Fair Trade Update

We are delighted to share that we have been awarded a FairAware award from Fairtrade. This is the first of three awards that can be granted to schools in recognition of them taking action to learn about Fairtrade and its values.

Well done to Primary 3 and their AMAZING teachers who have worked hard to collate all our school evidence for the award. We look forward to continuing on our Fairtrade journey.

TRANSPORT SUPPORT TO SMITHYCROFT SECONDARY

MESSAGE FROM THE PARENT COUNCIL FOR PRIMARY 7 PARENTS

Dear Families,

For some time the walking distance to Smithycroft Secondary, for children transitioning there after Primary 7, has been a concern for families. The Parent Council, as part of one of their Grand Challenges, have been liaising with Glasgow City Council (GCC) regarding these concerns. In order for us to continue to do effectively we need to have as much information as possible. We recently asked all families to complete a short survey to provide us with the information that we need to allow us to continue discussion with GCC. So far only 17 families have completed the survey. Can we kindly ask that if you have not already completed the survey, you do so by the 11th of November 2024. An email link has been sent to all Primary 7 families today.

Additionally a number of families who have completed the survey, who may be eligible for free transport support from GCC, have not yet completed the online application form. If you think you may be eligible for transport support, primarily because you live more than 2.2 miles from the local catchment secondary school by the shortest suitable walking route, you must click on the link below to apply. The school or Parent Council cannot do this on your behalf.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS – IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Free School Meals

Lots of our families, who we believe are entitled to Free School Meals (FSM), have still not registered. As you will be aware all P1-5 pupils attending school in Scotland are entitled to free school meals.

For other pupils (P6-7), parent or carer must be in receipt of –

  • Universal credit and earning no more than £726 in the monthly assessment period before you apply.
  • CTC only with income under £18,725
  • CTC/WTC with income under £8,717
  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseeker’s allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Asylum support from the Home Office

If your child is in P1-5 and also eligible for free school meals due to low income, you should still apply for free school meals to make sure that you get the Scottish child payment bridging payment. We would also encourage parents/carers of pupils in P6-7 to apply if you think you meet the criteria above.

Please visit the website for further information and to apply. If you require any assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at the school.

HOUSE POINTS – TERM 1 WINNERS

We are delighted to announce that Ben More were our winning house in Term 1 and have earned themselves a super house prize. They achieved this by working together to earn the most house points across Term 1. On Friday 15th November, from 1.30-2.30pm, all children in Ben More will be involved in an afternoon of exciting outdoor activities hosted by the wonderful Donald from Wildside Nature. The afternoon will include the toasting of marshmallows, funs games and hot chocolate. Each child can bring one adult family member along with them to share in this experience. We kindly ask that children come to school dressed for outdoor learning on this day. Given the unpredictable Scottish weather we advise that a waterproof jacket, appropriate outdoor shoes, a hat and gloves are worn. Well done Ben More. We look forward to celebrating with you soon!
