Room 14 – October Learning Blog!

Literacy

This month in Literacy primary 7 have definitely achieved their target of working more independently.  Each group have been working on their own individual novel applying their comprehension strategies.

Commas

The commas have reached Chapter 6 of Kensuke’s Kingdom and started making huge versions of the book’s characters this week. Look out for our finished character learning wall in our next blog!

Full Stops

The full stops are on chapter 4 of their Novel ‘Bill’s New Frock’.

“We wrote a summary of chapter 4 and the theme was anger. It was the longest summary I’ve ever done!” – Chelsy

Hyphens

The Hyphens are on chapter 10 of ‘Charlotte’s Web’!

“The theme of my summary was friendship and saving lives, Avery has a frog that she cared about . At the end of chapter 10, a boy who was trying to attack Charlotte fell into a rotten goose egg. It stank the barn out and he went away so this saved charlotte’s life.” – Devon

Our writing focus has been our new IDL topic ‘Natural Disasters’. Our star piece of writing this month has been our tornado explanation. Some examples of these explanations are shown below!

Dionne’s paragraph on the Fujita Scale.
An extract from Jay’s explanation describing Tornado Alley.
Liam’s explanation of how tornadoes form.

Our Literacy target for next month is related to our spelling. We are going to start dictating short paragraphs to our partners during our Friday spelling quiz to add more CHALLENGE!

Numeracy

This month we have been working on multiplication, division and problem solving strategies. Our target was to recall our times tables accurately. We are becoming much quicker at recalling our tables facts accurately. This has allowed us to improve when using our number talks strategies to multiply and divide. Some of our numeracy highlights this month are shown below;

Number Talks – We created our own strategy! Parts worked so well for multiplying that we decided to try it out for division too! It works!

Health and Wellbeing

This month we achieved our target of getting our lunch time clubs up and running to help younger children keep active in the yard. Primary 7 love being junior sports leaders as we develop coaching skills as we play.

We have been focussing on how we learn and target setting using our target plates. Many of our plates are turning green as we achieve more of our targets each week.

Before the October holidays we took part in HEALTH WEEK and it was fantastic fun! Here are some of our health week highlights!

Our Health and Wellbeing target for next month is to learn each event in Sportshall Athletics before our class trip to the Ravenscraig to compete on the 3rd of December.

Science

This month in Science we have been investigating Space, Comets, Meteors and their impact. We carried out an investigation to identify the relationship between the size of a meteor and the diameter/depth of its crater!

Watch the video below to see Tom, Dionne, Josh, Siobhan, Billie Rhys, Logan and Jack carry out their investigation!
