Silver Medal

Huge congratulations to Chloe who achieved a Silver Medal last weekend at the IFAA World Indoor Archery Championships 2023.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Good morning, you may or may not be aware that today is Holocaust memorial day and the 78th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz by the Soviet Army.  The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day this year is “ordinary people”.  Ordinary people as victims, perpetrators, and bystanders.

Recently two of our students, Holly and Aidan, were given the opportunity to to speak to MSPs during the Time for Reflection session at the Scottish Parliament. They were able to share their experiences of Lessons from Auschwitz Project which they’ve participated in this year, including visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland, and to reflect on why it’s important to commemorate and remember the Holocaust.
As part of the Next Steps stage of this project Holly and Aidan will also be sharing their experiences and what they learned with the school community by presenting to classes within the Humanities Faculty over the coming weeks.

International Cookbook

Happy New Year everyone!

The Equality’s Committee and the Home Economics department are joining forces to produce Cumbernauld Academy’s very own International Cookbook and we would like to invite all parents, carers, and family members to contribute a recipe. It can be anything – a favourite dish you cook for a special occasion or something you rustle up when time is tight and there’s nothing in the fridge: starter, main course or dessert.

This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the diverse ethnicities of staff and pupils within the school and bring us all together as one school community through food.

We look forward to receiving your recipes via email: nlalig@northlan.org.uk The deadline for submissions is the 1st March 2023.

Thank you in advance,

Team Equality

St Lucy’s Youth Zone

Ty McPhee – A young actor who bravely spoke out against bullying after posting a very moving Instagram video to address bullying and help others who may be suffering in silence.

Paula McGuire – Author, motivational speaker and life coach, Paula McGuire is the world’s least likely adventurer with the world’s most inspiring adventure story. Since transforming from anxious recluse to double TEDx speaker, presenter and columnist, Paula now specialises in supporting others to find their own adventures and live their best lives.

Callum Hutchison – in his own words “I’m a professional with lived experience of navigating the criminal justice system. I have experienced trauma throughout my early life. I know first-hand how difficult it can be to overcome trauma. Since a life changing intervention was done with myself I have gone on to become a mentor and a development officer with the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit supporting people with convictions to a more positive destination. Developing interventions and exit ramps for those caught up in a cycle of offending. Also raising awareness of trauma informed practice to help services better support those we serve.”

Craig Mathieson – who established the Polar Academy charity in 2013, taking young adults from a variety of backgrounds and inspiring them through participation in Arctic expeditions. The young adults Mathieson targets for his expeditions are not those who fit the profile of the extreme high achievers or the other extreme, for which there is an abundance of initiatives already in existence. Rather, Mathieson aims to help the average young adult who struggles through life, surviving without recognition, and without ever truly realizing their full potential.

Angela Jarvis – Angela’s daughter Abbie was the victim of a very serious assault in October and wants to share her daughter’s story with others in the hope that there can be a change in the way our children and young people treat one another.
