This week in P3…

“We really enjoyed our art lesson this week.  We drew big flowers and then we put glue over all of the pencil lines.  Once it was dry we chose really bright coloured chalk to colour them in.  The glue left a black line that the chalk couldn’t stick to.” – Aydan & Ella

“I liked the art because it was really fun and I now know how to draw big flowers!” -Zara

(Look out for these flowers brightening up our new Quiet Zone soon! – Miss Marnie)

“This week I enjoyed PE because we learned how to do “keepie-upies” and “pizza slices” in Tennis!” – Oliver

“I liked using repeated addition to solve times table sums.” – Jacob C

“I liked Maths with Mr Keast.  We did the 5 times table and we had to solve the word problems.” – Tain

“I enjoyed making a Powerpoint about the Gift of the Nile for our Ancient Egypt topic.” – Euan

“I enjoyed working out the maths sums using different strategies.” – Rebecca C

“I liked sharing the “In the News” part of our April Home Learning.  I liked listening to what people had to say about the news stories.” – Kitty

“I enjoyed doing jigsaws because we worked together.  When we couldn’t do it we just kept on trying!” – Ellie

“I liked playing rounders!” – Aydan

“I liked the April Home Learning because it was really fun and we got to do lots of activities.  My favourite one was “Reading for Enjoyment” and I read Matilda!” – Lola B

P3 Numeracy, Maths & French

Following on from our numeracy PATPAL last week, Primary 3 have been sharing the different ways that they know to solve multiplication problems.

We worked with our talk partners to try out different strategies to help us solve some word problems:

We have also been exploring different ways to present data and used our French knowledge of numbers and colours to create class surveys. We used tally marks to gather the data and bar charts to display it.

Next week in French we will be learning more ways to answer the question: “Quel temp fait-il?”

Moving On

Dear parent/carer

From June 4th, I will no longer be the PE teacher at Livingston Village Primary school. I have accepted the post as Principal Teacher of the Scottish Attainment Challenge schools in West Lothian. This promoted post was too good an opportunity to turn down and I am very excited for this new challenge. I will be working between St Thomas’ Primary School in Addiewell and Bridgend in Linlithgow.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support over the years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I will miss the children, staff and yourselves incredibly.  I have so many happy memories and I have no doubt that PE and school sport will continue to flourish in my absence.  I will be back at the end of term to celebrate all our fantastic sporting achievements this year at the Sports Committee Assembly.

My last day at LVPS will be on Tuesday the 29th May. I will also be ensuring that our application for an unprecedented 3rd sportscotland school sport gold award will be completed and if successful I hope to come back in November 2018 for the presentation.

I am also delighted to announce how much we raised at SportaFUNd. Abbie, our former pupil, raised £360.00 with the bake sale, the ELC raised £395.00 and the school raised a whopping £1724.20.  This demonstrates all the hard work, dedication and commitment from everybody connected to this fabulous school.

Thank you once again.

Kind regards

Mr Stewart.

SportaFUNd Thursday 19th April

Below is information which has already been circulated through letter, email, facebook and twitter about our upcoming SportaFUNd day. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a big difference.

SportaFUNd

Dear parent/carer

As you will be aware, the school’s SportaFUNd Day is on Thursday 19th April within the school. We are holding a Sponsored Mile long obstacle course, various stalls in the playground including face painting, beat the goalie and soak the teacher amongst others and a Bake Sale to support former pupil Abby Cowan on her trip to Rwanda to build a new school.

All monies raised within the bake sale goes to Abby’s trip. All monies raised by the nursery will go towards new nursery play equipment. All monies raised by P1-P7 and the money from the various stalls goes to the school for new playground equipment, new PE equipment and towards the cost of transport to various sporting events.

For all of this to happen we need your support please. We are looking for baking donations, volunteers to help at the various stalls and volunteers to support the obstacle course. All 15 members of the Sports Committee will be supporting the event too.

Sportshall Athletics East Regional Championships

On Wednesday, 20 members from our P7 class took part in the Sportshall Athletics East Regional Championships at the Jack Kane Centre in Edinburgh. This is where the top two schools from City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian and the Borders take part in activities which include: 4 x 100m, over/under relay, obstacle relay, 6 lap parlauff, 2 lap relay, 1 lap relay, javelin, speed bounce, long jump, vertical jump, triple jump and chest push.

Our team placed 8th overall. Kirknewton Primary finished 10th which means although we were not crowned Champions on the day, we are the top performing school out of 67 in West Lothian. Another fantastic achievement. On the day our children demonstrated resilience, perseverance, motivation and superb sportsmanship. We cheered on the winners and all the other competitors and enjoyed a really great event.

National Puzzle Day 2018

Primary 3 celebrated National Puzzle Day on 29th January by completing LOADS of jigsaws!

Jigsaws aren’t just for fun.  They help to teach us vital skills such as concentration, attention, patience, planning, analysis and they help our memory.  Because we worked in teams we were also developing our communication and teamwork skills.

Did you know that completing a jigsaw actually uses both sides of your brain?  You use the creative side to imagine the finished image and the logical side to fit the pieces together!

Mad about Magnets in P3

Primary 3 were very excited to find out that they were going to be learning about magnetism in Science this term.  We quickly got to work to brainstorm what we already knew about magnets and what questions we had.  These questions are helping us to plan our investigations.

The most common misconception that we had was that all metal objects would be magnetic.  Some of us suspected that this may not be true but we had to investigate to find out more.

Ask us to tell you what we discovered!  Are all metal objects magnetic?  Why are only some coins magnetic?  What do the terms “attraction” and “repulsion” mean and what do they have to do with the North and South poles?

P3/2 Christmas Party

The children in Primary 3 and Primary 2 had a super time as they celebrated the end of the Christmas festivities with their party on Wednesday 20th December. The children enjoyed some fun and games including some traditional scottish country dance.  This was followed by party food and karaoke and rounded off with some excellent dancing in the dancing competition. Everyone had a lovely time and the teachers hope everyone had a nice relaxing holiday with their families.  Here are some photos of the fun!
