The Hare and the Tortoise

The children loved the story of the Hare and the Tortoise and we used the story in Drawing Club. These are some of the drawing Club masterpieces.

The Primary 2’s re-wrote the story using pictures which they had sequenced to help them remember the story order.

They did an amazing job of using exciting vocabulary, description and phrases which they picked from listening really well to the story and Drawing Club and applying this to their own pieces of writing.

They read their stories out to the class and were proud to see them on display.

The Primary 1’s made the cute tortoises with beautiful collaged shells.

Taing Beach Exploring

The children had a great morning at the beach and they loved searching in the seaweed and amongst the rocks for crabs and shells.

 

Carina made this wonderful pattern with lots of similar sized whelks which she had collected on the beach.

 

 

 

 

 

We stayed at the beach for snack which is always a treat.

 

We do live in the most beautiful place with fantastic opportunities for learning outdoors.

Spring Flower Science and Literacy

The children have been learning about about flowers. They have been finding out about the different parts of a flower and how they grow and change.

They have been investigating and naming the different parts of flowers and learning about how dandelions use the wind for seed dispersal and bees take the pollen to different flowers.

This all ties in with discussions about Spring in the classroom and when we are outdoors.

The Primary Two’s used lots of verbs to write poems about Spring. They did a great job of making a good copy to display on the wall using ICT skills they have been practicing recently.

Easter Fun

The children have been learning a liitle bit about the symbols of Easter and they enjoyed listening to the story from the Bible.

They had great fun today doing an Easter Egg Hunt in the school grounds which resulted in some yummy chocolate treats at snack time.

This tied in with the patterns which the children have been doing in maths as they created repeating patterns using colours and shapes to design beautiful Easter Eggs.

The primary 2’s enjoyed coming up with ideas for this poem. They really got the hang of the rhyming words, descriptive language and rhythm of the poem and were super chuffed with the results.

They also got a chance to practise their IT skills, changing the size, colour and style of font as well as centering their work and then saving and printing it.

Mother’s Day

The children were really focused and wanted to make their Mothers Day presents really special for all the lovely mums out there.

They looked amazing and the children were really proud of them.

Willum and River had the job of filling up the cups- I think the mums in their houses have done well!

They wrote their names on tags and wrapped their gifts. I hope they all made it home safely.

Our Big Dino Build

The children started by selecting suitable boxes/junk to make their model dinosaur. They worked in pairs so there was a lot of discussion and collaboration to find the parts and join them together.

We spoke about how to make their model strong by creating different types of joins in using PVA and sellotape.

The next stage was seriously messy. They used papier mache to cover the dinosaur, focusing on the joins and making sure the newspaper strips went from one part of the model onto an adjoining part.

Once the models had two coats of papier mache it was time to choose colours for their dinosaur.

Once the paint was dry the children thought about the detail they wanted to add- eyes, teeth, claws etc.

The primary 2’s have been working on adjectives in their literacy work so this was a great opportunity to apply that learning to describing their dinosaur.

The writing was read out in class for the others to guess which model the description matched.

Their is now a little Dinosaur Exhibition set up in the school for the other classes and staff to visit to see the models and the writing.

A Burns Supper

Today we were learning a little bit about Robert Burns and how people celebrate Burns Night.  The children prepared tatties and neaps to go with the haggis. They were very careful with the peelers and knives listening well to instructions.

They all got to have some of the Burns Supper they had cooked. A few loved it, some liked it and quite a lot of children did not like it at all but had a try.

Chinese New Year

The children have been learning about Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Rabbit and they loved hearing the story about how the Emperor decided how to name the years after animals.

They have been counting to 10 in mandarin and having a go at using chopsticks in our little chinese restaurant.

As part of their topic this term the children have been learning about how we find out about the past. They made salt dough and created their own dinosaur fossils.

They have also been having a go at being archaeologists using tools to carefully search through the sand for important clues to the past.

New Years Resolutions

The class recycled old Christmas cards to make these stars to hang in the classroom.

On the back they wrote their New Years Resolutions. It was lovely to hear what the children would like to get better at and their wishes/promises for 2023.

Cards for the Community

All the children in the school made Christmas cards for the over 80’s who live in the community. The primary 1/2 class uses tatties to print penguins then put on details with cut paper and pens. They looked fantastic. I am sure the recipients were delighted with these precious cards.

The primary 2’s went outdoors to search for tiling patterns around the school. The found lots of great examples.

Back in the classroom they spent time investigating with flat shapes to see which ones tiled and which ones didn’t.

They had a go at creating their own tiling designs usisng the 2D shapes they have been learning about,

Making Words In Primary 1

It is so exciting to see how the Primary 1’s are using their phonic sounds to build words. Everyday we practise their sounds and do lots of games and activities to practise blending letters to read and make words.

They loved playing hopscotch in the classroom using wordcards.

Children In Need Day

We had a really fun day on Friday and the children( and staff) loved coming to school in their pyjamas.

 

This wasn’t a fundraiser this year but the children watched short video clips and we spoke about Children In Need in class.

I only managed to get one photo during the day and it was of little Pudsey coming into his newly built house by Carina and Carrie.

Haunted Houses

The children made a fantastic job of creating these haunted house pieces.

  • They began by painting the moon and then gradually mixing in blue paint to make their circular background.
  • The haunted house designs were completely done by themselves after looking at various shapes that would make the best spooky designs.
  • They loved drawing skeletons, ghosts etc. in the windows and adding a few bats, trees and gravestones to make it even more scary.
