P1a’s Transport Design Challenge

This week we pulled together all our transport learning to create an end of topic design challenge. We talked about transport methods from the past the present and the future. We then picked our own groups for the transport challenge…

We had to plan, design and then make a model of a futuristic mode of transport. The final goal was to present our models and ideas to the class.

Collaboration, cooperation and compromise were key skills in our group task. We all had to be involved and we all had to agree on one model. We then drew our plan/design, coloured it and labelled key features.

The next stage was making the models. We had to cut and paint the parts, then glue them together. Some designs were trickier than others (especially the hot air balloon!).

The final stage was presenting to the class. Mrs Gordon could not believe how confidently we spoke about our models, and the way we answered any questions. Here are the final models.

Happy holidays from Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a weekly news

Literacy

We have had a digraph revision week where we went back over all the digraphs we have learnt…we are finding it really tricky when they are all mixed up. Next week we are going to keep revising. One reading group were very confident individuals when they shared their reading book with the class for milk and story time. The children loved having their classmates read to them.

Our guest readers

Numeracy

This week we started to move our focus to numbers to 20 whilst still using addition and subtraction methods to help us. We talked a lot about number before and number after and also number inbetween.  Most of us can say the numbers to 20, but lots of us can’t recognise them or write them yet. We will do lots of practice… twelve is a tricky one with many people writing 21 instead of 12. In money we did an end of topic assessment. Most of us are able to recognise the coins, add them together, work out change and do simple word problems.

IDL-transport

This week we learnt about flying. We started learning about the Montgolfier brothers and hot air balloons, we then made our own hot air balloons using bits of material. Then we learnt about airplanes and the history of the first flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. The children really enjoyed learning about these first planes and were fascinated that they had no roofs or passengers…Next week we are going to design a futuristic mode of transport…

HWB

In PE we did some basic ball skills and team games with Mrs Gordon. The focus was on following instructions and keeping the ball under control. With Mrs Reid we had another week of gymnastics with the apparatus which we are loving.

We learnt about internet safety this week and talked about what to do if we see something online that worries us. We discussed who our trusted adults were and that we must tell them if anything corries or upsets us.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Spring has sprung in P1a

We have been learning all about signs of spring this week in P1a. We went on a spring hunt in our grounds and managed to find everything on our checklist apart from a lamb…. (some people did say they saw a lamb!). We have also been watering our bulbs and they are growing each week. We can’t wait to see what colour the hyacinths will be when they come out…

When we came back to school we wrote about what we had seen. We all worked really hard to include an adjective or describing word to make our sentences more interesting. You will see our lovely writing on the walls outside our class at parents night.

Numeracy

We have been revising our subtraction from 6 and 7 this week, trying lots of different combinations and strategies. We also had to work out different ways to make amounts eg 8p, we found this really tricky as we knew that 4+4=8 so wanted to draw 2 x 4p, but then we realised there was no 4p coin…We really had to use our school value of resilience and keep trying and trying until we could find an answer…

Literacy

Our new digraphs this week were ‘oo’ and ‘ew’ as in look and blew. They both make an ooh sound. We realised that ‘oo’ is mainly in the middle of words and ‘ew’ at the end. Our new common words were ‘of’ and ‘her’.

HWB

This week we did some baking since Mrs Gordon had some very ripe bananas. We learnt about food hygiene and keeping ourselves safe in the kitchen. We made 2 Banana Loaves and then we got to eat them! We all tried it and most of us had seconds…we love baking!

Art

This week we had a guest art teacher…Tallulah’s mum! We made art to go with the story “We’re going on a bear hunt”. We made the swishy swashy grass, some snowflakes, the river and some bears! It was such fun! They are for our “Going on a Bear Hunt” display. Thank you Mrs Lang!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a’s weekly journey

Numeracy

In subtraction we continued the links to addition by looking again at doubles. We noticed a pattern that each time the answer increased by 2. We even tried to do doubles up to 10+10=20. Some children noticed a pattern that is 2+2=4, 20+20=40….wow.

In money we had to work out which coins we could need to buy something that cost 6p or 12p etc. The children enjoyed this and would love to practice this at home.

Literacy

This week we learnt “oa” and “ow”. We saw that oa as in boat and goat mainly is in the middle, and that ow as in sow and row is mainly at the end of words. We also learnt 2 new tricky words one and you.

IDL/Writing

We read a book called “Oi, get off my train”, it was all about endangered animals trying to get on the train for safety. We then wrote our very first story based on the book. We did a plan first where we drew the beginning, middle and end. We then used the plan to help us write a story with a beginning, middle and end. Mrs Gordon could not believe the quality of our stories!

Health and Wellbeing HWB

This week we were learning about living and growing things. In particular the plan life cycle and the journey from seed to seedling and then plant. We talked about the things a plant needs to survive, light, air, water and soil.

Happy weekend!

P1a weekly news

Literacy

Our new sounds this week were ‘igh’ and ‘y’ which both make the I sound. We learnt that igh is a trigraph and talked about tri meaning 3. We remembered the rule that most times ‘igh’ goes in the middle of words and y at the end. We need lots of practice though as it is very tricky…. Our new common words were “come” and “said”, most of us already knew these from our reading books.

