P5A Snow days

Hi

I hope everyone has had fun outside today although I nearly got blown into the Loch this morning.

Unfortunately we have missed our RBS money workshop today but hopefully we will get it rescheduled.

Here are some websites you can access:

We have been working on multiplication chimney sums and problems with money.

For literacy and IDL we have been reading information about life during  Mary Queen of Scot’s  reign, comparing farmers, servants, and ladies in waiting, also life in Edinburgh with life in the highlands. We were listening to music from the Tudor/ Stuart period,  “Greensleeves”.

In Spanish we are continuing with greetings, hola, buenos dias, buenos tardes, adios, hasta luego, hasta manana,  etc. We were going to compare these with the French greetings.

Sorry I don’t have access to glow account at home so I can’t reset passwords for those who have forgotten them.

Hopefully  we will  all be back on Friday.

Primary 5A 23.2.18

This week in Primary 5 we have been researching the people who were part of Mary Queen of Scot’s life. We were highlighting the key facts and will produce a fact file for our timeline.

In maths we are continuing to reinforce our  multiplication tables and  are getting quicker when we play Buzz.  We are able to do chimney sums with decomposition and then used this method to help solve everyday problems. Next week we will focus on multiplication and division sums. We also have the RBS coming in to Primary 5  to support us in  a “planning a party” workshop . This will help to reinforce the work we did on money.

In literacy we looked at the different skills we need to use  to help us understand a passage. Sequencing and finding the main idea were the main points we looked at.

In science we continued to look at mixtures and how to separate them. This week it was sieving. We didn’t realise how many different uses they had. Our task involved separating 5 different substances by making our own sieves from card. We were very successful and the classroom carpet wasn’t too badly covered in rice and lentils.

After the staff course on “better thinkers, better movers” we have now started a block on basketball. It really got us thinking and concentrating. Next week we will be adding also throwing and catching a tennis ball while we are dribbling and passing!

Mrs Tulloch enjoyed watching our canon routines we put together with Mrs Reid at PE. Unfortunately the video clip is too large for the blog. Sorry.

We have started a new class novel ” Kid Normal ” by Greg James and Chris Smith. It has got off to  good start.

Letters have been sent home about our Palace visit on 5th March.

Primary 5A 16.2.18

A very busy week in P5A  as  we have been up to all different types of things math, shape shifters, castle shading, times tables and more!

We started learning about Mary Queen of Scots, and this week we have been learning about the places she visited. We sketched Linlithgow Palace, Stirling Castle, Holyrood and Chateau d’Amboise using  pencil and are now adding shading to them.

At science we investigated oil slicks and how to separate the oil from the salt water. We found the sawdust and the cotton wool were best at removing the oil. We were surprised that blood is a mixture and we looked at the things that are in our blood on Tigtag.

We are working hard at getting faster at our multiplication tables and played Buzz to help. We sang multiplication Mashup too.

As promised ! Here is the recipe that some pupils did to make slime. This was not done in school and we cannot give you exact amounts,

They used Optrex, PVA glue, food colouring, shaving foam and hand wash. Another group also used laundry detergent and glitter. The school cannot accept liability for this and it  requires parent supervision.

Primary 5A

In Maths we have been looking at  different types of bills and how they are calculated. We have been using our addition and multiplication skills to calculate the cost of different products and services that make them up.

Next week we are going to focus on addition and subtraction.

We have also started work on our new topic Mary Queen of Scots and have been recording information regarding what we already know about her life and work, what other information we would like to find out and the different ways we would like to learn about her. We then looked at the major events in her life and completed a time-line to cover this historical period.

In science we were looking at mixtures and our discussions even led on to the periodic tables! We looked at an oil spill and we are going to investigate which materials will be best for collecting the oil from the water.

We are now finished our powerpoints about Rennie Macintosh. Well done everyone.

Have a well earned holiday.

Primary 5A 2.2.18

This week we completed our Shape Shifter stories and we peer assessed them. Mrs Tulloch read some of our feedback and we discussed how to improve our writing. We then went back again to our stories to up level them, choosing a few sentences that we could improve on by adding more descriptive vocabulary or starting the sentence in an interesting way.

In maths, we continued to work with money and also revised how to do chimney sums and decomposition. We are looking at the layout of bills and comparing amounts.

In science we completed our foil boat challenge. Well done Ada and Isaac…..196 marbles was amazing and Mr Wells and Miss Baillie couldn’t believe how many it could hold. We then were able to use all the hard science vocabulary to explain what made the best boat: buoyancy, density and surface volume.

At PE we continued to play handball. It was quite competitive.

We are still presenting our powerpoints on  Charles Rennie Macintosh.

Everyone successfully recited or read aloud their Scots poems. Well done. Those that learned them off by heart went to a class of their choice to recite them. Mr Logan gave 10 house points as they were so good.

Science with Mrs Tulloch

Primary 5 have been learning all about our solar system. They have been demonstrating how the moon and earth rotate about the sun and showing the phases of the moon with Oreos. It was a very popular lesson this week.

P6 are currently finding out about renewable and non renewable energy. There has been lots of great discussions going on. It has been very topical with fracking in the news. We hope to get our water turbine, solar panels and wind turbine working to power bulbs, motors, etc.

P7 are looking a the huge topic of classification. They have investigated the the 5 kingdoms. P7A have been classifying flowering and non flowering plants within our school ground and P7B having been researching different species of the animal kingdom. They are now about to classify vertebrates and invertebrates.
