Mr David Ramage, one of the Braidhurst High School chaplains, led this year’s Easter Service with a wide range of inputs from staff and pupils. Mr Ramage and the Rector, Mr Hannan were piped into the packed assembly hall by sixth year pupil Samuel Biggart. The service started with Chloe Elrick singing “How long will I love You” followed by a video insert based upon John chapter 3 verse 16. Dayle Archibald then performed “Voice from the Cross Barabbas” followed by Hannah Allan singing “I will wait”. The bible lesson read by Samuel Biggart was from Luke chapter 23 and drama teacher Ms Hughes then performed “Voices from the Cross Soldier”. This was then followed by a video insert “Crucified” and thereafter drama teacher Mrs Reilly performed “Voices from the Cross – The woman who anointed Jesus”. Mr Ramage then delivered his Easter comments based upon the theme of ‘Forgiveness’. Support for Learning teacher Mr Clark then sang “When I survey”. The assembly then heard various thanks and messages from Mr Hannan prior to him leading the assembly in prayer. Mr Hannan commented “This was yet another superb Easter service very well led by Mr David Ramage with excellent inputs from staff and pupils. The behaviour throughout was exemplary”.

LES OEUFS DE PAQUES
The Modern Languages Department held its annual Easter Egg competition and pupils were asked to decorate an egg on a European theme. The response was excellent and it was difficult to choose winners.
First prize was awarded to 1A pupils Safar, Aiden, John and Louis who produced a football pitch with eggs as players. Second prize went to Kaitlyn of 2R for a French guillotine complete with an egg for a head, and third prize was awarded to Shah of 2L for his ‘Arc de Triomphe’. Mrs Martin, the Science Technician also deserves a special mention for entering an array of unusual and impressive eggs, labelled in perfect French and German.
AUF WIEDERSEHEN ANJA!
The Modern Languages Department bade a sad farewell to their German assistant Miss Anja Woike last week. Anja had worked in the school for six months and during her time at Braidhurst, Anja was involved in a wide range of activities with the pupils and proved to be a very valuable and respected member of the department. She worked with National 4, National 5 and Higher German pupils, as well as assisting with the S2 German introductory sessions, PSE classes and Higher Geography students, as Anja studied Geography at university in Mainz in Germany. She now returns to Dusseldorf in Germany but she has assured the department that she will return to Scotland in the very near future, as she will miss the beautiful scenery and the Scottish hospitality. It goes without saying that members of the department intend visiting Anja in Germany too!
VISIT TO COMMUNITY CAFÉ
Recently HUB pupils visited the community care – open on Tuesdays from 11 am till 2 pm in North Motherwell Parish Church. All the volunteer staff at the café made them very welcome – the young people said that they felt at home as soon as they walked in. They enjoyed a roll and sausage and want to go back to sample the lemon curd cake and the fruit scones – all home made by café staff. They were chuffed to find out that only Fair Trade tea and coffee are sold and that all the goodies are really affordable. In the words of one pupil, the café is “right good” and “it should be open every day”.

World Youth Netball Championships 2013
On Thursday 22 August, the World Youth Netball Championships 2013 came to Glasgow. This major sporting event involved the top twenty-two countries in the world competing to become the overall winning team. Braidhurst High School’s netball team observed the opening ceremony that would begin eleven days of fast, exciting and fiercely competitive netball.
The opening ceremony was full of cultural entertainment including traditional Scottish dancing and music which welcomed the spectators and the other many countries from around the globe. Girls from Braidhurst witnessed the spectacular opening match between the hosts of the games, Scotland against the Cayman Islands. The match offered an insight of the international standard of netball and proved to be inspirational to the girls. The game was fast and exciting and the Scottish Thistles made a strong start to the game and were able to secure the first win of the tournament. The final score stood at 73-23 and proved encouraging and promising for days to come. Overall, the opening ceremony was an inspiring experience for the team.
The S4 team members were privileged to be invited to be a part of Ball Patrol. Their job was to retrieve the ball when it went out of play. This was a very important job, as every second counted in the matches. It was a very valuable experience and a great opportunity for the girls to get a close up view of different techniques and valuable skills to take on board. The team executed this task well and are appreciative for this experience.
The whole Braidhurst netball team thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were very proud to be a part of the World Youth Netball Championships.
