We have been learning about the battle of Mons Graupius (AD 84) when the Romans tried to take over Caledonia. The Romans won the battle but the Celts did not surrender. The Romans had no supplies (as the Celts had burned all their homes and farms before going to the hills and glens for the winter) so they had to retreat back to the safety of the forts to the south. Caledonia was never to become part of the Roman Empire. We acted out the drama of the battle then wrote letters to our imagined family or friends to tell them what had happened. We all know how to lay out a letter, when and why we could use a letter and lots of facts about the battle! We also learned that you can use tea to stain paper to make it look old (but sometimes it makes ink smudge!!)
