Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

This week started with a special visit for P4-7 from the Deacons Court of Linlithgow and an introduction to our new Provost. We were happy to meet our Provost and on behalf of our school, we wish him all the very best for his first Marches Day next month. Some of our children and Mr Wells even got to dress up as Baillies!

We also talked about the Decorated Bicycle competition on Marches Day  which two of our lovely pupils won last year. We’d love it if lots of our pupils could enter this year with the help of some talented Mums and Dads! 😉

Our assembly today was an important one led by the NSPCC. All children were reminded of how to keep safe and how to speak up and use their voices if something in their lives isn’t right. We also reminded ourselves of the Childline number in case we needed to speak to a safe grown up about a problem. The NSPCC will be back in school next eeek to run workshops for our P6-7 classes to follow-up on the issues mentioned in assembly. It is our job at Springfield to safeguard all children and protect children’s rights.

We have had a number of pupil achievements this week. Here are our latest successes:

-To I, E and A congratulations for taking part in the Sunny Stars show! I especially loved E playing the part of Princess Jasmine as I’d quite like to be her myself! I loved the costume too! 😊

-C in P2 ran a a fun run recently and deserves a ‘well done’ for doing very well.

– A in P5 has completed the recent Race for Life with her Mum and we are proud of her.

-F in P3 has been very busy gaining some more Girls Brigade badges. Super work F!

-E in P5 got a brilliant silver medal in a recent gymnastics competition. Well done E!

-H in P5 continues to do brilliantly in rugby. You superstar H!

Finally a very ‘Happy Birthday’ to three of our infant children including M and one of our gorgeous sets of twins!

Good luck to our school football team and our Springles cheerleaders who will perform at the George Allan match on Sunday. You will do us proud, of that we are sure!

Have a lovely weekend in the sunshine!

Love,

Miss Baillie xx💖🌞

Swim, Cycle, Run

What fantastic weather we got for today’s triathlon event at Deans Community High School in Livingston. Two buses full of our 68 budding triathletes made their way over to participate, and needless to say they didn’t let us down with their levels of determination and enthusiasm throughout!

First up was a lap of the swimming pool before a quick towel down and transition to the bike…

Followed by two laps of the cycle course in the sunshine…

And finally, there was one lap of the running circuit to complete before crossing the finish line…

After all of that, it was time for some water, bananas and a well-earned rest. Well done to all of our boys and girls who took part today, you did us proud!

Golf Galore

Over 35 of our P7 pupils enjoyed their second session of golf at Kingsfield Golf Range today, provided by the Stephen Gallacher Foundation. The boys and girls who attended were working on their chipping this week, using wedges and lofted clubs. We started off with a game of ‘Rory Says’, which followed the same rules as ‘Simon Says’, to get warmed-up before splitting off into teams of 3 for a competition. Each player had to hit towards a small square target 15 yards away, with the aim being to land the ball inside this zone. If we were successful, we had to place one of the golf balls behind us on the noughts and crosses board to earn points for our team. It was great fun, and a huge thanks again to Jane and Stewart our coaches for all their hard work in planning and delivering these sessions!

Football News

It was a successful weekend for SF and P7b and NP in P7a, as they both competed in the local derby match between a Linlithgow schools select and Bo’ness schools select. Linlithgow came out victorious and you can see the boys pictured below with the trophy. SF and NP are just two of our talented footballers we have at Springfield Primary School, who’ll also be representing us in the George Allan tournament this Sunday 20th May at Prestonfield. Kick off is at 9.00am if any of our pupils, parents, carers and families would like to come along and cheer the boys and girls on!

Well done you two! A great achievement and one you should both be extremely proud of!

Our Short Week at SPS and Bonnytoun

Our short week has flown by in school and nursery. We ended the week with a ‘teacher swap’ in school which was organised by our Pupil Council. Pupils enjoyed working with a different teacher for part of the morning and fun was had by all.

Here are some achievements from this week…

Well done to F in P3 for further success in football. Did you know that F also plays for Heart’s boys team?

A number of children in school received skiing certificates this week for taking part in after-school skiing at Polmont Ski School.  Congratulations to you all!

Well done to N in P2 for taking part in a charity run.

E in P2 made a super model of an aeroplane which she brought along to show me today. Great effort E!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Weekly News P7a

Well what a busy few weeks !

Lion King – I couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of the children for the hard work they put into the Lion King. We had a great photo session last Monday in full costume and make up. Our dress rehearsals came with a few problems, but by showtime everything went very smoothly. We have had fantastic feedback from parents, carers, friends and staff; you should all be very proud. The children had a great party last Friday to celebrate.

Literacy – We started a Lion King mind map last week and then started to write the recount this week. The aim is to reflect on the process from start to finish and write about what we enjoyed and what we would do differently. I’m looking forward to reading each individual opinion.

