This Week in P3 – W.C. 14.3.22

In P3 this week, we have been learning…

In Numeracy and Maths, we started learning about fractions. Looking at the numerator, denominator and fraction bar. Then learned about unit and non-unit fractions. We used the concrete materials to build a Fraction Museum and took our partners on a tour of our Museum’s! We then were able to show our understanding of fractions by answering questions in a Kahoot quiz.

We took part in some wonderful lessons from the National Museum’s Scotland all about Dinosaurs which linked in well with British Science Week this week!

The STEM leaders worked with the class today to plant seeds into gloves using cotton wool balls. We will watch these grow and develop.

Happy Red Nose Day everyone!

P2 Learning Reflection for W/E 18.3.22

Ella – I have enjoyed PE. We were doing hockey. I was dribbling with the ball and we were controlling the ball.

Grace – I liked going in the gym hall for assembly. It was about red nose day.

Josh – We were trying to stop the ball before it hits the white line. You had to keep the hockey stick on the right side and turn.

Kyra – I enjoyed crazy hair day. We are raising money for Red Nose Day!

Rhy-Lee – I enjoyed making seed bombs. We had to put water in the big bowl. Then we had to rip up paper and put it in the water. Ms King used a blender to mush it all up. Then we put in blue food colouring. We mixed in seeds. Then we put the seed bombs in the ice cube tray and let them dry.

Willow – I enjoyed making the seed bombs. We put a lot of paper into a bowl with water in it. Then we waited five minutes. We put food colouring in it. We mixed seeds in it. Then we put them in trays.

Alexander – we were doing hockey we were doing a race and had to control the ball around the cones and then come back. You had to dribble the ball all the way.

Louis – We made seed bombs. We needed scrunched up paper and some seeds. Then we put it into a tiny pot. Then they dry up and that’s when we can throw them.

Elyas – I liked doing the seed bombs. We put paper in bowl and then we blended it. Then we also put food colouring in and mixed it. We put flower seeds in and then also mixed that. Then we put them in little containers and waited for them to dry.

Olivia – I enjoyed doing the seed bombs. We needed to tear up paper in warm water and it felt so nice. Then Ms King used the blender and got covered in the paper mixture. We put in some food colouring and then we mixed in some seeds. Then we let it dry.

Oliver – I enjoyed PE. We were doing hockey. We were controlling the ball. We had to dribble through cones.

Caleb – We made a box to capture a Leprechaun. I made it so it was like a box and I would pull the stick back and that would shut the box.

Georgia – I liked free play. We were trying to play a song we really liked. I had a jingle thing and Willow had a clicker thing. Rhy-Lee had the tambourine and Kyra and Ella had the maracas. Grace was using the guitar.

Arianna –  I liked crazy hair day. I had bunches.

Jack – I made a castle with the big blocks. We just stacked each brick and we made gaps for the gun holes.

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 18th March 2022

Good Afternoon.

In Literacy we have learned the split diagraph sounds ‘o-e’ and ‘u-e’ We taught ted how to write ‘o-e’ words, played roll and read, wrote u-e words, played u-e words snakes and ladders. For writing we worked in partners and wrote spring acrostic poems.

In Maths this week we continued to explore number bonds to 20. We used double sided counters and ten frames to help us. We matched ice cream to their partner cone to show bonds to 20, played number bonds to 20 bus stop and completed the missing number bonds on stars. We also explored odd and even numbers using Numicon.

This week was British Science week. On Monday we explored the life cycle of a bee. A bee starts out as an egg, then larva, then pupa and finally a bee. On Tuesday we had our P7 STEM leaders down to help us in an activity called Handy Gardener. We have planted five different seeds in a glove. We planted a broad bean, cress, chives, spinach and radishes. On Wednesday and Thursday, we watched a video all about dinosaurs from the National Museum of Scotland. It told us all about dinosaurs. We then drew our favourite dinosaur and found out what they like to eat, how long or tall they were and when they lived. We made our very own Pterodactyl peg. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

Jessica – “I enjoyed learning about Dinosaurs. I drew a Pterodactyl.”

Gracie- “I loved Gym. I liked learning the new star game.”

Leo – “I liked learning about the superheroes in the house corner.”

Aaron – “I loved learning the new games and playing in the hall and playing the mushroom game with the parachute.”

Matthew- “In gym we made a mushroom with the parachute. We went under it.”

Emily – “I made a bee with playdough. I liked Gym.”

Angus – “I liked playing in the tuff tray. I was learning about bees and playing with other people.”

Finlay – “I enjoyed doing PE. It is my favourite! I liked red light, green light. I was the traffic light and a car. In stars and catchers, I was the catcher!”

Ishanvi – “I liked the assembly because we were having red nose day.”

Have a lovely weekend

Miss Maclachlan

P2-1 Weekly Reflection 18.03.22

It’s British Science Week and we’ve had great fun developing our knowledge and understanding of magnetism, minibeasts, growth and human blood.

We developed our understanding of magnetism by exploring a variety of different materials. We made some predictions about which items would stick to the magnets and which items would not. We concluded that metal items would stick but Dylan reminded us that not all metal things are magnetic and we decided that plastic things and items made from paper are not magnetic. We were interested in why sometimes the magnets push away from each and would like to explore this further.

On Tuesday we participated in the National Farmers Union’s Science Farm Live lesson Fantastic minibeasts and where to find them. We learned all about minibeasts, their habitats, and the important jobs they do for British farming. We developed our understanding of lots of new scientific vocabulary including the terms habitat, pollinator, exoskeleton and larvae. We hope to go on our own minibeast hunt when the weather gets a bit warmer.

On Wednesday our Young Stem Leaders from P7 led our learning and taught us about growth when they helped us to complete the Handy Garden activity. We planted a different seed in each finger of a glove and discussed what the seeds would need to grow. The gloves are taped to the classroom window and we are excited to see which seeds grow the best.

Mrs Clyne has been introducing us to the world of engineering and on Thursday we learned about Ameya who is a biomedical engineer. He likes to help people stay healthy and designs blood tests to see if people are ill. We read a story called A Drop of Blood by Paul Showers and made our own blood in class. We learned that our blood is made up of red blood cells which carry oxygen around our body, white blood cells which protect us against diseases (they wrap themselves around the germs and eat them) and platelets which form a plug to stop the bleeding when we cut ourself.

Today we celebrated Red Nose Day with a whole school assembly and crazy hair. Thanks to all who gave a donation, it is much appreciated and will be sent off to support Comic Reflief and their funding efforts to help the organisations that are supporting people in the Ukraine just now.
