Home Learning Choice Boards Term 3 2022/23

As a school, we are currently re-evaluating our home learning grids. We are firstly focusing on P5-P7 home learning and are making changes to reflect the views expressed by champions, pupils and parents. We will then explore home learning from P1-P4.

The current P5-P7 home learning grids will last for a duration of 4 weeks. The next homework to be issued will have changes and alterations, and will reflect our new  home learning structure in P5-P7. This has been discussed with all pupils at this stage. Further information will be issued along with our new grids.

The Ben’s IDL Showcase

Last week, the Ben’s took over the Discovery Den area.

They has been working on their IDL topic ‘Ancient Civilisations’ and had so much amazing work, they wanted to show it off and plan a school event. Here is what they had to say:

In 4 main groups, we chose our Civilisation of interest: Ancient Romans, Ancient Egyptians, the Aztecs and the Vikings.

We organised ourselves into sub-topics and worked for 5 weeks researching, learning, discussing, planning and creating beautiful, amazing pieces of work that demonstrated what we learned from our research.

We set wrote poems and stories, collected data, made PPT’s, cooked food, conducted science experiments, created art pieces, performed drama pieces and made videos.

We used our teamwork skills to work together to build a picture of what we discovered.

They invited members of staff and other clans around and presented beautifully and confidently, the learning and knowledge they had on their chosen topic. Well done Bens!

Mealtimes at Calderwood Nursery

Rationale

‘Meal times should be viewed as learning opportunities where we take time to support and encourage children to learn the necessary skills for life.’

                                                                      Scottish Government, 2020, p. 57

The Scottish Government recognises that ELC experiences provide children with an opportunity to establish healthy eating habits in their early years. West Lothian Council will provide children with healthy, nutritionally balanced meals and snacks to support children to develop good eating habits and positive attitudes to food from a young age. All children in nursery are entitled to a hot meal and we would encourage children to try this hot meal. If for any reason your child wouldn’t like a hot meal there is a sandwich option or they can bring a packed lunch, please just let us know.

Instead of ordering your child’s lunch on the register we are going to trial ordering using a form each week which will be shared in the chronicle email each week. Order by clicking here.
