P5 Weekly Blog

Can’t believe our short week is over already! Still lots of learning to share with you, here’s what we’ve been up to…

Literacy and English

We are continuing to read The Nowhere Emporium and are nearing the conclusion of the story! We’ve started using some Reflective Reading approaches in class and used task mats this week to develop our reading skills whilst further exploring our class novel. We’ve been analysing the relationship between Lucien Silver and Vindictus Sharpe, and ways in which the author uses characterisation to intrigue the the reader.

During grammar this week, we’ve been skimming and scanning dictionaries to find definitions of unfamiliar words from the text and using them correctly in context. Ask us to tell you what ‘morose’ and ‘barter’ mean…

Finally, in writing we have been extending our knowledge of varied types of poetry. Through studying the key features of a cinquain poem, we were able to discuss the structure, layout, syllable count and content more confidently. We found they have 5 lines and a syllable pattern of 2, 4, 6, 8, 2. After choosing a theme for line 1 we used adjectives in line 2, verbs in line 3, feelings in line 4 and a single word to conclude in line 5. We discovered that once completed, cinquains form a diamond shape. You can read some of these on our Literacy wall! They’re fantastic!

Numeracy and Mathematics

Our Number Talks this week have been pictorial and involved making estimations and reasoned guesses. Our problems have required us to show resilience through ‘trial and error’ and ‘process of elimination’ approaches. As time progressed in each Number Talk, we were given additional clues that allowed us to narrow our scope.

Our learning of addition has continued this week as we demonstrate our ability to use written methods and evidence strategies used that enable us to find the final answer. We have discussed the importance of lining columns up correctly, carrying out basic counting within 20 accurately and showing all units of measurement where appropriate. Next week we will be using the inverse operation, subtraction.

Nobody has managed to work out the rule and next 3 numbers in our sequence this week. Answers on a postcard:

3, 4, 7, 16, 43…

Learning Across the Curriculum

Science – We have been studying energy with Mr Villanova. What different types of energy can you tell us about? Where might you see this energy in action? What is the importance of ‘renewable energy’?

Art and Design – Mr Villanova has also been creating and decorating the nets of 3D shapes with us.

P.E – In basketball we have been applying our skills developed so far this term during a small-sides games week. Next week we change our focus to shooting with accuracy.

P5 Weekly Blog

I can’t believe we’ve reached the September weekend already! Time flies in P5, here’s what we’ve been up to this week and a look ahead to next…

Numeracy and Mathematics

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been applying our learning of place value when using written methods of addition. Firstly, we ensured that our 3-digit numbers’ columns were lined up correctly and that we had noted which operation was being used with an addition sign (+). We reminded ourselves that when we have 10 or more in one column we have to ‘bridge’, ‘carry’ or ‘regroup’ by passing our tens to the left. When reading questions, we realised that a lot of mathematical words and phrases for addition mean the same thing; both, altogether, how many, find the total, plus, combine, increase, find the sum of and join. Next week, we will be furthering our knowledge of written methods when we look at the inverse operation of addition, subtraction.

We’ve also been doing some Number Talks this week to improve our mental agility. Mr Logan has been calling us the ‘Mathletes’ and asking us to verbalise varied strategies used to tackle addition problems. For example,  when posed with ’20 x 25′ we were able to find the solution in a number of ways. We decided that the most efficient method was to multiply 25 by 10 then double our answer.

Literacy and English

Whether it’s an ocean quest with Magnus Fin, seeing the world through August’s perspective or studying Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth, we’ve been getting excited about reading this week in P5!

Mr Logan has been springing reading time on us with the use of some acronyms and images, e.g. ROBOTS – read one book off the shelf, BEAR – be excited about reading. We’ve enjoyed dropping everything and having some quiet time to immerse ourselves in a text  that we really enjoy. It doesn’t matter what this is, it could be an atlas, a newspaper, a fictional story or comic! Whatever the text is, it’s important that we want to read it and get excited before turning each page. We’ll be studying a range of texts this year and looking to develop our reading skills and strategies to better understand them.

In writing this week, we’ve been finding out about Japanese poems called haikus. Haikus are usually written about an aspect of nature, e.g. the seasons or a particular animal, and express different feelings and emotions associated with these themes. The structure of a haiku is important; there must be 3 lines and a total of 17 syllables. The first line should have 5 syllables, the second 7 syllables and the third 5 syllables. There is no need to use rhyming but some of us chose to try this with the final word of the first and third lines. We’ve been word processing these and adding some relevant images. You’ll be able to see them on our Literacy wall, come and have a read!

