Weekly Review 25/9/20

This week we have been learning about:

Ancient Egypt

We focussed on Pharaohs this week. We learned that there were some pharaohs who were very young when they became king (Thutmose III and Tutankhamun). We looked at their dates of birth and when they died. It was quite confusing because it seemed to go backwards. e.g. 3180-3120 BC. We now know it is because of BC. The first pharaoh was Narmer. He conquered the south of Egypt and made them a united country again.

Djoser was the first pharaoh to build a pyramid for his tomb.

Thutmose III grew the wealth and power of Egypt when he conquered Syria and along the Nile to Sudan. He build many stone temples and obelisks to commemorate his achievements. One of these can be found on The Embankment in London.

Akhenaten changed the capital city of Egypt and named it after himself. He also changed their religion, meaning there was only 1 God called Aton and he only spoke to the pharaoh, Akhenaten. There were no more other Gods and the temples were closed. Tutankhamun fixed this and returned everything back to normal after his father’s death. Akhenaten was never supposed to be pharaoh but his older brother died unexpectedly.

We also learned that Tutankhamun was made pharaoh at age 9 and died at age 18. He also married his half sister. Akhenaten was Tutankhamun’s dad.

Literacy

Handwriting – this week we decided to focus on some phase 4 tricky words. This lets us link our handwriting with practicing some of our common misspelled words.
Grammar – we met Mr Whoops this week and he shared some of his sentences with us. However we don’t think he paid much attention in school and had to fix his sentences for him. Here is a couple we had to fix.

Writing – we wrote a letter as Balthasar (a Wizard who was expelled from Wizard school) to Jodias, his friend. Primary 4s were thinking about why he was expelled in the first place and Primary 5s were thinking about what he has been up to since being expelled.
Spelling – we did our active spelling outside this week and made our words using nature.

The Witches

We read 2 chapters this week as a whole class. We used drama to act out the meeting with the Grand High Witch. Billy, Leo and Emily-Rose were subjected to the white hot sparks. They were “frizzled like a fritter, cooked like a carrot”. We learned all about her dastardly plan to rid Inkland (England) of children. We also learned the recipe for Formula 86 Delayed Action Mouse Maker. We worked out that The Grand High Witch is about the same height as Lucille and we compared the Grand High Witch with her mask on and mask off. We used the book to analyse the descriptions. She had a very weird accent and she couldn’t pronounce ‘w’.

Numeracy

We did some active, outdoor learning this week. We used nature to represent numbers that Mrs Munro gave us. We then shared these and talked about how we made them.

In our textbooks we have been doing:
Pi – Common Multiples
Percentage and Square Root – Addition and Subtraction facts
Infinity and Perpendicular – Ordering 3 and 4 digit numbers.

Other

As part of our outdoor learning we started to weave the willow, at the front and the back, back into shape. Due to lockdown we weren’t here to maintain it so we thought we would make a start. Mrs Robertson complimented us on our efforts so far.
We had a visit from Miss Johnstone on Thursday, she just came to check we were all working hard and keeping safe.
PAThS Kid this week was Sophie. This was really nice as she is new to our class and has never been PAThS kid before. She chose a hedgehog shape.

Mrs Robertson will be back next week and we are sooooo excited!
On Tuesday Gary Moore came into school and we did some picture orienteering in the playground. We used pictures to find different things around the playground then took a selfie as evidence.

We have been working on our targets all week for parents phone calls over the next 2 weeks. We hope to get these up on our target stars for next week.
We had our extra play on Friday that we earned in the dinner hall. We played football, basketball and with some tennis balls.
