Our World War learning journey – Muir Clan

This term, Primary 7 have begun exploring the topic of World War II by using the powerful Sainsbury’s 1914 Christmas Truce advert as a stimulus for learning. Although the advert is based on a real event from World War I, it encouraged us to think deeply about life during wartime and reflect on the experiences of those involved.

While watching the film, we took notes, shared our responses, and discussed the key themes and messages the filmmakers were trying to convey. We then used the advert as a starting point for our response writing, a genre we will continue to develop throughout the term. As part of this work, we are learning how to explain our ideas clearly and support our opinions with evidence from the text to deepen our understanding and thinking.

P7 Adventure at Dalguise PGL

Our P7s recently returned from an unforgettable three-day adventure at Dalguise PGL, packed with excitement, challenge and lots of fun!

Throughout the trip, pupils had the opportunity to take part in a wide range of outdoor activities designed to test their teamwork, resilience and confidence. From tackling high ropes and climbing challenges to navigating obstacle courses and taking part in team-building games, everyone embraced the experience with enthusiasm and determination.

It was wonderful to see pupils stepping outside their comfort zones, encouraging one another and celebrating each other’s successes. Whether they were conquering a fear of heights, trying a new activity for the first time or developing their leadership skills, every child achieved something to be proud of.

Evenings were filled with laughter and opportunities to spend time with friends, helping to create lasting memories before the transition to high school. The trip also gave pupils the chance to develop their independence, responsibility and problem-solving skills in a new environment.

The staff were incredibly proud of the positive attitude, behaviour and teamwork shown by all of our P7 pupils throughout the three days. They represented our school brilliantly and were excellent ambassadors both on and off the activities.

A huge thank you to the staff who attended and helped make the trip possible. We are sure the memories made at Dalguise will stay with our P7s for many years to come!

Dalguise Camp Fire

Miss Burton had a fantastic trip to visit our Primary 7 clans at camp.

Tonight they had a camp fire with songs, chanting, stories and marshmallows.

P7 Cross Country Success!

On Tuesday, a group of our P7 pupils took part in a cross-country event, completing an impressive 1.2km run. It was fantastic to see the determination, resilience and effort shown by every member of the team, and we are incredibly proud of them all.

The event was a great opportunity for our pupils to challenge themselves, demonstrate their fitness and represent Calderwood with pride. Every runner gave their best effort and showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.

We are delighted to share that our boys’ team and one of our girls, Amel, have qualified for the Cross Country Finals in Bathgate on 8th October. This is a fantastic achievement and recognition of all their hard work and commitment.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a special well done to those who have qualified for the finals. We look forward to cheering them on in October.

Muir Clan Charter

Muir Clan – Our Clan Charter

This week, Muir clan have been learning about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and exploring the rights that all children should have. We began by discussing what a “right” is and why children’s rights are important both in school and in the wider world.

Together, we explored different articles from the UNCRC and talked about which rights are most meaningful to us in our school and classroom. Through thoughtful discussion and teamwork, the children selected four rights that they feel are the most important to display, promote and respect within our classroom environment.

The children then worked together to create a list of ways that they can respect these rights for themselves and for others every day. This helped them to understand that rights come with responsibilities and that everyone has a role in helping to make our classroom a safe, happy and inclusive place to learn.

We chose a theme for our Clan Charter, created a catchy slogan ‘Level up: Respect my rights, respect yours’ and added their own characters to make it unique and meaningful. We are very proud of the creativity, collaboration and respect shown throughout this learning.

Our Clan Charter will now be displayed in our classroom as a reminder of the rights we share and how we will respect these rights for ourselves and others to ensure we all feel valued, respected and supported.