Learning Across the Curriculum

Our focus in P.E this week has been control and maintaining possession of the basketball. We worked on the height at which we bounce the ball and using our body position to shield the ball from opponents. After some skill practises we tried to apply our learning in small-sided games.

We’ve been researching Japanese landmarks this week and taking clear and concise notes on these using bullet points. We’ve travelled from Mount Fuji to Kinkaka-Ji and on to Nara Park and Hiroshima Peace Park. In groups, we began creating informative posters which we will present to the rest of the class next week.

Mr Logan met with Claire Fraser from the Social Enterprise Academy this week about a project that P5 will be starting in October. Stay tuned for more information on what P5 will be doing to raise money for a worthy cause in the local community!

Numeracy and Mathematics

In Numeracy and Mathematics this week we have consolidating our learning of place value. This involved being able to explain the link between a digit, its place and its value. We reminded ourselves that a digit is a single numerical symbol whereas a number is a series of digits. When applying our learning, we were asked to find the ‘value’ of a particular digit within a number, e.g. what is the value of 7 in 37,560, to which we would (hopefully) say 7,000.

In mental maths this week we have been doing some Number Talks. This is when we are posed with a calculation and have to play with the number to increase our ‘number sense’, i.e. visualising problems, performing varied calculations quickly and being more flexible in our mathematical strategy. We were asked how many ways we could solve 357 + 444 before verbalising and demonstrating our strategies to the rest of the class. This will be a included in our Numeracy and Mathematics everyday throughout the year as a 10/15 minute warm-up. We’re hoping to become better ‘mathletes’ by the end of P5!

Literacy and English

In reading this week, we have been assigned our group novels for the term and used ‘prediction’ and ‘prior knowledge’ within group discussions. We discussed what would happen in the story and how the plot may unfold, and shared our prior knowledge of themes explored on the cover and within the blurb.

We also worked on some Japan reading comprehension after accessing an informative text about the country. We were posed with a range of literal and inferential questions and had to ensure we used the wording of the question to form our answers and full sentences at all times. The final set of questions were evaluative where we offered our own opinion and viewpoint.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Basketball continues to be our focus within P.E and we have been working on both our dribbling and passing skills during our two sessions this week. Whilst dribbling, we focused on:

  1. Using one hand at a time to avoid ‘double dribbling’
  2. Pushing the ball rather than slapping it
  3. Using both our right and left hand
  4. Making effective use of space and being aware of those around us
  5. Not bouncing the ball too high to prevent interceptions

We also used a range of passing types; chest, bounce and overhead, discussing scenarios when these would be most effective.

Our knowledge of Japan has been built upon this week as were introduced to key information about the country before using our notes to create fact files. We used headings, sub-headings and an appropriate layout to display this information is a clear way. Next week, we’ll be digging further into life in Japan and how this differs from life here in Scotland.

Achievements

  • A huge well done to Finlay M who shared his Canal Fun Day successes with us! He showed resilience when telling us of how his boat sank after 1 minute but it didn’t spoil the fun!
  • Lily was lucky enough to meet the Scotland Rugby team after their squad was announced for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan, and brought in her signed flag to show us. What a lucky girl!
  • Mairi D, Jude and Cori took part in a Clarion cycling event on Wednesday and managed to complete the hill climb! Great effort guys, maybe there’s still time to make Team GB’s Tokyo 2020 squad…

P5 Weekly Blog

We’ve had another busy week as the children settle into P5. Here’s what we’ve been up to and what we are looking forward to next week…

Health and Wellbeing

We continued working on our movement skills and spatial awareness in P.E this week. The size of ball increased as the session went on. We began by following hand-clap patterns and sequences with a tennis ball to improve our hand-eye coordination before introducing the basketballs and working with a partner. We tested our reflexes against different opponents before mirroring their movements and varying the ways in which we exchange the ball.

This week, we were also lucky enough to have a surprise visit from the SSPCA. We were spoken to about the importance of being kind towards animals and heard stories about some unusual call-outs made by staff. The session finished with a coding exercise where we were tasked with building a programmable owl which flapped its wings and moved its head. Unfortunately we weren’t able to make Oscar fly…

Technologies

In the upper school this term we have a particular focus on building and construction, mimicking that going on around the school currently as our toilets are upgraded. We’ve got real-life materials, Spheros, K’nex and Lego workstations to choose from. On Wednesday afternoon we tried some K’nex challenge cards in small groups and created our own unique designs. We had strands of DNA, noughts and crosses, cars and even a wheelbarrow!

