We have begun to think about Fairtrade across School in the run up to Fairtrade Fortnight. Primary 3 launched this year’s focus through their excellent assembly yesterday , when children learned about the journey of a cocoa bean and how Fairtrade chocolate is produced. We understand the importance of giving farmers a fair price for their produce to ensure that we live in a world where we treat others as equals and with respect. Keep your eyes peeled for some more Fairtrade Activities happening in School and around our community over the next few weeks…. Well done to Primary 3 and Mrs Leadbetter!
It’s been a very short, but busy week this week. We have all been preparing and rehearsing for our class assembly about FairTrade. We had lots of fun showing our assembly to the school and to our families too, even though we were a bit nervous beforehand!
We want to say a big thank you to everybody who was able to come along today , as well to everybody who helped us all with our costumes and our lines. Here are a couple of pictures from today’s assembly!
We hope you have a lovely weekend.
From P3 🙂
Can you spot the crocodile? A very interesting addition to any class!
We arrived at New Lanark and found out that the bell in the tower rang at 5am to make sure everyone was up and ready for work at 6am!
We had a look at the Washroom.
The children went into a Victorian room.
We found out what a gazunder was and what you did with it.
Then we visited a room from the 1960’s and looked at the similarities and differences.
There were some interesting suggestions for the carpet beater.
It was interesting to see what was on sale in the shop.
We were transported back in time to the Victorian School Room. The boys had smocks and the girls had dresses with ribbons. We had to sit in rows with the boys on one side and the girls on the other.
We practised our handwriting on slate, using a slate pencil.
We had to identify and point to countries in Europe, with a long pole, on a huge map.
We really enjoyed our trip!
This week in P3 we began looking at FairTrade. We have been keeping an eye out for items with the FairTrade logo on them and have been bringing these into school to help us with our assembly. We carried out some research to find out where FairTrade products come from, and put these on a map of the world.
On Wednesday we were very lucky to have Google Expeditions in our school. In the afternoon we went on our very own adventure to explore the 7 wonders of the world…. we saw the Taj Mahal, The Great Wall of China, Petra, Mexico (Chitzen – Itza), Rome and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil!! We also went under the sea and all the way out to space…. what an exciting adventure!!!
On Thursday we went on a bus to New Lanark with P2 and P2/3. It was a really long journey but when we got there we had lots of fun. We went to see the mill workers house and shop, and saw how people used to live 200 hundred years ago. After that we went to the classroom in Robert Owen’s school. As soon as we got in the classroom we were all given a school uniform to wear which was red and white, this was really fun! We had a teacher who was really strict and we learnt what it would have been like to go to school 200 hundred years ago. Finally we all got the opportunity to go on the Annie McLeod ride, it was a little bit scary but we still had fun!
We are really looking forward to practising for our assembly next week and wish you all a lovely weekend.
From P3 🙂
In literacy this week we have been continuing with our diary writing. We had lots of fun pretending to be Harry Potter and thinking about all the things which he might do in a day. The magic was continued when we wrote our ideas in our diary entries!!!
In maths, we have been learning our 3 times table. We have had lots of fun playing different games to practice our recall of the 3 times table , and even got the stopwatches out to see how quickly we could answer questions from our friends.
For our Topic we have been looking at David Dale and Robert Owen. We did a bit a research to find out some facts about them and the history of New Lanark. We also looked at some of the inventions in the mills, which helped to improve the production of cotton such as the spinning jenny and water frame. We had lots of fun when we all got the opportunity to be inventors for the afternoon, we designed some really cool inventions…. even a machine which does your homework for you!
We are really excited for our trip next week, and have lots of questions which we would like to ask when we go.
We wish you all a happy weekend.
From P3 🙂 x
This week in P3 we have enjoyed learning our times tables in maths. We loved watching a fun video about the five times table and used the handy trick to help us with our learning. We also enjoyed doing some trickier word problems which involved us thinking backwards and using our division skills. With Mrs Begarnie we were also looking at lines of symmetry and trying to identify these in different objects and letters.
This week we had our first lesson of music with our lovely new music teacher ‘Mrs Bain’. We had lots of fun playing games which involved singing and clapping… and we even made up our own song about Springfield Primary School!
In literacy we began looking at diary writing and the different things which we would include in a diary entry. We talked about what we did during the week and wrote our very own diary entry, sharing our thoughts and feelings.
Finally we also found out what our next topic is…. ‘David Dale & Robert Owen (New Lanark) which will be developed further by exploring how things have changed over the years since the Victorian period. We were very excited to hear about our new topic and our school trip to New Lanark!!!
We all hope you have a lovely weekend.
From P3 (Class of the Week again!!!!!) 🙂
Happy new year everybody!
We have been extremely busy since coming back after our Christmas holiday.
In literacy this week we were looking at the sound ‘ve’. Here are some photographs of us practising spelling words with ‘ve’ in them.
On Wednesday we had a visit from the RSPB which was great fun. We explored our outdoor classroom for trails and other clues to where wildlife might be hiding, and then we actually found some wildlife too! We found so many different insects and creatures that we even made up a song to remind us of what we saw!
On Friday we also had a visit for the National Youth Choir of Scotland and got to practise some of our singing! We had lots of fun exploring different tunes and rhythms and even got to play a few musical games too.
We hope you have a lovely weekend 🙂
