MUSIC

‘RHYTHM AND SOUND’

WHAT YOU NEED :   A4 paper, ruler, scissors, pencil, red and blue pens, pencils or crayons

Rhythm is keeping time.  It is a strong regular repeated pattern of movement or sound.

TASK 1

* Using your own body, make a variety of sound patterns by clapping, finger clicking gentle knee slapping, foot tapping.  Can you think of any more ways to make sounds?

*Try mixing the sounds and compose a piece of  body music.

TASK 2

*Take your A4 paper and divide it into 4 strips lengthwise using your pencil and ruler. Divide each of the strips equally into 4 boxes. Now using your scissors,  cut along the LONG lines into 4 strips.

*  On another piece of paper,  draw some squares and circles which will fit inside the boxes on your strips.

*Colour the SQUARES BLUE.  Colour the CIRCLES RED.  Some of you might have done this with ABC MUSIC.

A SQUARE HAS 1 BEAT         A CIRCLE HAS 2 BEATS

*Compose your own rhythm pattern by placing the squares and circles onto the strip.

*Clap your rhythm pattern.    Add more strips.

REMEMBER. . . . . .  . . . . . . An empty box is a quiet rest and is part of your pattern.

Play your whole composition. Repeat it over again from the beginning when you come to the end.

*Experiment with a variety of rhythm patterns.   Try using beaters too.

CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE NOW A COMPOSER!!

DRUMMING PART 2

What you need : 2 beaters to use as drumsticks (wooden spoons are good),  computer if available

Last week we learned how to play a PARADIDDLE putting an ACCENT on the first beat.  How did you get on?

TASK 1

*We are now going to ACCENT the second beat of the PARADDIDLE   pa – RA – di – ddle still using the same hands as before – R L R R    L R L L         Do this over and over.

*When you have mastered this, change the ACCENT to the 3rd beat, then to the 4th beat.  Play slowly and build up your speed when you feel confident enough.   No prizes for rushing!

*You can also say the numbers of the beats if that helps you e.g.        ONE- two- three- four

one –  TWO –  three – four              one – two – THREE – four         one – two – three – FOUR

TASK 2   (Listening)

*On You Tube, listen to  The Beatles playing  ‘ Here Comes The Sun’

*Particularly listen to the variety of drum rhythms being played by the drummer, Ringo Star. How did the song make you feel?

* Your task is to design a front cover for the CD which is going to be re-released by The Beatles.

Remember to post your designs on the Blog.   I look forward to seeing your work.

ENJOY!