Literacy and English

The genre for writing this week was creative and imaginative. Mr Logan introduced our word bank and recapped on the important features of a story before showing us an image of Japan. Our stories had to use this setting but the characters and plot were left to us. The standard of writing was incredibly high and Mr Logan was impressed with the ambitious range of VCOP in our work.

Problem Solving

We’ve been taking part in varied problem solving and team building exercises over the first couple of weeks to improve our teamwork and communication skills. Our final challenge of the week was the classic ‘Egg Drop Challenge’. All 8 groups were given a minimal amount of resources including tape, newspaper, string and a plastic cup to create a protective capsule for their egg. Out of 8 groups, 4 managed to keep their egg intact after it was thrown into the air in the back playground on Friday. You’ll see their proud wee faces below, well done everyone!

Achievements

Finally, a couple of achievements from this week to mention…

  • O and S have been attending gymnastics sessions in Linlithgow and received a number of medals for their efforts! Well done girls, Mr Logan is really proud of you both!
  • E has been demonstrating her creativity at home, constructing Mt. Fuji and a Japanese building using Lego. Super job, E!

Coming Up

  • 2.9.19 – Japan IDL learning context begins
  • 4.9.19 – Swimming assessment at Xcite Lgow, leave 12.15 and return 15.15
  • 13.9.19 – ‘Responsible’ assembly
  • 16.9.19 & 17.9.19 – Holidays
  • 18.9.19 – Liaise with Leadership from 16.00-17.00

Welcome to Primary 5/6

Hello from primary 5/6.  Lego people  will welcome you into our classroom.

We chose  mining to display our class charter which we discussed in groups. Next week we will be making our class charter .

In groups, we discussed our feelings for the 5 point scale and are happy with the results.

This week we had a visit from SSPCA. They came to talk to us about wildlife in Britain and caring for them. We played a game about Scottish wildlife and then we did some coding. We made an owl from coding blocks and then we programmed it to move and make sounds. It was good fun . We got a sticker and a pencil at the end.

Photos from our SSPCS visit

For maths and art we drew geostars and then we got to choose whether we wanted to paint them in different shades or tones, or we could choose hot or cold colours and make patterns in the shapes. They look fab.

For numeracy this term we are learning about place value and  we did

M   Hth Tth Th    H T U.  We also did some number talks.

This Week…

Well, we’re already nearing the end of the first week of the 2019/2020 session! It’s been a pleasure getting to know our shiny, new P5s. They’ve been full of bubble and enthusiasm, and shown a willingness to learn which bodes well for the coming months. Mr Logan is looking forward to what is sure to be an exciting year.

This week, we’ve been getting to know each other, settling into new routines and beginning to setup the classroom together. We’ve been participating in lots of paired tasks and group work to show Mr Logan how effectively we can communicate and work as a team. On Thursday we enjoyed attempting a ‘Tower Challenge’ with marshmallows and spaghetti to see who could build the highest, freestanding structure. We could only used the 9 marshmallows (would have been 10 each had Mr Logan not eaten some) and 20 strands of spaghetti provided. Eva, Howie, Sofia and Emily D came out as winners!

Finally, a mention to L and M who brought in their latest gymnastics achievements to share with us today. Both girls attend gymnastics sessions locally and continue add medals of various colours to their collection! Great effort you two, Mr Logan is super proud of you.

L and M sharing their latest gymnastics successes!

Primary 5 – w/e 14th June 2019

This week we have finished making our guitars in Science. They were reasonably successful and some of them played three different pitches.

On Tuesday we went to the book festival at the Rugby Club and learned about how Lari Don found inspiration for her books and stories.

We had a visit from the Linlithgow Dyers and we have been creating pictures for a competition launched by them.

We had a guided tour of Linlithgow Palace, where some ‘time travellers’ showed us around and explained the history of the palace and some of its famous residents. We also went to the new museum and explored some of the artefacts and history there.

We’ve had Sports Day and our school disco this week as well.

As part of our literacy work we are creating non-fiction books on a subject of our choice.

Have a great weekend

Primary 5 – w/e 17th May 2019

We’ve had a busy week, with our visitors popping in and out and talking to us about our learning.

Some of our highlights this week include:

In maths, we have explored area, how to calculate it and created a robot with specific dimensions.

In storywriting we planned and wrote an introduction to a story. We included lots of description and were trying really hard to include connectives too.

In Science we explored buoyancy, creating our own boats from tinfoil and seeing how much cargo (marbles!!) they could carry. Ava and Aleisha’s boat carried 154marbles before it sank.

Our topic focus this week has been mapping and we created our own maps of the school and its grounds.

We explored kosher and non-kosher foods in RME, looking at how Jewish people separate these foods.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Primary 5 and Mrs Kerr
