100 Challenge Ideas for Home Learning

This document, as the title implies, provides simple activities and challenges (bundled into curricular areas) without the need for much preparation.

Favourite Resources for Online Learning

This is a list of everyone’s favourite online learning resources. Most of these are free to access, but where there is a premium option or registration is required this is noted.

50 YouTube Channels for Home Learning

Without a doubt there will be some children loving the idea of doing schoolwork at home whilst, for others, they may not share their enthusiasm.   Therefore, this document  provides a  list of different YouTube learning activities such as:

  • The Numberblocks channel  – this has lots of great videos to help younger children learn about numbers, addition and subtraction.
  • SciShow Kids has a wide range of Science videos that answer different questions about the world.
  • Science Max carries out huge science experiments. Could your children try similar experiments, but on a smaller scale, at home?

Home Schooling Resources

This site has a comprehensive range of activities for children of all ages.  Many are free, some have a trial period whilst others may require the app to be downloaded.  Some of the activities children can investigate are:

  • Coding, Digital and Technical Challenges;
  • Arts & Crafts;
  • Health and Mindfulness;
  • History;
  • Literacy, Spelling and Writing activities;

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

Over the last couple of weeks Primary 6’s literacy has had a Christmassy feel! We have been studying Christmas advertising and have been creating our own storyboards based on the John Lewis advert ‘excitable Edgar’. In maths we have been finding out more about symmetry and have been designing patterns with two lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry.

Fair trade fortnight

Primary 4 went to the Lanthorn Centre yesterday to share their learning at a fair trade cluster assembly. The children presented the story of how chocolate is made and explained why it is important that we all buy fair trade products when possible. The presentation was so good that Ms. McMaster has asked us to share it with the rest of the school next week.

P4’s robot designing afternoon

This afternoon in Primary 4 we have been designing our own robots. We started off by learning about how creative and interesting robots can be and about some of the different things that they can do. We worked in groups to complete different challenges. We made robots that could move, for example they could spin and move forwards. We also made robots that could light up and could make different noises. Then we found out that robots can be artists and can make their own interesting patterns. We thought that the robots workshop was great and incredible!

This Week in P5

By Deeksha.

This week in school we had our P5 assembly all about the rainforest! We had learned about lots of things last term and wanted to share with the rest of the school. We have discussed species of animals, layers of the rainforest and the environment in it. We also found out about the life cycle of a frog!

In literacy, we were writing letters to the P4 class to tell them about life in P5 and what we do. We wrote about all of the trips we have been on and what we have enjoyed the most! We’ve also wrote Scottish poems in Scots language as part of our topic this term. It was really fun.

We have been getting better and better at using different strategies in maths to help us with our learning. We love number talks and discussing our learning with a partner, it helps us remember and learn more about it.

P4’s brilliant week

It’s been another busy week in Primary 4. As part of our maths work we have been doing division. We have been looking at the link between multiplying and dividing to help us.

As part of our Wallace and Bruce topic we have been finding out more about castles and their defences. We have started to draw labelled diagrams of old Scottish castles to show what we have learned.

In our free writing Friday time this week we are going to be writing stories that we will be able to share with our reading buddies next week. We are looking forward to writing our stories and having the chance to read these to our buddies.

Human Number Lines and All Things Scottish!

Primary One has had a great week with lots of new activities and challenges to start off the new year!  We have been solving problems, working on our listening skills and learning lots of new things about Scotland.  It has been braw!   The pupils particularly enjoyed organising themselves into human number line and could do it incredibly quickly after a couple of tries.

The children have all worked very hard this week so I hope they have a fun weekend but manage to get some good sleep as well.

Our Scottish theme in Primary 4

This week we have been learning more about William Wallace. We found out that he lived over 700 years ago and was an outlaw at the time. We have been designing our own ‘wanted’ posters for William Wallace.

We have also been using our literacy skills to help us write our own versions of a Scottish tale about a ‘wee bannock’. Some of our bannocks were a little bit naughty and got up to all sorts of mischief!

Happy New Year from Primary 4

It has been a busy first week back in 2019! We have started our Wallace and Bruce topic and have been making notes and finding out more about Robert Bruce. We have also been using our creative skills to draw illustrations of Bruce.

In maths we have been developing our multiplication skills. We have been practising our times tables and even using them to help us to multiply two digit numbers!
