Room 14 – October Learning Blog!

Literacy

This month in Literacy primary 7 have definitely achieved their target of working more independently.  Each group have been working on their own individual novel applying their comprehension strategies.

Commas

The commas have reached Chapter 6 of Kensuke’s Kingdom and started making huge versions of the book’s characters this week. Look out for our finished character learning wall in our next blog!

Full Stops

The full stops are on chapter 4 of their Novel ‘Bill’s New Frock’.

“We wrote a summary of chapter 4 and the theme was anger. It was the longest summary I’ve ever done!” – Chelsy

Hyphens

The Hyphens are on chapter 10 of ‘Charlotte’s Web’!

“The theme of my summary was friendship and saving lives, Avery has a frog that she cared about . At the end of chapter 10, a boy who was trying to attack Charlotte fell into a rotten goose egg. It stank the barn out and he went away so this saved charlotte’s life.” – Devon

Our writing focus has been our new IDL topic ‘Natural Disasters’. Our star piece of writing this month has been our tornado explanation. Some examples of these explanations are shown below!

Dionne’s paragraph on the Fujita Scale.
An extract from Jay’s explanation describing Tornado Alley.
Liam’s explanation of how tornadoes form.

Our Literacy target for next month is related to our spelling. We are going to start dictating short paragraphs to our partners during our Friday spelling quiz to add more CHALLENGE!

Numeracy

This month we have been working on multiplication, division and problem solving strategies. Our target was to recall our times tables accurately. We are becoming much quicker at recalling our tables facts accurately. This has allowed us to improve when using our number talks strategies to multiply and divide. Some of our numeracy highlights this month are shown below;

Number Talks – We created our own strategy! Parts worked so well for multiplying that we decided to try it out for division too! It works!

MacKenzie leading a Number Talk – explaining how he mentally divided a 4-digit number by 1 digit.
MacKenzie split his dividend into parts to help him find the answer!
An example of how we find and fix mistakes during Number Talks – P7 have a Growth Mindset!

Do you want to learn how to use the Parts division strategy? Watch our information video below – created by Liam, Dionne and Gemma!

Our numeracy target for next month is to carry out mental and written calculations with amounts of money as we prepare for enterprise in December.

Health and Wellbeing

This month we achieved our target of getting our lunch time clubs up and running to help younger children keep active in the yard. Primary 7 love being junior sports leaders as we develop coaching skills as we play.

We have been focussing on how we learn and target setting using our target plates. Many of our plates are turning green as we achieve more of our targets each week.

Before the October holidays we took part in HEALTH WEEK and it was fantastic fun! Here are some of our health week highlights!

Our Health and Wellbeing target for next month is to learn each event in Sportshall Athletics before our class trip to the Ravenscraig to compete on the 3rd of December.

Science

This month in Science we have been investigating Space, Comets, Meteors and their impact. We carried out an investigation to identify the relationship between the size of a meteor and the diameter/depth of its crater!

Watch the video below to see Tom, Dionne, Josh, Siobhan, Billie Rhys, Logan and Jack carry out their investigation!

Primary 2 – September Learning

Literacy

In Room 3, we have been learning all about The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson. We have enjoyed exploring the book and it’s characters, through descriptive writing and fun activities. We have learnt a Gruffalo song and even made up a Gruffalo dance. We also went on an outdoor adventure to search for creatures which might live in the deep, dark woods.

We have been making good progress through our phonemes. We enjoy using different and fun ways to learn our sounds. We love writing them using materials such as, chalk and glitter.

Maths

In Room 3, we have been working hard to master concepts, such as place value and addition/subtraction.

To help us with our addition and subtraction we have been using one of our Number Talks strategies – the number line. Room 3 enjoy using their frog leaps to complete tricky calculations.

We have been using Sumdog to improve our mental maths skills. We like competing as a class to unlock new games and earning a new pet.

