Full STEM Ahead in P7c this week…

During STEM week, some people from different careers came in to teach us a little bit about what they do. We all got some insight on what it’s like to do certain jobs.

  • Dr Russell works as a doctor in the Royal Navy. He told us he doesn’t just deal with injured soldiers, he also deals with injured civilians. One of the things he told us was that one of the islands he visited contained an Ebola epidemic. He and the other officers assisted the people in the country with medical supplies, treatment and food.

  • We used our problem solving skills and team work to solve these tricky maths problems.

  • John from Strathclyde University came into our class to teach us about what it’s like to solve crimes. We were given a sheet of clues and we had to use our mathematical knowledge to complete the clues. Each clue displayed some information on who the killer was, and at the end, he did an experiment with us which helped us track down the killer. We all agreed that it was an amazing experience for us, and it really showed us how much it takes to solve crimes.

  • Mr Abbott came in and taught us about his job, as he works in NCR. His job is to manage computers and make sure that the world runs properly. Without him and the many people who work in NCR, all our electronic devices wouldn’t be running correctly. He has a very important job, and if he doesn’t do something correctly, it could greatly affect the company. The NCR Corporation is an American company that makes self-service kiosks, cash machines and so much more. They provide IT maintenance support services. In other words, without all the NCR team, we may not be doing so well.

  • Last, but certainly not least, 20 pupils mixed from the two p7 classes got to participate in building a scale modelled cable bridge. We were separated into two separate groups, and we each got a job as a fixer or a lifter. Two pupils got to be production managers making sure nothing bad happened and that the bridge was perfectly fine to walk across.

We all really appreciate everyone who took the time to come out and teach us! Thank you.
