Primary 5/6 Week – beginning 9th March

Following P5’s obstacle courses last week the class were organised into groups and created their own mazes with building bricks. Using these mazes their task was to code the Sphero’s through from start to finish. They did a great job and every group managed to complete the challenge! Next week we hope to complete the Chariot Challenge!

P5/6 have been loving their digital literacy and this week we focused on creating a Microsoft Team for our class. This is a super learning tool that we can use when completing homework tasks and working collaboratively in class.

In Numeracy this week we started learning about Fractions. We have explored the meaning of the numerator and denominator while beginning to identify equivalent fractions. The class will investigate this further next week.

We are continuing to learn about the Scottish Wars of Independence and this week we were learning about Robert the Bruce and his journey to becoming the King of Scotland.

While the P6’s were enjoying their after show treat the P5’s had fun trying to replicate some Celtic art. We discussed the intricate patterns that can be seen and how we could create our own. It was a challenge!

Have a nice weekend everyone

Primary 5/6 week beg. 19th February

Even though it has been a short week P5/6 have been super busy!

In Numeracy, we consolidated our learning on decimals, in particular adding and subtracting them. We hope to move on and look at fractions soon. Hopefully our understanding of decimals will help us identify a connection between the two.

Last week the class completed lots of research about the Battle of Stirling Bridge. This week we wrote newspaper articles about the battle. We focused on including a catchy headline, quotes and writing in the past tense.

We have organised ourselves into small groups and are in the middle of planning obstacle courses to drive the Sphero’s through. Hopefully we can then transfer these skills to creating a course that we can then code the Sphero’s to travel through on their own.

While P6 have been busy with FAME the Primary 5’s researched the armour and weaponry that was used during the Scottish Wars of Independence. They then created life size drawings of soldiers, showing the clothing worn and some of the weapons they would carry. They are huge and look amazing on our classroom wall!

Have a lovely weekend,

Primary 5/6

Primary 4/5 – Week Beg. 11th March

During our 8th NYCOS session we learned a new song called, ‘Someone Sitting on a High High Hill’. We really enjoyed it!

In our writing this week we focussed on being presentation perfect. This helped us improve our writing by making sure our spelling was correct, that we had remembered punctuation and our writing was structured well. We enjoyed up levelling our sentences.

As part of our Ancient Egypt topic we discovered facts about pyramids, tombs and the Valley of the Kings. We learned why they stopped building pyramids and started using tombs for their Pharaoh’s. In addition to that we learned that Christians destroyed and carved over Egyptian artefacts.

This week in Science, we finished our shaduf’s and began to test them to see if they could turn, pick up water and then pour the water into a bucket.

During our P.E. lesson we performed a small show for one another to demonstrate the balances that we have been learning in gymnastics.

We have had a great week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Primary 4/5

Primary 3 – week beg. 28th May

This week has been another busy week in Primary 3! We have just finished learning about different subtraction strategies and finished this topic by using the strategies we have learned to solve different word problems. Throughout the next few weeks we will be focusing on multiplication, revising what we have done so far and learning some more of the times tables. Please keep working on these at home.

Our Literacy this week focussed on writing an imaginative story which had to include a problem for the character and a resolution. The pupils did a great job achieving this while remembering to include capital letters, full stops and joined up writing. When completing comprehension questions this week we worked in small groups and shared answers together. This helped create some great discussion about our story.

We had great fun outside this week creating our own art work using natural materials. The pupils had been learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy and decided to try and create their own pieces using materials they found outside. Next week we plan to use these pieces of art to create line drawings.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McVay & Primary 3

Primary 3 – Week beg. 14th May

In Literacy this week we had the first set of class talks presented by the children. They all did a great job and had clearly spent a lot of time preparing them at home.

Our class novel this term is called Stig of the Dump which the children are really enjoying. We have been completing various comprehension tasks about the story and this week we focused on comparing two of the main characters, creating a venn diagram that showed their similarities and differences.

In Numeracy we continue to explore strategies to subtract two digit numbers. It was also National Numeracy Day this week and we celebrated by trying to solve some number riddles.

We also looked in detail at how we create an information poster. This was around the theme of plastic pollution. The pupils researched information and used it for their poster as well as including relevant pictures/diagrams and bold headings.

The beautiful weather allowed us to go outside most days for P.E and our daily mile. Hopefully it will continue into next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McVay

Primary 3 – Week beg. 30th April

This week we have had a big focus on developing our mental strategies for adding two digit numbers. We have had a lot of discussion about the different strategies that we can use to help us. We are all really confident when using the 100 square grid or a number line and are now challenging ourselves further by trying to do some of our calculations mentally. Next week we hope to explore our strategies for subtracting two digit numbers.

This week our Literacy focused on creating a fact file of all the information we had gathered while listening to a story. The children did an amazing job of these and remembered to label all their diagrams.

As part of our IDL we researched how long it took for different plastics to decompose. We couldn’t believe that it takes between 80-100 years for a can of juice to decompose! The pupils worked very well in small groups to complete this task.

This term we are focusing on our running, jumping and throwing skills within P.E. to help us prepare for Sports Day in June. We had great fun this week playing Dishes and Domes.

We hope you all have a lovely long weekend!

Mrs McVay & Primary 3

Primary 3 – Week beg. 23rd April

Now that the class have finished learning about Scottish Inventors we are turning our attention to Plastic Pollution and what we can do to help with this world wide issue. The pupils had a very detailed discussion about pollution and created some key questions that they want to answer throughout the coming weeks. Some of these are:

How long does it take for plastic to break down?

Who invented plastic?

How can we help?

How much plastic is thrown in the sea every year?

We have been challenging ourselves further in maths by learning about equivalent fractions! We played a matching game to help our understanding. As part of our number talks we have been sharing our strategies for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. Next week we may even move on to 3 digit numbers!

Mrs Birkett has been doing lots of French with us and this week we were beginning to learn our numbers up to 31! We are having fun playing different games and doing activities to help us learn these confidently.

P3 Scottish Inventors!

This week has been super busy for the class! We have had our first Futsal lesson, which we really enjoyed, we have been outside litter picking to help keep our playground looking great and of course the preparation for our amazing assembly!

The whole class presented confidently and with enthusiasm at both assembly performances! They spoke clearly and all knew exactly what to do and when. It was brilliant to see their creativity shine through!

Well done everyone!

Mrs McVay

Welcome back!

Welcome back everyone. Hope you all had a lovely break and are ready for the new term.

We have had a very busy first week back to school with planning and organising our assembly for next week. We’ve enjoyed looking back at our learning of Scottish Inventors to help us get ready for next week.

Throughout the week we have also started learning about fractions, in particularly, halves and quarters. Next week we hope to develop our learning further by looking at fifths and tenths.

In literacy we have been working in groups to look in closer detail at similes in text and how they are used. Each group did a great job of finding different similes with the short piece of text they were given. Next week we will be focusing on alliteration and questioning.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McVay and Primary 3

Primary 3

Throughout this week we have been consolidating our learning of division. In particular dividing by 3 and 4. We have also challenged ourselves further by using division to help us solve problems.
In Literacy we have been looking at our writing in more detail and what we can do to improve it. At the beginning of the week we looked at some simple sentences and explored the different ways we could make them more engaging for the reader by improving the punctuation, including interesting adjectives and using connectives to add more detail.
The class continue to be very enthusiastic about Scottish Inventors and this week we have been learning about James Watt and Sir Alexander Fleming. We have been having great fun learning about microbes and why we should always be washing our hands thoroughly!!
