Work Experience Pupils

We will welcome St. Aidan’s HS pupils, Miss Reynolds and Miss Dunn, to Stane Primary this week as part of their S4 Work Experience.

Summerlee Outing

Today the pupils from primary 5/6 and 6/7 went to Summerlee Heritage Centre in Coatbridge as part of their WW2 topic. Both classes had the opportunity to take part in a workshop – where the children became code breakers and had to solve the puzzle in order to find what they were looking for. They then had to search the museum and when they found their item got the opportunity to handle original Ww2 items related to a theme, then present to the rest of the class detailing the importance of their items during war time.

The pupils also had the opportunity to go on a trip down the mine and witness some of the conditions that miners used to work in – and got to travel on the tram! They also visited the row of cottages and saw different living conditions through the generations!

As it was such a nice day primary 5/6 had lunch outside and then got to play in the park! I think all the children would agree that it was a fantastic day!

Tuesday 15th March 2016

Two children from Primary 5 took part in the North Lanarkshire Cross Country Finals today. I was very proud of their effort and stamina – they did the school and themselves proud!

I enjoyed teaching P5/ 6 this morning – the children were learning to get meaning from poetry.  The poem was about Jack Frost and the ‘game’ he plays during the winter time coming to an end as Spring approaches.  The children made some thoughtful contributions to the discussion – especially when we discussed personification.  They could give lots of examples of times when the weather is personified!  Well done P5/6.

The cashless system is working very well in our school cafeteria.  The children are all remembering to top-up their cards during Breakfast Club time or interval and (more importantly) remembering to put their cards back in the boxes after they have bought their lunch.

At the moment, we have not introduced the online payment system but we hope to soon.

Letters were issued today about two exciting excursions.  Primary 1/2 and 2 are going to visit Deep Sea World in Edinburgh next Thursday and P3 and 4/5 are going to Kripsy Kreme doughnuts in Edinburgh as part of their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory learning.  Please return permission slips and payment as soon as possible.

Tomorrow Mrs. Scott will welcome invited parents to the school to take part in a Paired Reading programme and Miss Thomson’s class will be going out of school to release the fish eggs they have been looking after into the local river.  In the afternoon, P1/2 will be visited by the local Co-op to judge their Easter colouring competition. There will be prized for 1st-3rd place plus a Creme Egg for every pupil in the class.

Sky Academy Visit

Today thirty-four Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils went on a visit to the Sky Academy in Livingston. They had the opportunity to produce a news report.

The report was based on Recycling – which has been a focus of our learning in class.

The children were split into groups and each assigned roles such as editor, reporter, producer, screen writer. They then worked together in their groups on a section of the report.
Group 1 – introduction,anchor
Group 2 – roving reporters
Group 3 – eye witness
Group 4 – interviews
After they had worked together in their groups to produce their own part of the report, all parts were then combined to produce the final piece..

The kids had a fantastic day and a wonderful opportunity to experience how a news report is made. Some of the comments were …

Miller – “It was a good experience!”
Aidan – “It was fun finding out about how the cameras work!”
Hayley – “It was awesome the equipment we got to use!”
Lewis – “Loves the technology!”

Road Safety Magic Roadshow

Children in the classes of Mr. O’Donnell, Miss Renton and Mrs. Robert will travel to Alexander Peden Primary School on Friday morning to see a ‘Road Safety’ Magic Show.

Please ensure that the permission slips have been returned to school by Friday morning at the very latest to ensure your child can go on this excursion.
