The Smillie Room

Smillie Room Curriculum Planning

There is a strong relationship between early life experiences and how babies and young children develop cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically throughout their lives. The Early Years Framework states that:

‘It is during our very earliest years and even pre-birth that a large part of the pattern of our future adult life is set.’ (Scottish Government, 2008).

From August 2026, staff  will be using a new planning tool, developed by Inverclyde Council, for children aged 0-36 months which focuses on  developmental milestones  to plan for children’s individual needs as well as considering information from parents and children’s interests to support them as they grow and learn.

This is split into 3 areas as follows:

  • My Wellbeing
  • My Curiosity, Curiosity and Creativity
  • My Movement and Coordination

Our staff work in partnership with parents/carers, and any other agencies involved, to ensure a consistent, collaborative approach to the learning and development of our youngest children.

We believe that young children need to feel safe and secure before they are ready to learn and develop. Promoting a nurturing environment through building positive relationships and attachments is key to this.
