Remembrance Day. We were warmly welcomed along by Stewart and the rest of the veterans and began the visit with a talk from Pete. He told us in great detail about Britain during World War II, showed us many interesting artifacts and even had some of us out to try on the outfits! Thankfully Mr. Logan escaped the spy outfit as a female was required and Mrs. Couper kindly agreed to step in. And, just when we were needing woken up, the gas rattle and air raid sirens were set off. Maybe we need to have one in class?

After Pete had finished, we began our group tours of the factory and got to see some of the many veterans hard at work. All of these men and women have a disability as a result of their service in the armed forces but still manage to manufacture an incredible 5.3 million poppies every year. The money raised from these wreathes and poppies provides much needed support for the many war veterans in Scotland and their families. Once our tours came to and end, we were lucky enough to be able to sit down and make some poppies for ourselves. Mr. Logan was incredibly impressed with the speed at which we were putting these together and it is lovely to think that these will be some of the poppies worn across Scotland this time next year.

What a fantastic visit, with some poignant moments that reminded us of the great sacrifices that men and women have made during times of war to allow us to live in the way we do today. Please have a look at our photos from the day below.

Skills for Learning, Life and Work

Last session we successfully launched our Skills for Learning, Life and Work Programme in P7 and welcomed over 25 working professionals into class to deliver talks and presentations. Over the remainder of this academic session, both P7 classes will be developing their enterprising, pre-vocational, personal and employability skills in a practical context. An important aspect of this, is to make the link between the classroom and the workplace in order for the children to see the value of their learning and how they can contribute to their school, community and wider economy.

We would like to invite any parents or carers who would be willing to deliver a short talk about their occupation or line of work. It would be hugely beneficial for the P7 pupils to learn about a diverse range of careers and roles. We hope to build their knowledge and understanding of the workplace, and give them an insight into what employers may expect of them and what they should expect from employment. Our work this year will culminate in the organisation of a P7 Careers Fayre and a ‘Take Your Child to Work Day’.

If anyone is willing to give up some of their time, or any of last year’s volunteers would be willing to visit us again, could you please email me (ewan.logan@westlothian.org.uk) with a note of interest and your line of work. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

School Football News

There will be no school football training tomorrow (Monday 23rd) due to it being the last day of October break. We will however be recommencing next week (Monday 30th) for both P6 and P7. We will remain outdoors from 3.15 – 4.15pm until the darker nights draw in during which time we will have use of the school hall. At this point P6 and P7 pupils will attend training on separate weeks due to the space available.

I’ve been delighted with the numbers of pupils attending each week (averaging 45 at the moment) and they have all been working hard to develop their football skills, applying these in small-sided game situations. So far we have focused on dribbling, close-control, passing and shooting with our focus between October and December moving to possession, attacking/defending in 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, 3v2 scenarios and shape.

In order to give the children attending something to work towards, I am in the process of trying to arrange some friendly fixtures. Details to follow over the coming weeks. Springfield will have one P6 team entering the Junior Soccer Sevens local qualifiers with one P7 team entering the Soccer Sevens qualifiers. Local qualifying fixtures will be announced in due course before seeing if we can progress to the area and national finals.

We are also pleased to announce that our Linlithgow cluster schools football league will be up and running again after Christmas. This is great news after a long period without any sort of league format. There will be cluster meet ups at Linlithgow Leisure Centre on one Monday afternoon in January, February, March and April. On each afternoon we will play games in a round robin format and all results will be counted towards league standings. The league winner will be announced at the end of April before we head into the annual George Allan and Roundtable tournaments.

If pupils wish to be involved in these events, they must show dedication through their continued attendance at training and demonstrate a positive attitude at all times.
