The library strives to provide an up-to-date and balanced collection of resources which reflects the curriculum and students’ interests, for academic and recreational reading, wellbeing, and personal development, whilst also reflecting the society we live in whilst ensuring access to resources for users of different ages, abilities, learning styles, learning needs, backgrounds, disability, religion, and gender identities. The library is relatively well stocked with a selection of fiction and non-fiction books available for borrowing. Collection development is an ongoing process with new resources purchased according to need and old, dated stock withdrawn as appropriate.
Pupils and staff are encouraged to make suggestions for books as well as the Librarian determining curricular and leisure needs pretty much on a daily basis keeping a wishlist to refer to on a regular basis.
Library Stock
- Approx 6000 books and other resources – Fiction, Senior Fiction, Non-fiction, Reference (Orkney Books, Reference books, magazines, newspapers). Role Playing games, Board Games
- Local newspaper – The Orcadian
- Magazines
- Computers with Internet access
- OLIVER (Library Management System) – includes access to curated reading lists, and LearnPath guides to research topics across a range of subjects.
Special Collections
- Orkney Books – books on Orkney, by or about local authors / people. Also includes some on Shetland.
- George Mackay Brown Collection (archived) – books donated by the late local author. Now on permanent loan to Orkney Library & Archive.
