World Book Day

Hi Guys!

World Book Day is all about celebrating our favourite books and encouraging each other to read for pleasure. There are so many reasons to read and today is all about reminding ourselves of why it is so important. So here are a few reasons we should all try to read more for pleasure:

  1. Mental Stimulation – in other words it is like a work out for our brains. To help keep them fit (just like our bodies).
  2. Stress Reduction – as it says, it helps to reduce stress and calm our minds.
  3. Knowledge – everything you read teaches you something new and you never know when that piece of knowledge might come in handy.
  4. Expand your vocabulary – the more you read, the more words you learn, the more words you can say and write. This can also help you to learn new languages.
  5. Memory Improvement – when you read a book you have to remember all the characters and story lines. This can help boost your memory skills.
  6. Critical Thinking Skills – have you ever read a book and worked out the mystery before you have finished the story? This is critical thinking.
  7. Better Focus and Concentration – reading helps you to sit still and focus on what you are doing. In today’s world it is very easy to switch from one thing to the next and everything is so fast paced. Reading makes you stop and focus.
  8. Better Writer – the more you read, the more you learn how to write a good story and how to structure a good story. This goes hand in hand with expanding your vocabulary.
  9. Teaches Empathy – being able to understand a character’s feelings in a book will help you to understand other people in the real world and have a good understanding of how they are feeling.
  10. Helps you live longer – some studies have shown that reading regularly could help you live longer than those who don’t tend to read very often.
The main reason I read is to relax and switch off. I love learning about different periods in history and how character’s felt at different points in their lives. I also enjoy reading books that I have already read years after I first read them.

Here is a page full of different activities and sheets that you can do for World Book Day. We will be having a call at 9.30am on Thursday to have a chat about them.