We finished watching Wonder last week, and I managed to not cry…we had a great discussion afterwards about what was different in the book and the film and why. This week the children started writing a comparative essay.

Numeracy – Our focus moved to multiplication this week and use of the formal algorithm (or written method). All children worked really hard and were able to move onto long multiplication where they multiplied 2,3 or 4 digits by 2 digits.

WWII – We had 2 guests this week to tell us all about the War at Sea. My Auntie Linda Darroch talked to the children on Tuesday about the First Air Raid of WWII which took place in the Firth of Forth. The target of the attack was the HMS Hood which was in Rosyth Dockyards for a refit, however it was the HMS Southampton which was hit and the ship that my Grandfather (now 100) who was a Royal Marine was on. Linda told us all about Primary and Secondary sources of information and the story of this historic event. Then on Thursday Sandy Boiling came in to talk about the story behind the sinking of the HMS Hood and the Bismarck. The children were fascinated with this presentation, and Sandy brought with him copies newspapers from the day to show how the media portrayed such events. We were very lucky to have such interesting speakers.

Spanish – In Spanish this week we learned about “La comida” food. We did some role play exercises of ordering food in a restaurant and had to use our knowledge of French and English to help us match up Spanish and English food items.

PE – We have lots of opportunities for sport this term. We started tag rugby last week, which is going very well apart from all the injuries…On Tuesday some of the children took part in Golf sessions at Kingsfield, which they loved. SD was the P7a star golfer! Well done S. Mr Logan also continued his athletics work and was pleased with the progress the children are making.

Happy long weekend from Mrs Gordon.

Springfield’s Careers Fayre

Tonight we hosted Springfield Primary School’s first Careers Fayre for our P5, P6 and P7 pupils together with their parents, carers and families as part of our Skills for Learning, Life and Work programme. We had a huge turnout, with the children able to visit the stalls of 20 local professionals, businesses, colleges and universities. They asked questions, gained an insight into a wide variety of career opportunities and were even lucky enough to get some free goodies for their efforts! A huge thank you to those of you who were in attendance and made this such a great success, and also to those who kindly agreed to run a stall on the evening. Without all of your support we could not have provided the children with such a valuable learning experience. Have a look at the pictures below to see what was going on!

FORE!

Today 36 of our P7 pupils attended the first of four golf sessions with the Stephen Gallagher Foundation at Kingsfield Golf Range. The coaches Stewart and Jane introduced them to iron shots using the GASP strategy for approaching the ball before hitting it; Grip, Aim, Stance and Posture. The children ensured their left hand was at the top of the club with their thumb pointing down. They then placed their right hand over the left to cover their left thumb. As they stood over the ball, their toes and tummy pointed where they wanted the ball to go and they ensured their feet were shoulder width apart. Finally, they bent their knees slightly and ensured their bottom was sticking out slightly!

The children were given time to practise their swing by aiming towards a net before taking part in a competition to finish the lesson. Points were given for accuracy, height and length. We’re very excited for next week when we will be driving the ball! Look at the photos of us in action below…

News from this week…

Our week has been taken up showcasing our learning in Expressive Arts. From our Lion King performances to the little P2/3 children who sang and danced their way through a superb assembly, our pupils continue to amaze us with their talents.

Miss Prince and her P2/3 class held their wonderful assembly yesterday which taught us all about how to save our oceans and seas from plastic contamination. We are going to be working with  volunteers from the Linlithgow Transition project in the following weeks to try to use less plastic and packaging in our food products in school. Let’s all think about out plastic usage and how this impacts on our environment!

We have now purchased two new teddy bears, Peg and Peggy who will be awarded to classes who collect the most pegs each week. We hand out pegs for walking quietly in the corridors around school. Our nursery children have been busy working hard to keep the nursery floor tidy and have been earning ‘pegs’ as a result. They were delighted to be the first group of children to receive Peggy this week as were P7B who received Peg. This is a great incentive for positive behaviour and is motivating our children to continue to be responsible.

Pictured below are the ‘birthday’ children in our infant department this week,  plus Peggy the teddy, who R in P1A is proudly holding. Well done to P1A for winning Peggy this week!

Keep an eye out for our monthly nursery and school newsletters which will be coming out in the next week or so. This is such a busy term for us with lots of exciting things happening. We are now in full swing with our enhanced transition programme as well as our P7-S1 transition and nursery-P1 transition.

Look out for our P6-7 Career’s Fayre which we are holding next week (1st May) for our upper school children. This is a new initiative for us and builds on our skills for learning, life and work programme that we established last session.

As always, we welcome your feedback and you can do this by dropping into school, emailing our mail box or giving Mr Wells and I a call.

Take care everyone and have a lovely weekend!
