Collaborative Literacy: Literacy Through Play

Join us for our first ‘Literacy Through Play’ event for Primary practitioners which will kick off a series of Literacy focussed sessions providing the opportunity for FVWL colleagues to share good practice and build a collaborative network.

This session will cover the progression of teaching Literacy through a play-based pedagogy in Primary 1 and Primary 2. We will discuss what a typical week would look like within Literacy, covering both the formal teaching aspect as well as developing Literacy more informally through free play. We will also share a variety of documentation and assessment strategies that we have found to be effective within Literacy.

Collaborative Literacy: Early Years

We look forward to welcoming you to our third ‘Early Years Exchange’ event for Early Years practitioners in our series of Literacy focussed sessions providing the opportunity for FVWL colleagues to share good practice and build a collaborative network.
In this session we will hear from two colleagues on how they have helped develop Literacy through considering the impact of their role and working with families.

My role as EEL in promoting literacy in ELC -not the icing on the cake but part of the mix.
Through sharing my experience of my evolving role as EEL I plan to explore some of the commonly used words and phrases used to describe my role and discover what they actually mean in practical terms in the playroom and what impact they have in helping to develop children’s Literacy skills.

Literacy Together
Closing the literacy attainment gap through partnerships, supporting families through language workshops and rhyme time challenges. Working closely with Speech and language therapists to improve environments and educator’s understanding of how to support communication. Enabling connections that help all children reach their full potential.

FVWL RIC Easter School

Live lessons:

We are delighted that e-Sgoil and our Forth Valley and West Lothian Regional improvement Collaborative are offering an Easter programme of real-time, interactive webinars covering Nat 4 to Advanced Higher, for Scottish Senior Phase learners. The programme is not designed to deliver whole course content but will focus on key aspects of the subject(s) and hints and tips on how to be successful in assessments.

The programme which covers over 60 courses runs from 6th – 16th April and there will be three Live Webinars per course. Webinars are run through Microsoft Teams, accessible through GLOW logins, and will use a ‘flipped learning’ approach. This means that young people will have had access to high quality, online resources prior to attending each webinar.

Week 1: 6 – 9 April 2021

·         Start times are from 1.00pm -5.00pm each day.

·         Subject Webinars will take place on Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday e.g. English could be at 1.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday and Biology at 4.00pm on Wednesday and Friday.

Week 2: 12 – 15 April

·         e-Sgoil Easter study support webinars will be running as per the existing e-Sgoil evening webinar schedule. Additional webinars have been arranged to match week 1 provision.

Useful information

·         The focus for the webinars will be on helping pupils succeed in SQA assessments as part of the Alternative Certification Model.

·         Resources will be posted in the Webinar teams and they will either be SQA past papers or assessments as well as any relevant materials from West OS and the Supported Learning materials from the National e-Learning Offer.

Recorded lessons:

We are delighted to also be offering a range of recorded lessons on our FVWL RIC YouTube Channel which can be fully and freely accessed over Easter and beyond … This range of resources is continually evolving and will be added to as the session progresses.

For our Easter school we will have lessons for Senior Phase pupils designed to support them to succeed in National 5 and Higher SQA assessments. So far these include: Maths, English, Geography, History, Modern Studies, Classical Studies, Computing Science, Design Manufacture, Biology, Health and Food Technology.

We are also offering a range of Literacy and Numeracy lessons for BGE pupils. There will be over 50 lessons available initially and these will be added to as the session progresses.

Learners can also access a range of over 1500 high-quality short learning videos through West OS, which can be accessed through your GLOW launch pad.

Supporting Writing

Following the Stephen Graham webinars last year and the recent sessions about the West Lothian writing approach with Marion Cochrane, there is growing interest in “The Writing Bubble”. Collaborative Literacy: Early Years

In this session we will hear from two colleagues on how they have helped develop Literacy outdoors and build a culture promoting reading for enjoyment.
Literacy Outdoors: Reading areas are not all about cosy cushions, ivy and fairy lights. Sometimes they are repurposed tyres, swaying grass and a big dose of fresh air!
Building a Reading Culture: Developing children’s early literacy skills through play-based learning, combining practitioners’ knowledge and understanding with fun-filled family engagement.

Networks: Primary NQTs (Literacy) & English NQTs

We’re establishing two new networks. The first meetings will be on March 3rd from 4.00-5.00 for Primary NQTs (Literacy) and on March 4th from 4.00-5.00 for English NQTs.

The main aim of these networks is to create opportunities for collaboration, support and development of Literacy and English teaching. A whole range of activities will be on offer, some of which are suggested below:

  • engaging with Literacy and English colleagues from across FV & WL as well as our university and national partners;
  • participating in professional dialogue;
  • sharing good practice (with co-hosting opportunities);
  • gaining insight into RIC Literacy and English programmes.

However, there is scope for many more activities and this will very much depend on the needs and interests of network members. Don’t miss out!

Reciprocal Reading Webinar: 1/2/21

Following a request from one of the local authority education support officers, a “taster” session about Reciprocal Reading was held on 1/2/21. This session was attended by practitioners from our four local authorities.
