Class of the Week for P1A!

What a busy week we have had in P1A!

On Monday, we had gym. We were practising different movement skills such as jumping, throwing, catching, skipping and balancing. Look how smart we look in our gym kits!

Our sounds this week were ‘r’ and ‘m’. We have been learning to read, say and write our sounds. Some of us got covered in flour when Miss Harrison let us write ‘m’ in the flour trays! Next week our sounds will be ‘d’ and ‘e’.

In numeracy, we have been learning about tally marks and pictograms. We played a game on Education City and then we made our own pictograms. Some of the buddies came to see us on Wednesday and we played games using tally marks.

This week, we have been looking at the fairytale, ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We listened very carefully to the story and we were able to answer questions about it. On Wednesday, we made fantastic puppets. We worked well in our groups and made sure that everyone had a part to play. On Thursday, we retold the story using our puppets and put on a spectacular puppet show! Miss Harrison was very proud of us!

We had an exciting end to our week when we won Class of the Week! The trophy is in our classroom and we get to keep it until next Friday. Well done, P1A!

Paddington Bear makes a visit

On Monday, P2/1 had a special visit from Paddington Bear. He came to visit Springfield and teach the children some French. The children learnt some classroom instructions in French and have been practising them this week.

In Maths this week Primary 1 have continued with their number formation. They have learnt all of the numbers to 10 now so had fun practising them in many different ways. Primary 2 have been adding two sets together and have looked at number bonds to 10.

In PE this week, the children enjoyed a game of helicopters and aeroplanes which helped them look for space. They have been working hard on their throwing and catching skills, making sure they are keeping their eyes on the ball. Some of the children challenged themselves further by adding movement and creating a short sequence.

The children have also finished creating their castle for our classroom. The Princess lost her home when the Enchanted Forest was destroyed so the children have been working very hard to create a new, magical home for her. They have learnt some of the key features of a castle and were able to design their own both on paper and by using Lego.

Bears and Porridge – P1B

This week we have had a very busy week.  We have been reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We made porridge on Monday – it was a big hit, 17 children said they enjoyed it and only 3 weren’t very impressed! Mrs Kennedy was really pleased that everyone helped to follow the recipe and tasted it. We have also been learning about where oats come from and Mrs Begarnie has been teaching us about what happens to our food in our bodies once we’ve eaten it.

Our home corner is the Three Bears Cottage at the moment we have been acting out the story as well adding to it and making up our own versions – lots of very active imaginations!  We worked in groups to retell the story by drawing the pictures and trying to write some of the words.  We worked very well in our groups, showing good teamwork  and we all concentrated well and worked hard.  Mrs Kennedy has put our story mats up on the wall outside the classroom, people visiting for parents night can have a look at them.

We have been learning the sounds p and n and the words in, an and and. We are getting very good at spotting the sounds and words in the books we read and around the classroom 🙂

We had PE with Mrs Reid this week.  She brought a huge bag of balloons with her and we practised throwing and catching – it was great timing as it was Cohens birthday and playing with the balloons was a perfect way to celebrate!

We finished the week with our Harvest assembly.  We were very active, singing lots of great songs with actions.  Some girls and boys from P6 came to help us with the actions, they were very good at it and helped us a lot.  We also read our reading books to our buddies on Friday and they read us a story too. We love buddy time.

Thanks for reading our very first blog.  We’ll write more soon.

P1A’s Fairyland Castle!

P1A have been learning all about Fairytales and are helping the friendly dragon to rebuild Fairyland. We used lots of paint and sponges to make bricks for our castle and we got a little messy! Today we added some flags and windows. We think that the dragon will love our castle!

Digital Learning Week – May 2016

digital

It’s National Digital Learning Week and Springfield Primary are taking part in this very successfully!

This work has been happening all year and we were really excited to engage with schools in Falkirk to share good practice. Following a visit from children and teachers at St. Bernadette’s and Victoria Primary School, our children also wanted to be digital leaders. After submitting application forms for the post of digital leader, two children from each class were appointed and this news was celebrated in assembly.

This week, our digital leaders (with the help of Mrs McMahon and Mrs McCartney) are delivering a digital leader lesson to their peers. This is really exciting and going very well so far. We look forward to more digital leader work in the future!

Parent Helpers at Springfield/ Bonnytoun Nursery

parent helpers

At Springfield Primary School and Bonnytoun Nursery we welcome parent helpers at all times and value the contributions you make to our school. As a way of thanks, we would like to invite you to a thank you coffee morning on Friday 10th June at 9.30 am in our school hall.

Thank you to our parent focus group who met last week to look at ‘Family Learning Programmes’. At this meeting, some parents have offered to draw up a useful help sheet for any parents/ carers who are helping in our school. We aim to hold a meeting in school early in the new term to explain the role of a parent helper and procedures etc. We are asking that all parent helpers complete a P.V.G. form (these can be obtained from the school office).

Our school is expanding to 14 classrooms and we are having a little move around. Currently the parent helper room is being used for several purposes and we are looking into this. Please bear with us whilst we are making these changes, moving is always tricky!

We would like to thank all parents, carers, friends and family for your support and help this year  in school. We really do value you and very much look forward to welcoming new parent helpers in the new session too.

thanks

People who Help Us – P1A

jobs p1

This week Primary 1 looked at how people help us in everyday life, as part of our Linlithgow focus. We started with a speaking and listening activity to get the children to think about all the different people who help us. We looked at all the people that do help us, like the police and fire fighters. We had to think about what the people who help us look like. We worked in pairs to think about how we could help each other. We played a Circle Time activity that got us thinking about what each person does as part of their job, using prompt cards. Primary 1 started to think about they wanted to do when they grew up to help people. They thought about which job they wanted to do and we wrote these ideas and reasons on a writing frame. We set up part of our classroom with role play masks. Role play is a great way to get into character. We were very lucky that we had a visit from a librarian at Linlithgow Library, Harrrison’s daddy, who is a fire fighter and Sienna’s daddy who is a policeman. We thoroughly enjoyed our visitors and Primary 1 showed fantastic manners and respect to our guests! We asked challenging questions and learned lots! Ask your child what they would like to be when they grow up!
