New Creative Conversations Edinburgh

The first of the 2012/13 Creative Conversations will be on Monday 29th October at 4 for 4.30 till 5.30 with wine and canapes afterwards (venue to follow with confirmation of attendance). Our first Creative Catalyst this session is Frank Crawford.

Frank is a former Chief Inspector (HMIe), forward thinker, innovator and enthusiastic biker. He has been centrally involved in the development of Scottish education and remains at the forefront of thinking. Frank will take a creative approach, sketching out ideas about meeting the demands of external evaluation, handling inspections, what self evaluation should really be and how we need to think about change and innovation. Frank is in great demand internationally so this is a great chance to catch up with him here in Edinburgh.

As with all previous Creative Conversations, David Cameron will facilitate the discussion and you are invited to continue the conversations afterwards with Frank, David and colleagues over wine and canapes!

This will be a popular Creative Conversation – please get back to me directly if you would like to attend and I’ll send full venue details and confirmation of your place next week.

I look forward to seeing you on the 29th.

Sound context on STEM Central

This week Education Scotland launched their Sound context which includes learning journeys from early to fourth level. The context builds the storyline through our ability to make sound, sound as a tool of communication, for example through talk or by using music to convey a message. It progresses on to sound as a tool of communication at a distance and our ability to manipulate sound.

The progression begins with What’s that sound? for early level, an exploration of sound sciences and technologies through constructive play. Make the Sound provides further opportunity for enquiry-based learning, and hands-on sciences and technologies in  the context of sound.

How animals use soundsound applications and communicating through sound are three learning journeys for second level, to illustrate breadth and application, and the basis for progression to Engineering Sound at fourth level, developed in conjunction with SSERC.

This key online resource has had a significant refresh with many improvements made to the calculator to make it even easier to use. Curriculum for Excellence: making good assessment decisions 3–18

Click on the image for more info

Education Scotland, in partnership with SQA, has published a resource to support the making of good assessment decisions.  The resource consists of a ‘Wall’ poster and a ‘Desk’ poster.

The posters illustrate the stages of quality assurance when making assessment decisions. Assessment 3-18 must be valid, reliable, fair and manageable for all involved and must be consistently applied for all learners in all centres.

The posters can be used by local authorities, schools, colleges and other stakeholders to support the development of moderation/verification practices and as a platform for discussion.

Further support materials to exemplify these resources are in development and will be available by the end of the year.

New Political Literacy Resource

It provides information, materials, learning approaches, and links to many organisations relevant to democratic life in Scotland. Its coverage includes politics in daily life, a timeline of the development of the Scottish Parliament, and civil rights.

A century of Scots and Scotland on screen will be presented through a range of fascinating film footage from the Scottish Screen Archive and elsewhere – from the earliest representation of Scottishness on screen in the ‘Execution of Mary Queen of Scots’ (1895), through the depiction of Scottish life in documentary film-making, to the current explosion of award-winning films made in Scotland and by Scots.
NLS offer a FREE Cinema in the Past interactive workshop to guide pupils through the Scotland at the Movies exhibition to find out about the earliest films shown in Scotland and how Scotland has been portrayed on the big screen.  Experiences: SOC 2-01a; SOC 2-02a; SOC 2-04a
