Summerlee Outing

Today the pupils from primary 5/6 and 6/7 went to Summerlee Heritage Centre in Coatbridge as part of their WW2 topic. Both classes had the opportunity to take part in a workshop – where the children became code breakers and had to solve the puzzle in order to find what they were looking for. They then had to search the museum and when they found their item got the opportunity to handle original Ww2 items related to a theme, then present to the rest of the class detailing the importance of their items during war time.

The pupils also had the opportunity to go on a trip down the mine and witness some of the conditions that miners used to work in – and got to travel on the tram! They also visited the row of cottages and saw different living conditions through the generations!

As it was such a nice day primary 5/6 had lunch outside and then got to play in the park! I think all the children would agree that it was a fantastic day!

Art Fortnight

P5/6 have been extremely interested in Art Fortnight. Through research undertaken in the class they decided that the first artist that they wanted to study would be Bridget Riley. She is an artist who specialises in OP Art – representations of optical illusions. The children have enjoyed learning about her life, the art she has produced and creating their own art in preparation for the art show. Their second artist has still to be determined but they already have several ideas in mind.

It will be alright on the Knight!

Primary 3/4 have been learning about the process of becoming a Knight, during Medeval Times.  To be chosen to train as a Knight was a real privilege and young boys trained as a Page, from 7 years old.

The boys and girls used their notes to write a Persausive Genre.  In their writing, they used the information about the process that Knights went through, in order to persuade young boys to sign up.

We have also been exploring how Knights dressed through the use of interactive dressing up games and books.

Christmas in P3/4

The boys and girls in Primary 3/4 have been learning all about the features of Christmas this week.  Each morning when they open their class Advent Calendar, the children have been performing acts of kindness as well as enjoying a delicious sweet. They have been helping in and around the school by offering to tidy out their class.  On Tuesday, the boys and girls visited the nursery to showcase their learning.  This involved them presenting their Christmas poetry in a way that is engaging for the nursery children.

Today’s learning experience involved the children using a range of media to create Christmas Crackers.  The children have also made Angels and researched the symbolism of Angels in the Nativity story.

St Andrew’s Hospice – Meet Oscar!

Week Beginning 21st March 2016

This week the pupils met their new class teddy, Oscar. Oscar has come from St ANdrew’s Hospice to make friends with the Primary 2 pupils at Stane Primary.

The pupils enjoyed making Oscar feel at home by telling him all about their own favourite cuddly teddy bears.

Oscar brought along his very own passport where the boys and girls enjoyed finding out about Oscar’s likes and dislikes. The pupils then had fun creating their very own passport. They were very enthusiastic about telling Oscar all about themselves.

Oscar had fun when he made an appearance at the Easter Service this week. Rachel was giving the important job of looking after Oscar during this service. Abbie had fun when she got to take Oscar into assembly and he loved being part of the boys and girls success.

The pupils did some drama work on the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. They had so much fun acting out some the scenes and the different obstacles in the story. Dylan was chosen to pretend to be the dad from the story and we had Oscar as the bear. The pupils enjoyed questioning the different characters and hearing different points of view.

Oscar has had a great week and is looking forward to another fun filled week with the boys and girls.

‘The Best Day Ever!’

P1/2 and P2 had an amazing day on Thursday when they visited Deep Sea World and Aberdour Beach to consolidate their learning in class over the last term.

When we arrived at Deep Sea World we explored the rock pools and tanks before taking a journey through the tunnel under the sea! We loved seeing the Sharks and the fish swimming above us.

We then had the opportunity to watch the seals being fed. They had lots of fish for their lunch and they looked like they enjoyed them as much as we enjoyed our packed lunches!

After a quick break for lunch we jumped back on the bus and soon arrived at the beach. We were very lucky as the weather stayed dry so we could enjoy our time there.

We quickly made ourselves comfortable – some of the children set out their towels ready to ‘sunbathe’ while others quickly got to work building sand castles, digging holes and burying the staff in the sand! The school treated everyone to a delicious ice cream which we devoured before setting off again for school.

It was a fantastic day and the staff were delighted with the excellent behaviour and attitude displayed by our pupils throughout. Mrs Linfoot and Mrs McLean were very proud of them. Kenzie summed the day up perfectly when he said, ‘That was the best day EVER!’ As we travelled home on the bus!

People Who Help Us – The Police

Week Beginning 14th March 2016

In Primary 2 this week, the pupils focused on the police service. The role play corner was set up as a police station. The children had great fun role playing the different jobs police officers do. They created their own police hats and police badges and loved using these in the role play corner.

The boys and girls created their own police puppets. Kati came up with the idea of putting on a police puppet show. Most of the pupils joined in and enjoyed putting on a performance at the police station.

The pupils found out about fingerprints this week and enjoyed using the paint to create their own fingerprint. Demi was particularly interested to find out if they were all different and why they were different.

The children had an exciting afternoon on Thursday when the police visited P1/2. Pupils loved going out to the police van and Beth was very pleased when she was put in jail!

The pupils found out that police often solve mysteries and look for clues. On Friday afternoon, I had set up an investigation for pupils. The pupils were very enthusiastic about looking for each the clues to get their prize. They loved looking for each clue and were very pleased when they found the prize of sweets!

“I absolutely loved that Miss Penrice” – Kenzie

Paramedic Week

Week beginning 7th March 2016

This week the pupils were learning about the ambulance service and paramedics. The pupils had fun learning about the different utensils that doctors use and they loved playing with the doctors’ bag from the nursery. Demi did well at naming all the utensils and when the paramedics visited us on Thursday, she was very enthusiastic to tell them what she knew.

The boys and girls had a very exciting afternoon on Thursday when the paramedics visited us. Lucas enjoyed trying on the bandages and playing with equipment.

The role play area was set up as a hospital. Everyone loved pretending they were paramedics, using the costumes and the items the paramedics left for the children. They had great fun playing in this corner. The boys and girls were also given prescription forms which they could fill out. The children had fun writing these out and they pretended to give each other medicine.

The pupils know that medicine is safe from the doctor and can identify which medicines they have used and had fun cutting and sticking these into their jotters.

Next week, Primary 2 will go onto to look at how the police help us.
