Primary 5 w/e 21st of June 2019

This week we played a different version of rounders – ask us about it!!

We have also met our teachers for next session.

We also spent some time getting to know the children who are going to be our P2 Pals next session, playing games outside in the sunshine. We’re looking forward to doing this again next week.

In maths we have begun to look at volume and explore containers and how much they hold.

We have been assessing our spelling and maths this week, looking at how we have improved over Primary 5.

We have mostly finished our non-fiction texts and are ready to share these with our peers and our P2 Pals.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 – w/e 14th June 2019

This week we have finished making our guitars in Science. They were reasonably successful and some of them played three different pitches.

On Tuesday we went to the book festival at the Rugby Club and learned about how Lari Don found inspiration for her books and stories.

We had a visit from the Linlithgow Dyers and we have been creating pictures for a competition launched by them.

We had a guided tour of Linlithgow Palace, where some ‘time travellers’ showed us around and explained the history of the palace and some of its famous residents. We also went to the new museum and explored some of the artefacts and history there.

We’ve had Sports Day and our school disco this week as well.

As part of our literacy work we are creating non-fiction books on a subject of our choice.

Have a great weekend

Primary 5 – w/e 7th June 2019

This week we have started to make guitars in Science. Our challenge is to make sounds that have three different pitches.

In maths we have been using tangrams to develop our problem solving skills. We have explored probability and the language that is used. We created our own probability lines. We also looked at co-ordinates and practised reading and writing them. We then had a go at creating shapes and characters through plotting co-ordinates.

In PE, we have continued athletics, practising hurdles. We had a quidditch session with Kieran, developing throwing, catching and team skills.

Some of us participated in the triathlon, cycling, swimming and running. We also did some Highland Games activities.

While the others were at triathlon, the rest of us played ‘The Pirate Game’, which included developing co-ordinate skills, addition and careful listening.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 w/e 24th May 2019

In maths this week we have looked at formal methods of division. We used the ‘step’ method of recording our answers. We also discovered how to calculate the distance around the perimeter of a shape. We took the trundle wheels outside and measured the perimeter of the school.

We used this information to create a more detailed map (which some of us drew to scale) in our topic lessons about mapping this week.

We were due our house reward from before the holidays, so we combined our Golden Time with this and had a great time at Dovecote Park this morning.

In PE we had a taster session for indoor kurling.

In Science, we have started a new topic about sound.  We explored sound through voice and musical instruments.

Have a great week,

Kind regards

Primary 5 – w/e 17th May 2019

We’ve had a busy week, with our visitors popping in and out and talking to us about our learning.

Some of our highlights this week include:

In maths, we have explored area, how to calculate it and created a robot with specific dimensions.

In storywriting we planned and wrote an introduction to a story. We included lots of description and were trying really hard to include connectives too.

In Science we explored buoyancy, creating our own boats from tinfoil and seeing how much cargo (marbles!!) they could carry. Ava and Aleisha’s boat carried 154marbles before it sank.

Our topic focus this week has been mapping and we created our own maps of the school and its grounds.

We explored kosher and non-kosher foods in RME, looking at how Jewish people separate these foods.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 – w/e 5/4/19

This week we uncovered our mummified apples and tomatoes. The liquid from the fruits had been absorbed by the salt mixture. Have a look at the photo and see what happened.

This week we have heard our Class Talks. Everyone did an excellent job of researching their topic and presented these to the class.

We completed a series of maths activities and discovered who had destroyed the Easter Bunny Costume.

We have spent some time evaluating stories and instructional writing this week and discovering what we missed out. These missing parts will become our writing targets in Term 4.

In Science we completed an egg drop challenge. Well done to Scott and Daniel on their successful egg drop.

In music we played a game of rhythms and pulse and the hot cross bun game. Ask us to explain how this works.

Take a look at our Canopic Jars too – we are really proud of how great these look!!

Have an amazing break.

Primary 5 – w/e 29th March 2019

This week we have learned lots about mummifying. We wrote instructions about how to mummify a pharaoh and we have mummified apples and tomatoes and are looking forward to seeing what they will look like next week. We have looked at some of the pharaohs from Ancient Egypt  and sequenced them using the dates they reigned over. We researched some facts about Tutankhamen comparing the reliability of sources.  We have also used clay and made our own Canopic Jars. Ask us what we put in them!!

In maths we were looking at 2D and 3D shapes, revising their names and properties. We have looked at the nets that form 3D shapes and also the technical names for different parts of the 3D shapes. Some of us were also using compasses to draw patterns with circles.

In music we played a game using beats for Egyptian words and we had to identify them.

In Science we were planning our egg drop activity. We will carry this experiment out next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 – w/e 22nd March 2019

This week we have begun to look at 2D and 3D shapes in maths. Some of us have explored the properties of triangles while others have discovered which shapes will tile.

In Science we have begun to explore how bridges are built. We built our own bridges to see whose could hold the most weight. We discovered that the bridges with the taller upright stands could hold more weight.

We have written stories about the African Savanna, which will be entered into the Round Table Marches Competition. -Good luck to us all!!

In HWB we discovered how our bodies change as we grow up.

In music we are learning a song about Egyptians.

We had a treasure hunt in the classroom, where we discovered how the Egyptians mummified the bodies before putting them in the pyramids. We also watched some videos that showed us how the pyramids were built.

Looking forward to another busy week next week.

Kind regards

Primary 5 w/e 1st March 2019

This week we have been learning about emails. We have planned an email and then had the opportunity to email each other through Glow.

In grammar, we learned about Collective Nouns – ask us for some of the more unusual ones!!

In IDL we learned about Egyptian Hieroglyphs and wrote messages of our own using these.

We had a visitor from Linlithgow Fairtrade, who shared information and chocolate!! with us.

In music we had the opportunity to play our Graphic Score. This sounded great.

In Science, we explored microorganisms.  We experimented with yeast, mixing it with a variety of materials to see which created the most carbon dioxide. We saw this through balloons being inflated.

Have a lovely weekend

Kind regards