Health and Wellbeing

In Room 3, we have settled in well and have enjoyed building new friendships. We have enjoyed learning about Tiddler, the little fish who tells tall tales. Tiddler has helped us think about some of the consequences of telling tall tales and how that can affect our relationships with others.

During P.E., we have been focusing on Football. We have been working on important skills which we can use during our game, such as ball control and passing accurately.

Room 14 – September Learning Blog

Literacy

This month in Literacy primary 7 have been very busy. We have started working in our new spelling groups, read our modelling novel ‘The Butterfly Lion’ and have written reports on Scotland and Africa!

We loved our first P7 novel, some feedback included;

“I love books about animals, I would like to read more books by Michael Morpurgo” – Devon

“I would only change the part where the white lion died to the white lion staying alive.” – Scott

“…the best bit was when Bertie came back from the army and found the lion. I would not change anything.” – Kayla-Louise

Our Literacy target for next month is to work more independently as we move on to our group novels!

Full Stops – Bill’s New Frock

Commas – Kensuke’s Kingdom

Hyphens – Charlotte’s Web

Numeracy

So far, Rm. 14 have made great progress through their Numeracy concepts!! We’ve already learned about place value, addition and subtraction!

Below are some of our favourite numeracy moments from the past month;

The magic Number – We have been using the magic number game to decrease, increase and round large numbers. It helps us revise our place value knowledge!

Sumdog – Primary 7 love using Sumdog every Tuesday afternoon and any other day when we’ve finished our work. Our Sumdog Stars this month are Siobhan, Marc and Kevin for most questions answered correctly. Well Done!

Tables Pong – Playing tables pong helps us learn our times table facts. Plus, it’s so much fun we forget we’re revising tables!

Numeracy Open Afternoon – Our numeracy open afternoon was a great success, we loved showing our parents and carers who visited what we do during numeracy time. We even got to tech them some place value and try challenge them with addition and subtraction.

Number Talks – Number Talks is now a part of daily life in P7. We are becoming skilled in using mental strategies to solve problems and really enjoy encouraging and challenging each other when we share answers.

Next month we will be learning about Multiplication and Division! Our target is to be able to recall all of our tables accurately by the start of November.

Health and Wellbeing

During our health and wellbeing time, we have been learning about our ‘personal network’. We know where and when to seek support depending on how we feel.

In P.E. we have completed a sports leaders course with David Kennedy from active schools. We loved becoming Junior Leaders and delivering our lessons to our peers.

Our target for Health and Wellbeing is to set up and run our junior leaders clubs for the infant children to enjoy at lunch time.

Vulnerable Road User Campaign: 19 to 25 June 2017

Vulnerable Road User Campaign: 19 to 25 June 2017

Between Monday 19th and Sunday 25th June, in conjunction with our Roads Policing colleagues, Lanarkshire Division will be engaging with the public to educate, enforce and positively influence road user behaviour.

There will be various strands to the campaign which will include:

  • educating children and young people walking and cycling on roads
  • motorcycle safety
  • speeding
  • inconsiderate driving behaviours

Our aim is to reduce road incidents.  As such, we wish to engage with as many people as possible.  Working with our community planning partners, we would like to cascade the message and encourage children, young people and adults alike to take responsibility for their own safety and to be mindful of the hazards walking and cycling on the roads present.

You can find out more about what we’re up to on Facebook and Twitter using the hash tag #GoSafeRoadSafe.

With your help, we can reduce the number of children, young people and families affected by road collisions.  A Scotland where no one is seriously hurt or killed on the roads is our ambition.

Our partners at www.roadsafetyscotland.org.uk and www.cyclingscotland.org are excellent sources of information and resource.

Over the week, our local problem solving team officers will be liaising with local schools and delivering appropriate advice to staff, pupils and parents alike.

Lanarkshire Division appreciates the assistance the local authority gives as a partner to keep people safe in North Lanarkshire
