Primary 2 – January Learning Blog

Hello!

Welcome to Primary 2’s January Learning Blog! This month we have have been reflecting on our progress so far, and have been setting goals we hope to achieve in the coming year!  We hope you enjoy hearing all about our busy month!

Literacy

In Room 3 we have been learning about some of the traditional ways we celebrate the start of a new year in Scotland. One of the ways we mark the beginning of the new year is through thinking about our New Year’s Resolution. During Taught Writing, we took the time to reflect on our highlights of last year, and share our New Year’s Resolutions.

This month, we have been learning about Scottish culture and some of our famous myths and legends. Our favourite myths were about the Loch Ness Monster and the Kelpies.

We used our knowledge of Scottish myths to write our own stories, featuring many mysterious creatures. We loved sharing our ideas and creating our own spooky tales.

This month we have been working on new and exciting ways to learn our phoneme and common words. We can now use our new spelling challenge cards to practise our spelling words in lots of interesting ways!

Next month we will focus on our using our phoneme story to help us learn lots of new words containing our phoneme. We will focus on the explanation genre of writing.

Maths

This month in maths we have been revising our addition and subtraction strategies. We love using lots of different methods to support us with our addition and subtraction, such as cubes, the 100 square and the number line.

We have also been developing our mental maths skills by using our Number Talks strategies. We love to find the best strategy to complete the calculation and sharing our ideas. We know that its not about finding the correct answer, but its about finding the best strategy as a team. Next month we will be focusing on our money topic.

Health and Wellbeing

This month, as part of the ‘Proud to be Me!’ programme, we have been learning about what makes us all unique. We have been discussing some of the differences between boys and girls and the importance of respecting everyone for who they are. We all drew a person called Sam. We could decide if Sam was a boy or a girl and show what made them special.

This month, we got the chance to have some fun in the snow! We worked together to build a Room 3 snowman and enjoyed playing together outdoors.

This month we have been thinking about Road Safety. We have discussed the importance of staying safe while walking on the pavement and have learned all about the rules of the Green Cross Code. We even created our own Road Safety posters to remind drivers to keep their speed down when travelling in busy areas. Our slogan was ‘Slow Down, Save Lives’!

Next month, we will be focusing on how we can develop a Growth Mindset.

Thank you!

Thank you for visiting the Primary 2 January Learning Blog!  We hope you come back next month to see how busy we have been!

Learning Blog – Primary 7

January

Literacy

This month in literacy, primary 7 have been studying Non-Fiction texts.

We have been learning about the Second World War and primary and secondary sources.

Mrs Hannah even brought us in some real primary sources, from the time of the War. We loved reading the letters and looking at the ration book she gave us.

We have been thinking about the validity of sources too:

“ A reliable source would be goggle box because people write it for schools “ – Devon

“ Wikipedia wouldn’t be a reliable source because anybody can go in and change information by making a wikipedia account “ – Gemma

Rabbie Burns

This week we have been writing some scots poetry as we celebrated the life of Rabbie Burns.

We studied his famous poem ‘Address to a Haggis’ and wrote our own versions entitled ‘Address to a Teacake’.

We loved getting creative with the Scots language.

“The best type of taught writing is the type where you get to eat chocolate” – Joe

We achieved our target of editing and improving work. Some examples of our edited and published poems can be found below.

**Our literacy target for next month is to record ourselves reading and use these recordings to improve our fluency and expression.**

Numeracy

This month we have been learning about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

We have enjoyed making progress when working independently and using our fractions knowledge to solve problems.

We had to make a paper model then find a fraction of it.

Number Talks

We have started to re-visit every number talks strategy and have been solving problems without using our whiteboard. At the start it was tricky but we are improving every week!

So far we can solve addition and subtraction problems using the number talks strategies in our head!

**Our numeracy target for next month is to be more confident when working with 3D objects and their nets.**

Health and Wellbeing

This month we have started to learn about Gymnastics in P.E. We have also been doing a 30 minute circuits session every week to improve our fitness.

So far we have covered matching and mirroring and simple routines.

We are all becoming much more confident and are looking forward to learning handstands, rolls and using these skills on apparatus.

We have also started learning about World War 2 through Y Dance! We love working with Jessica every Thursday! Check out some of our moves below.

**Our  target for next month is to set and achieve fitness goals during circuits in P.E. **

We have also been working on some winter poetry! We included visual language, metaphors and similes and re-drafted our poems in our own way!

Related imageOur Literacy target for January is to be able to explain the validity and reliability of non-fiction sources.

Numeracy

This month we have been working really hard on money! We have really enjoyed this concept as we have linked it to Our Enterprise is the Business! We practised our money skills in a real life context by budgeting to buy our materials, giving change on the stall and calculating our profit!!

We made £73 profit!!!!