On World Book Day we read with some of the P3’s. Some of us read to the P3’s and some P3’s read to us. You can see some of our siblings reading together which was lovely! D was so tired that his story made him fall asleep in our reading corner…

Numeracy

Our subtraction journey continued with a dip into the links between addition and subtraction to make “fact families”. This is a very tricky concept that we will revisit regularly. An example with 2,8 and 10 is 2+8=10, 8+2=10, 10-2=8, 10-8=2.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a weekly news

Literacy

We learnt 2 new digraphs this week “ee” and “ea”. It is quite hard to tell which one to use so we are trying to practice this as much as possible. We are pointing to our ears for the ea and our eyes for the ee (like see). We also worked with partners to find ee words in a story.

Numeracy

In subtraction this week we tackled the tricky topic of missing number sums. P1a worked so hard and shared their strategies with the class. Some people used fingers, some used blocks, some number lines and some just did it in their heads…It was especially hard when the first number was missing eg ? – 2 = 8.

We also had to use different strategies with money this week. We had a jar of coins and had to add them up. Then we had to fill a jar with the coins to make an amount eg 12p. Some of us had to work out that to make 86p we should first start with a 50p. Mrs Gordon couldn’t believe how well we did!

IDL/Transport

This week we have been designing and describing trains.

Fairtrade

We had a visit from 2 ladies from the Linlithgow Fair Trade group. We learnt all about farmer’s getting a fair price for their products and played some games. We then got to taste some yummy Fair trade chocolate!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

P1’s Magic Train Journey and more…

This week we continued our Magic Train Ride journey as part of our transport focus. We had imagined we were on a magic train and we wrote and drew about what we saw. Mrs Gordon and Mrs Reid were really impressed with our descriptions. We also had a lot of fun making tickets and building trains and stations.

In numeracy we continued our subtraction journey. We loved ordering our number line and then jumping to practice subtraction number sentences.

We read the Great Pet Sale again as part of our money work. We even had our own pet sale where we had to make a price tag, put it on our pet and then find the correct coins to buy our toy…what fun!

We decided to make Valentine Cards for our loved ones. N has a real talent for making 3D roses and taught the whole class including Mrs Gordon how to do this!

The week was Scotland loves languages week so Mrs Gordon had 2 of her P5 Language Ambassadors come and teach “el gruffalo” in Spanish to the children. We learnt head, shoulders, knees and toes in Spanish and numbers to 5. Que bien!

Happy long weekend, Mrs Gordon, Mrs Reid, P1a and P1b x

P1a out and about at the park

Our new digraphs this week were ‘ai’ and ‘ay’. We learnt that shy ‘i’ likes to go in the middle around his friends whilst toughy ‘y’ likes to be at the end of words. We really liked to do the actions for these.

We all loved our house treat trip to the park on Wednesday. As you can see from the photos we really enjoyed our exciting trip when we got to play with our friends.

In numeracy this week we continued our subtraction journey. We really enjoyed the skittles, subtraction bus stop game and subtraction smash with the play dough. We are all starting to remember our subtraction facts from 10. We also had fun with money. This week we used different coins to make different amounts. We also read the great pet sale, next week we are going to have our own pet sale and pretend to sell some of our class and own soft toys.

In IDL we launched our new topic for this term. It is a history topic where we will be looking at transport, our first port of call is trains. We went on a magic train journey with our magic tickets and had to draw a picture of what we could see from our train window. This was the planning for our writing which we will do on Monday when we will get back on the magic train. Mrs Gordon can’t wait to read what we saw from the window…

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a.

Subtraction Action in P1a

We have been very busy working on subtraction in P1a. We really enjoyed using our number tiles to make a number line in the corridor and get our friends to jump out number sentences. We also had to do a subtraction colouring Elmer where each number had a colour, we had to work out that 10-2=8 and then that 8 was black. You can see some more of our fun activities below such as ask a partner subtraction questions and farm animal subtraction.

In literacy we learnt 2 new digraphs this week, th and wh. We have found it pretty tricky to say f and th differently so have been practising making sure our tongue sticks out when we do th….Our new tricky words were ‘be’ and ‘she’.

In French we learnt more about “la famille” using our friend Camembear. We learnt ma mère, mon père, ma sÅ“ur et mon frère.  We love learning French and Mrs Gordon hopes lots of us can come along to the family fun language event on Thursday 21st February in Linlithgow Primary School.

In ICT this week we worked with our P3 friends to log on to the netbooks and into our own Education City accounts. This allowed us to play numeracy and phonics games. We had great fun!

Happy weekend Mrs Gordon and P1a

Chop Chop Choppity Chop in P1

Another busy week in P1.

In literacy our new digraph was “ch” Mrs Gordon was really impressed with how well we could switch between “sh” and “ch” and tell which was needed where. We had great fun singing “Chop, Chop, choppity chop” whilst we peeled and chopped vegetables and made vegetable soup. We all loved chopping…we also loved eating our soup the next day! Mrs Gordon had to scrape the pan as everyone wanted seconds…It was lovely to have warm soup on such a chilly day. Have a look at us making and eating the soup.

In numeracy we continued our subtraction journey. We really enjoyed jumping along a number line that we made in the corridor to show how to take away. We also continued with our money topic and enjoyed playing coin bingo and guess the coin. Make sure to have a look at some coins at home and see if you can tell your parents what they are.

We had a Scots focus this week and learnt all about our famous Scot “James Watt”. We learnt how he invented an improved steam engine and developed the term “horsepower”. We could not believe that his engine was as strong as 26,000 horses! What a lot of horses. We also made our own shape steam engines using 3D shapes, what fun!

Have a look at our confident individuals below. They presented a short summary about James Watt and our shape steam engines.

Happy weekend from all of P1.
