P2/3 and The Rubbish Dump Whale Assembly

Miss Prince is so proud of P2/3 for confidently delivering an important message about plastic pollution through their class assembly today.

Every single member of the class sang, danced and acted with a smile on their face 🙂

Here’s a wee synopsis of our story:

Five Sir David Attenboroughs were sailing across the sea when suddenly they spotted the Rubbish Dump Whale!

As you might have guessed, Rubbish Dump Whale lived in a rubbish dump. He was  lonely because all the other animals had gone. He wished for the sea to be clean once more and for all the other animals to return.

Then he met Ollie the Octopus and Bird. They worked together to deliver messages in bottles to the humans, asking them to stop putting plastic rubbish in the ocean.

Let’s make the oceans clean again for all the beautiful animals!

You can help by using paper straws and by always bringing a refillable water bottle to school.

Can we all please see the sea is beautiful

Can we all please, keep the oceans clean

Keep it out now guys, keep it out our lives

Can’t we at least try?

Can we all please, see the sea is beautiful tonight

Thank you 🙂

P2/3 out in the spring sunshine :)

After a sick start to the week (quite literally!) we are getting back to normality in P2/3. I won’t collect homework in tomorrow as lots of children have only just returned to school. Homework next week is to practise words for the assembly and to catch up on this week’s tasks and reading.

Our Big Writing Adventure this week made us miniature and took us to the beach! We wrote postcards about our trip; riding the waves on rulers, crawling inside mussel shells and climbing to the top of sandcastles! What wonderful imaginations we have in P2/3.

In Maths we started learning our 4 times tables, we played games on our fancy new board and sang some times tables songs. We also began our work on fractions of an amount, we can find a half and  a quarter of an amount by sharing objects equally into groups.

We’ve been out in the beautiful weather today; litter picking, practising our phonics words and playing a game of man hunt.

We also finished our See the Sea is Beautiful music video today, we can’t wait for you to see it next Friday!

Have a great (healthy) weekend 🙂

P2/3 the Pizzeria

We’ve hit the ground running in P2/3 this week, class assembly rehearsals are in full swing and we have had a great time setting up our classroom as a pizzeria to play with fractions.

We know how to find halves, quarters and thirds of a shape and we are learning how to write fractions correctly. Next week we will be moving on to finding a fraction of an amount.

In Art we drew beautiful pictures of the ocean and sea creatures, you will get to see these at our assembly. We’ve also made a whale and a boat big enough to hold 5 David Attenboroughs!

If you would like to practise our class assembly song at home, it is to the tune of ‘See Beneath your Beautiful’ by Labrinth.

Thank you for all the bits of costume you’ve sent in, it’s much appreciated.

Oh, last bit of very exciting news, we are extremely lucky to have a new smartboard! Miss Prince is still learning how to use it but the children seem to have the hang of it!

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince x

Whale watching in P2/3

This week our Big Writing adventure took us whale watching. We used information books, websites and videos to research killer whales. Did you know that a killer whale is actually the biggest species of dolphin?! We wrote a description of the whales for Alan’s travel journal and self assessed our writing to check we had used wow words and connectives.

In Maths we have been subtracting two digit numbers, breaking down numbers into tens and units and showing our workings. Here’s a good game for practising addition and subtraction using a number square:

In PE we were working on our dribbling skills, we are getting better at controlling the ball. Our favourite game is crabs and surfers, here are some photos of us in action:

We have also been busy learning our songs for the Easter service next Friday. We love singing in P2/3!

P2/3 on an Antarctic Adventure

Welcome back! Great to be back at school this week, the children were full of stories about their adventures in the snow; sledging, snow walks and igloos.

In Maths this week we have been using grid references and coordinates. We learned how to find a position on a grid and enjoyed playing grid reference bingo. We have also been working on subtraction, some of us were taking away 2 digit numbers and sharing our strategies with the class.

Our Big Writing Adventure this week took us back to Antarctica. We had to use sequencing words to tell Alan about the journey he would be taking. We absolutely loved using Google Earth to explore each step of Alan’s journey. Google Earth is a great resource to play on at home too! Here are some photos of our work:

We have been busy artists in class today but we can’t say any more than that…it’s a surprise!

I hope all the children have been completing all their Mother’s Day homework tasks… long may it continue!  Have a lovely weekend.

P2/3 doubling and halving champions

In Writing this week we started a Big Writing adventure, helping Alan to pack for his expedition to Antarctica. We used an atlas to research the conditions in Antarctica. We drew the items, labelled them and then we wrote captions in full sentences.

We all knew how to find the page about Antarctica using the contents page.

In Maths this week we have been focusing on multiplication and division. Using numicon, counters and cubes helped us to visualise grouping. We also worked on doubling and halving numbers to 20. We are beginning to develop strategies to halve bigger numbers. Miss Prince is very impressed by how focused and confident we have been in Maths this week.

In Art this week we had a great time making robot inventions out of recycled materials, here at some photos of the process:

Oodles of noodles in P2/3

This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year. We listened to a story about a girl celebrating Chinese New Year with her family, we made dragon fortune tellers and today we learned how to use chopsticks. We LOVE noodles!

P2/3 inventors, footballers and shop keepers

This week we have been getting stuck into our new topic; Scottish inventions. We turned our kelpie cave into an inventing corner, it has been a big hit! Thank you for all of the junk modelling materials, here are some of the inventions we have designed so far:

In PE this week we have been working on our football skills, we are learning how to dribble a ball through fun games such as Robin Hood and the body parts game.

Continuing with our non fiction text focus in literacy, we found interesting facts and wrote them in full sentences. We have also been learning how to write sentences in the past tense, we know that we can add ‘ed’ to the end of a verb to do this.

In Maths we worked on giving change, using subtraction strategies such as a number line to help us. We loved setting up our own shops and practising giving change. Here are some photos of our shops:

Have a lovely long weekend,

P2/3 time travelling!

This week we started our new topic; we are time travellers, travelling back in time to look at how Scottish inventors have shaped our lives today. We learnt about John Logie Baird, inventor of the television. It took John a long time to get his invention right, he made lots of mistakes but he never gave up. We think he was very resilient! We even had a go at inventing our own televisions, Miss Prince was very impressed by our creativity and imagination. Some of our ideas were: a television we can step inside and become the characters, televisions that can predict the future and 3D televisions that make us feel we are really there.
In Maths we started learning about money. We reminded ourselves of all of the coin values and we started work on adding amounts and giving change.
In Literacy we have all been working hard to meet our personal targets. We are really enjoying reading our brand new reading books and learning lots about the features of non fiction books.
Finally, in Health and Wellbeing we learnt about our emotions and how we can express our emotions through our faces and body language. Here our some photos of us exploring the different emotions:

Have a great weekend!

Travelling by Tuba and P2/3

Travelling by Tuba came to visit us today, it was a musical success!

In the morning we enjoyed watching Chris and Stewart perform, listening and responding to the music.

In the afternoon we took part in a workshop, where we got to try the instruments and play along to music. We even put on a wee show for the Primary 1-3 children at the end of the day. Miss Prince was very impressed by our sense of rhythm!