Our Money knowledge wasn’t the only learning we applied during Enterprise! We had to measure the ingredients to create our Tasty Trees and create the cone molds by making the net of a cone and assembling it!

Related imageOur Numeracy target for January is to create and identify a range of fractions and link then to their decimal and percentage equivalents.

Health and Wellbeing

At the start of December we went to Ravenscraig to compete against many other schools in Athletics! We had a great time and got to use all of the skills we have been learning in P.E. for each of the different events!

Primary 2 – December Learning Blog

Hello!

Welcome to Primary 2’s December Learning Blog! This month we have had lots of festive fun in Room 3. We have made the most of this happy time of year by taking part in lots of exciting activities and outings! We hope you enjoy hearing all about our busy month!

Literacy

In Room 3 we have been working on writing a clear and well organised set of instructions. We used bullet-points to make our instructions very easy for the reader to follow. We decided to tell our reader how to make our Reindeer Hot Chocolate Cones. We wanted to share our experience of making the Reindeer Cones with other boys and girls who might like to sell them at their Christmas Fayre.

We used our writing skills to write a letter to Santa. We asked Santa lots of questions about the elves and Mrs Claus. We also asked him to bring us some presents on Christmas Eve! Lily asked Santa for a play kitchen and Richard asked for a horse! We have been very good this year so we are all hoping we are on the Nice List!

This month we have been developing our reading skills and have been working on becoming more confident in our reading tasks. We have been focusing on our Text Detective and Beginning, Middle and End tasks. We know that when we are summarising a text, we only need to tell the reader the most important parts of the story! Next term, we will be focusing on the Find It, Prove It, Talk About It reading task and  story writing.

Maths

This month in maths we have continued to work on our numbers up to 50 and we are now more confident with numbers up to 100. We love to use our 100 Square to support us with the concept of place value.

We have also been working on the concept of symmetry. We have been using our knowledge of the line of symmetry to draw the other half of a festive picture. The snowman and the gingerbread man were our favourites! Next term, we will focus on addition and subtraction and fractions.

Health and Well being

The festive period has provided many valuable and exciting learning experiences. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Motherwell Civic Centre to see the pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. Our favourite character was Silly Billy because he made us laugh.

We had the opportunity to form our own business, which we decided to call ‘The Rockin’ Rudolph Reindeer Team’. We made Hot Chocolate Reindeer Cones to sell at our Christmas Fayre. Our Reindeer Cones were a massive hit and sold out very quickly!

This year Room 3 took part in the Christmas Nativity. We were part of the Primary 2 Choir and put in lots of effort and enthusiasm when learning all the songs and actions. On the day of the performance we did an amazing job on stage in front of all the ladies, gentlemen and children in the hall.

Just when we thought we couldn’t pack any more fun into this month, it was time for our Christmas Party. We joined together with our friends in Room 1 and 2 to get into the Christmas spirit and enjoyed dancing, party games and some delicious treats! Next term, we will focus on Road Safety.

Thank you!

Thank you for visiting the Primary 2 December Learning Blog and for all your support this year! We hope you have a great Christmas filled with love and laughter! We look forward to coming back to school next year for a new term of wonderful learning experiences!

Primary 2 – November Learning Blog

Hello!

Welcome to Primary 2’s November Learning Blog! This month we have had so much fun in Room 3. We have taken part in lots of activities which have guided our learning and developed our skills. We hope you enjoy hearing all about our busy month!

Literacy

This month in literacy we have all been working very hard on our new phonemes. We are now much more confident when using our Five Finger Strategy to support our spelling. We enjoy using our magnetic boards and working with a partner to develop our spelling knowledge.

In literacy we have been exploring the use of onomatopoeia to make our writing pop! When writing a story about Fireworks night, it was the perfect opportunity to use some fantastic vocabulary to bring our description of the fireworks to life!

Next month, we will be working on personal writing and will continue to use our magnetic boards and spelling strategies to help us to be more confident spellers.

Maths

This month in maths we have been working on our numbers up to 50 and we are now thinking about numbers up to 100. To become more confident with our numbers we have been using our 100 square and number arrows.

In Room 3, we continued our work on 3D shape. We enjoyed creating 3D shape patterns, building with 3D shapes and making lots of 3D shapes out of playdough.

We have been enjoying our work on the concept of probability and chance. We have been participating in lots of discussion of different scenarios and how likely they may be to happen. We have had lots of laughs coming up with our own impossible scenarios and sharing them with each other. Next month, we will continue to work on our numbers up to 100 and the concept of place value.

Health and Well being

In Room 3 this month, we have celebrated Anti-Bullying Week. We have focused on what to do if you see someone being bullied and who to go to for help if you experience bullying. We used all of our knowledge to create our Talk Talk board. In Room 3, we want be as kind and supportive as Buddy the Elf. The message we wanted to share was, ‘Be a Buddy, not a Bully!’ Our board was full of positive phrases that Buddy might say to anyone who was feeling low or being bullied.

