January – Morning Session

Welcome to the January edition of the nursery blog.

The children showed such a great interest in animals during our Autumn context so we decided that, along with the recent snowy and icy weather, it would be a great opportunity to learn all about the Polar Regions and the animals that live in these places.

Through SHANARRI the children have been learning all about being HEALTHY.  So far we have focused on different food that is healthy and unhealthy.  The children have enjoyed tasting different fruit and making fruit kebabs.

The focus for maths has been on counting on and back using the number line, recognising numbers to 10/20 and using one to one correspondence to give an amount of objects.

The children have been using the iPads, the Smartboard and books to find information all about different animals that live in the Polar Regions.  They have been drawing these animals and recalling different facts about them.

They had great fun in the snow!  We experimented with coloured water, played on sledges and made snowmen.

We will continue our Polar Regions context for the next few weeks and plan on learning all about the Gruffalo next!

October – morning session

Welcome to our October blog.  We have had a fantastic month in nursery.

We continued our learning of traditional tales and finished the context with Little Red Riding Hood.  This was definitely one of the children’s favourite stories, they loved the songs and re-enacting the story.  We enjoyed a picnic in the nursery to celebrate the end of the context.

Many thanks to all the parents who sent in context evaluations!

‘The start is Little Red Riding Hood puts her coat on and mum says ‘Don’t go in the woods!’  They all lived happily ever after.’  Karson

‘The woodcutter is a character in the story.’  Greg

‘The woodcutter comes at the end and he cuts the wolf.  Then granny pops out!’  Holly

‘Little Red Riding Hood was going to visit her grandma.  The wolf was sneaking at the door.’ Tyler

‘Wolf ate granny.’ Jaimi

‘I was the wolf.  I said ‘Come in.’  The granny was in the cupboard, she got locked in.’ Derry

We celebrated Greg’s birthday…

And welcomed our new start, Mason.

The children were brilliant at our obstacle course!

We are now going to be learning all about Autumn and have so far enjoyed a walk in the woods, painting and lots of talking, listening and sharing our ideas about Autumn.

Our focus for maths, literacy and health and wellbeing for this context are:

Maths – to create a simple pattern.

Literacy – to find information from a variety of sources.

Health and Wellbeing – to explore, prepare and taste a variety of foods.

‘I saw a squirrel behind the tress.  It didn’t move.’ Lexie

‘It was cold.  I saw spotty leaves.’ Maya

We had a fantastic time at our Halloween party!

November – Morning Session

Welcome to the November issue of the Berryhill Nursery blog!

We have had a fantastic month in nursery.  We have been learning all about Autumn and, through this context, have been exploring and investigating pattern, enjoying the great outdoors, finding information in different ways and learning all about nocturnal animals as well as much, much more!

The children have been enjoying the ABC Music programme, exploring the instruments and playing along to different music as well as learning about rhythm and timing.

The children have been very interested in different nocturnal animals, especially hedgehogs, and have enjoyed using the iPads to find information and watch videos about these creatures.

As well as learning new vocabulary associated with nocturnal animals…

And making chocolate hedgehog cupcakes…

They have also enjoyed different art experiences such as Owl Babies inspired art and clay hedgehogs.

“A mum flies away and the babies sit on the branch together.  Mum comes back and she says ‘WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?'” Kacie

“Hedgehogs have five thousand spikes on their back and they sniff for food.” Karson

“The roll in a wee ball.  They sleep and hibernate in the winter.” Derry

“They curl up in a wee ball.  They look for food at dark time.” Maya

They have also been practising their nursery rhymes for our competition.

The children have also been investigating and exploring patterns in different areas of the nursery.

Through SID and SHANARRI the children have been learning all about keeping SAFE.  Please look out for our new SHANARRI wall in the cloakroom, coming soon!

“My mum and dad keep me safe when I’m at home.” Hollie

Finally, the children have enjoyed many outdoor experiences this month.  They have been playing in our own outdoor spaces but also have enjoyed a trip to Belhaven Park.

We are currently preparing for our Nursery Nativity which is on Thursday 14th November.

During December the children will be learning all about the Nativity story.

Morning Session – Nursery Class

It has been a pleasure welcoming our returning children and all of our new starts to Berryhill Nursery.

Throughout September the children have been learning all about traditional tales, in particular, The Gingerbread Man, The Enormous Turnip and (still to come) Little Red Riding Hood.  The focus has been on introducing the children to new vocabulary such as ‘enormous’, ‘budge’, ‘scampered’ and ‘sly’,  allowing the children to re-enact the stories in different ways, counting and learning all about positional language such as in front of, behind, first, second, third.  In the gym hall the children have been learning about being in their own space, controlling their bodies and learning some new ball skills.  They have also been sharing their thoughts about the stories through art – please see our fabulous displays!

In addition, the children have been to Tesco to buy turnips, made turnip soup, made gingerbread men and baked cupcakes.

Here is what the children have to say about their learning this month…

‘The turnip wouldn’t budge, it was on the ground.  The man started to pull, then the lady, then the boy, then the girl, then the cat and dog and the bird and the turnip popped out and they ate it for supper and dinner for a long time and then the farmer said he would plant carrots next time.’  Tyler Richardson

‘Enormous means it’s really, really, really big.  The man came first, the lady came second, the boy came third, the girl came fourth, the dog fifth.  The mouse came and they all fell over.  The turnip popped out and at the end they ate the turnip for breakfast, lunch and dinner for weeks!’ Lisa Carson

‘The fox was eating the gingerbread man and he fell in his mouth.  The fox went ‘SNAP!’  I liked making the gingerbread men.’  Lexie Bogle

‘He ran away from the horse, the farmer, a cow, an old woman, an old man because he didn’t want to get ate.’ Karson Fox

‘We went to Tesco on a bus.  We got two turnips.  We put them in the trolley.’  Derry Rattray

‘I went to Tesco with Mrs Murray.  I bought a turnip, carrots and potatoes.’  Kacie Price

‘I was holding the enormous turnip at Tesco.  We got a wee drink at the café.  We brought the turnip back and made soup.’  Brody Nimmo

‘I made cupcakes.  I put flour, eggs and butter in a bowl.’  Karson Fox
