P3 Weekly Reflection 31.08.18

Image result for green cross code

Another busy week in Primary 3 as we continued our Road Safety learning with a focus on the Green Cross Code.  The children demonstrated excellent understanding of how to use the Green Cross Code when practising on our road in the playground.  It would be great if you could practise using the Green Cross Code when out and about.

This week in Maths we have been learning about symmetry and the children demonstrated their understanding by colouring in some beautiful butterflies.  We also practised rounding two and three digit numbers to the nearest 10.

On Wednesday, we started to learn about germs with Mrs Fraser.  When I asked the children what germs were, Luke N told me they are “little bug things”.  The children drew interesting pictures of what they thought a germ looked like.

Yesterday we listened to some great speeches from the children who wanted to be considered as the class representative for the Pupil Council.  It was a close call but after a class vote I am delighted to announce that Olly and Euan will be our new class reps.  They are looking forward to their first meeting next Tuesday.

Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday next week at our Meet the Teacher event (Wednesday 5th September 6-8pm).

Welcome to P3

We have had a busy week settling into Primary 3 and have welcomed Kalista to our class.  The children are looking forward to getting to know each other over the coming weeks.  On Wednesday we made a start on our Road Safety topic with some interesting discussions about how we find a safe place to cross the road.  This year we will have a focus on the Green Cross Code.  Working together we have created our new class charter and our new class motto will be ‘Reach out and lend a helping hand.’  We have made some colourful t.shirts to put on our class welcome display which you will see when you come to Meet the Teacher in a few weeks.  Most of the children said they had enjoyed their first week in P3 and although Darcy said she was nervous on Tuesday, she said she is excited to be back and see all her friends. Rohan said he’s feeling good and has had a good week.  I have enjoyed hearing all the children’s holiday stories and look forward to working with them this year.  I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend.

P3 visit to the Kelpies & Helix Park

Yesterday we went to visit the Kelpies.

We learned that Kelpies used to live in water and they would appear as beautiful horses to attract people closer.  If you touched them, you would stick to them and get pulled into the water.  Once you drowned you would be eaten!

The Kelpies are called Duke and Baron (Duke has his head down and Baron looks up towards the sky).  They were based on real Clydesdale horses (called Duke and Baron).  The artist’s name is Andy Scott.

Clydesdale horses are bigger and stronger than other breeds.  They used to pull boats along the canal!

Each Kelpie has 464 steel plates.  We worked out that must mean there are 928 steel plates altogether!  It took 7 people to build the Kelpies over 90 days.  They are 30m tall.  They were built in 2013.  When they opened there was a big party and the real Duke and Baron came too!  They each left one of their horseshoes behind as a gift.

The best way to view the inside of the Kelpies is to lie on your back.

In the afternoon we visited the Helix Park.

There was a massive slide which everyone loved!  It was a bit scary though.  Lots of us challenged ourselves when we felt a bit scared of heights!

Science Club

There was lots of excitement in science club this week. The children discovered that there has been a theft; a locked treasure chest has been stolen from the science lab! The children are all now forensic investigators and have been very busy finding clues and collecting evidence.  Mrs Smith & Ms King are sure that the LVPS forensics team will soon solve the crime!

Sophia – We are solving a crime. We put on gloves and shoe covers, so we don’t leave foot marks or prints at the crime scene. We found clues, there was a note and chocolate that has a bite out, so maybe the person was hungry. There was a glass with a finger mark, and we also found a pen and a spider. The treasure chest and the key have been stolen. We looked at our finger prints and two of mine has stripes and swirly patterns on them. I like science club because we are solving a crime.

P3 Learning Reflection

Written by P3

We learned about beat and rhythm in Music with Mrs Murdoch.  We watched a band called Stomp who made music using their feet and brushes and then we had a go.  It was really good fun!  In our topic work this week, we were learning about Egyptian gods and goddesses.  We drew portraits of some of them and it was really tricky.  We can’t tell you anymore about them right now because we will be showcasing this work in our class assembly soon.  It was also challenging learning how to write our names in hieroglyphics but we all managed it!  We started a new Science topic all about germs and diseases.  We have started doing some research about infectious diseases and how to treat and prevent them.

In French we are now excellent at answering the questions: Quelle est la date aujourd’hui?  and Quel temp fait-il aujourd’hui?

Can you answer these questions?

We did athletics and rounders in PE this week.  It was terrific!

P3 Explore Ancient Egypt

Last week was a very busy week in Primary 3. We learned about lots of interesting things and in particular we loved learning about Ancient Egypt as part of our topic.

In Maths we learned how to carry out repeated addition and created some fantastic arrays using our whiteboards. We also learned how to do chimney sums using double digits e.g. 55+55=110 etc.

Our writing lessons were fun because we drew a monster and then we used descriptive language to describe it.  We used similes and different openers to make our writing more interesting. To make our monsters more realistic, we had to describe the arms, body shape, eyes, nose and teeth etc. Our Guided Reading  tied in with our topic.

For our topic we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt and some really interesting facts. This has helped us to develop new vocabulary.

We used ICT to create some wonderful power-points about Egypt that we will be showing at our class assembly. A famous pharaoh  was Tutankhamen  and we learned that he wasn’t very wealthy in comparison to the other pharaohs.  In London there is a museum that contains Tutankhamen’s chair.  He was the only pharaoh who had not been robbed from his tomb and a man called Howard Carter found his tomb.

We look forward to sharing more facts next week.