Thank you!

Thanks you for visiting the Primary 2 November Learning Blog! Please come back next month to see how busy we have been!

Primary 7 November Blog

Literacy

This month we have been loving our new novels! We’re almost finished them already! We have started using more digital technology in our literacy lessons. This means we can do fast finisher and extension tasks online when we finish our work. Examples of each group’s digital literacy work can be seen below!! We have also been collaborating to create group dictionaries and chapter cards as we read our novels.

This month we have been focusing on Narrative and Persuasive writing. We have also completed 2 re-drafts to practise our editing and improving skills.

We have been completing weekly dictated paragraphs to challenge us with our spelling words, many of us are now achieving 100% on our weekly spelling Quiz!!

Our Literacy target for next month is linked to editing and improving writing. We will post some of our word processed letters in our next blog!

Numeracy

This month we started by completing our Multiplication and Division assessment on Sumdog!

Every single child in the class improved overall and many achieved over 90%! This is fantastic and proves that hard work and maximum effort pay off!

We now know all of our Number Talks strategies – we start each numeracy lesson by choosing an operation with a class vote. We can then use any strategy of our choice!!

We then moved on to time, starting off by making our own clocks to help us calculate time durations!

As well as 24hr time, durations, timetables and converting time, we have been applying our time skills in P.E. by timing ourselves carrying out various events in Sportshall Athletics.

Our numeracy target for next month is to apply our money knowledge in a range of contexts. We will be part of the finance team calculating profit and loss for the Christmas fayre. We will also work at the Christmas fayre helping the younger classes give change.

Health and Wellbeing

This month we achieved our target of learning to compete in each of the Sportshall athletics events. We have practised long jump, triple jump, speed bounce, balance beam, aiming and shuttle runs with hurdles! We also did some circuits to improve our fitness ahead of the Sportshall Athletics Festival at Ravenscraig on Fri 1st December!

At the beginning of November, Daryl from ‘Tree of Knowledge’ visited us to deliver a fantastic workshop on growth mindset and self-motivation. We worked on a range of teambuilding activities which needed resilience and determination!

Our health and wellbeing target for next month is to review our target plates and create new Literacy and Numeracy targets for the new year!

Expressive Arts

This month we have been experimenting with brush strokes to create texture! We loved splattering paint to create the lava on our volcanoes……we did not love cleaning up afterwards!!!!!

Our finished volcanoes look so effective!! You can see them displayed outside Room 14!

At the beginning of November we visited Sky Academy!!

BEST TRIP EVER!!!!!

We split into teams and produced our own news report on natural disasters! the finished advert is on the USB wristband each P7 got to take home. If you haven’t seen it already, it really is worth a watch!

THANK YOU FOR READING OUR NOVEMBER BLOG!! COME BACK NEXT MONTH FOR OUR CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!!

Primary 2 – October Learning Blog

Hello!

Welcome to Primary 2 October Learning Blog! We are going to showcase all the wonderful learning experiences we have been part of this month. We managed to fit in a lot of fun too!

Literacy

This month in literacy we have been focusing on non-fiction and have been using lots of sources to gather interesting facts about sea creatures. We used all the facts that we found to write fantastic information reports about our chosen sea creature.

In Room 3 we are making good progress through our sounds. We love working with a partner to build our spelling knowledge. We use our magnetic boards to help us say, make/break, blend, read and write each of our phoneme words. Next month, we will be working on instructional writing and will continue to use our magnetic boards to help us to be more confident spellers.

Maths

This month in maths we have continued to work on our numbers up to 50 and we are much more confident with them. We have also been  working on ordering numbers, from biggest to smallest, for example.

We have been working hard to become more familiar with different 2D and 3D shapes. We enjoyed hunting for shapes in the sand, creating shape collages in the creative area and making lots of shapes out of playdough.

We always enjoy improving our accuracy on Sumdog and challenging ourselves to unlock new games. We like working with a partner during Number Talks and sharing our addition and subtraction strategies with the class. Next month, we will start work on estimating and rounding.

Health and Wellbeing

This month we had the chance to take part in many exciting activities during health week. We were able to practice our cycling skills during Balancability and we had so much fun playing with our friends in our Sumo Suits. We got to meet Ziggy and the Junior Road Safety Officers to learn some tips to keep us safe on the roads.

We made a fruit salad full of nutritious and delicious fruit that we all had a chance to prepare. We talked about our favourite fruit and how fruit gives us important vitamins which keep us healthy. Our fruit salad was so tasty some class members even had seconds!

Next month in health and wellbeing we will be focusing on hygiene and germs.
