It will be alright on the Knight!

Primary 3/4 have been learning about the process of becoming a Knight, during Medeval Times.  To be chosen to train as a Knight was a real privilege and young boys trained as a Page, from 7 years old.

The boys and girls used their notes to write a Persausive Genre.  In their writing, they used the information about the process that Knights went through, in order to persuade young boys to sign up.

We have also been exploring how Knights dressed through the use of interactive dressing up games and books.

Happy New Year!

Primary 3/4 are glad to be back at school and are ready to learn!  They have been exploring the concept of money this week and have been totaling amounts.

In P.E they have been learning how to hold a tennis racket and have been using their hand to eye coordination, to control the tennis ball.

The snowy weather allowed for a very slippery “Walk a Mile.”   It was more like “Slide a Mile!”

Christmas in P3/4

The boys and girls in Primary 3/4 have been learning all about the features of Christmas this week.  Each morning when they open their class Advent Calendar, the children have been performing acts of kindness as well as enjoying a delicious sweet. They have been helping in and around the school by offering to tidy out their class.  On Tuesday, the boys and girls visited the nursery to showcase their learning.  This involved them presenting their Christmas poetry in a way that is engaging for the nursery children.

Today’s learning experience involved the children using a range of media to create Christmas Crackers.  The children have also made Angels and researched the symbolism of Angels in the Nativity story.

Seasonal Change

The boys and girls from Primary 3 have been using their observational skills this week, to help them to write an explanation genre in taught writing.

They explored how the Scottish weather affects the behaviour of trees.

Mia was able to explain that ” trees drop their leaves and seal the spots where the leaves have been”.

Teighan  could write an explanation about why the trees seal the spot, where the leaves have been attached.

Sophie further explained that they do this so that fluid cannot flow out of the leaves and this causes the leaves to fall. The falling of the leaves helps the tree to survive the cold air of Winter.

Brain Training

The boys and girls have been training their brain recently.  They have been playing a memory game called Witches Soup. Each child had to choose a disgusting ingredient to make a pot of soup. The game got more difficult as it progressed because the children had to recall and recite prior ingredients.

Playing these types of games helps the children to improve their attention skills which can lead to successful learning.

JRSO and the CO-OP

The Co-op visited the boys and girls from Primary 1 and Primary 1/2 last week. The children listened to a talk on road safety and created a colouring sheet, to help remind them to wear bright colours, so that they can be seen.  This is extremely important , especially with the darker nights drawing in.

Here are some of the pictures, taken by the JRSO Safety Officers.

Ancient Egyptian Artefacts

The boys and girls from Primary 3 and Primary 4/5 have been extremely busy both learning about and re- creating  Ancient Egyptian artefacts. Among the atrefacts were  canopic jars.  The children learned that during the mummification process the organs of the human body were removed and preserved separately in canopic jars.  The children had previously learned about hieroglyphics and they used this prior learning experience to decorate the jars.

The children were exploring how the Ancient Egyptians highly valued personal decorations and embellishment.  Jewellery was worn by both men and women of all social classes.

The children chose which materials they would prefer to use to design and decorate their own collar and cuffs.  We are all looking forward to showcasing what we have learned about at our Primary 3 and 4/5 class assembly on the 30th of October.

Ancient Egyptian Pyramids

Primary 3 and Primary 3/4 classrooms have been transformed into a scene from Ancient Egypt this week. The children have been proudly bringing in their technology homework.  The children were set a task of creating their own pyramids.  This was to enable children and their parents to work collaboratively and develop an understanding of materials that can be used in technology.  The homework task also allows the children to  focus on their practical skills, using a range of tools under their parents supervision.

I was so pleased to see the children thinking of the environment and remembering that we are an Eco school.  Most of the materials used were recyclable and we even have a pyramid made from cake!

I think that there are some of Scotland’s  future creative designers and architects among the children who have already brought in their pyramids.

Watch out for pyramid houses in Shotts in 2030!

Instructional Writing

The boys and girls in Primary 3 were  writing  a set of instructions today, during their Taught Writing lesson, to help them to make  a sandwich.

Before the lesson the children got to make their own sandwich. This experience helped them to chronologically order the instructions.

It was lovely to see the children so engaged in their writing and of course, the sandwiches were yummy too!

Ancient Egyptian Artefacts

The boys and girls from Primary 3 have been extremely busy this week, learning all about Ancient Egyptian Artefacts.

They have used the information to create new and exciting replica artefacts.

Some of the children from Primary 3 and 4/5 have also brought in their Pyramid Projects. These look wonderful and we will have them displayed during the class assembly.
