The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) in Scotland works with over 37,000 young people each year. The young people are supported in developing skills for work and life and fulfilling their potential to have brighter futures. The DofE is committed to supporting colleges in Scotland to develop the DofE.

At this introductory session find out how the DofE programme complements existing activities and helps learners develop essential employability skills whilst recognising wider achievement.

You will hear about current practice within colleges and get an opportunity to participate in practical activities.

Refugee Week Scotland 2014

Community Celebrations Grant Application
Deadline: 3^rd March – 5pm

At the Scottish Refugee Council we have been busy organising a very exciting programme for Refugee Week Scotland 2014! It will run from 16^th – 22^nd June in venues across the country, and we’d love for as many organisations as possible to get involved this year. The 2014 theme is ‘Welcome’, so we want you to have a think about how ‘welcome’ is shown in your community.

The SRC are awarding grants of £100 – £450 to help small community organisations to organise your own events as part of Refugee Week Scotland 2014. We strongly encourage you to apply and to spread the word to any other organisations or community groups that you think may be interested!

There are two files attached below – an Application Form and Grant Application Guidance Notes. Please read them both before applying! Receiving the grant from the SRC is unfortunately not guaranteed, so to make sure you are in the best position for acceptance, we urge you to read through these Guidance Notes thoroughly. We are looking for ideas that explore the theme – ‘Welcome’ – and discuss all the different things that this word can mean. For example, your activity could:

– Explore how welcome is shown in your community

– Encourage people to share their experiences of how welcome they have been made to feel here

– Encourage people to share experiences of how they have welcomed life in Scotland

Most importantly, you must demonstrate how your event will appeal to other communities and general public, and how you plan to involve them! The Community Celebration Events are the first step towards wide-scale understanding and integration among asylum seeker, refugee and local communities across the whole of Scotland. We want to know how your event will help this become a reality!

The deadline for submission is Monday 3^rd March, 5pm. Please send all completed applications to arts@scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk

Samantha Cedermark, a Primary Drama Teacher working at Crossford P.S. in Fife, is hoping to organise a Primary Teachers Drama CPD event in Edinburgh sometime in the Autumn of this year with David Farmer, author of several books on ideas for teaching Drama. The event would also be of use to Secondary Drama Teachers with regards to teaching S1 and S2.

Hidden Stories’ Animation Competition

Red Kite Animation and Edinburgh Museums & Galleries present an exciting animation competition designed to celebrate Edinburgh’s rich heritage and the art of animation.

Budding animators are invited to submit short animated films of 1-3 minutes, based upon either a real or imagined backstory to an object of their choice, housed in one of Edinburgh Museums & Galleries, including the City Art Centre, Museum of Childhood, Laursiton Castle and the Museums Store.

Submissions from any groups or individuals are invited for anyone living or studying in Scotland in the following three competition categories :

Primary School age

Secondary School age

Matriculated students in Further or Higher Education.

2014 Fringe Schools Poster Competition

There is still plenty of time to enter the 2014 Fringe Schools Poster Competition and be in with a chance to win £750 for your school! The winning design will become the official poster for the 2014 Fringe and all shortlisted entries will feature in a special exhibition in Edinburgh during the Festival Fringe.

SEBN National Good Practice Conference 2014

Education Scotland is taking forward capacity building activities to promote support for children and young people with social, emotional and behavioural needs (SEBN). This conference offers the chance to draw upon good practice in schools and communities active in this field across Scotland.

The conference will include a keynote address by Alastair Delaney, Strategic Director for Families, Inclusion and Local Authorities and an update from the Inclusion Team in Education Scotland including HM Inspectors, Senior Education Officers and Development Officers within the team. Practitioner-led workshops will showcase a wide variety of best practice in helping children and young people with SEBN, from throughout Scotland and from a variety of sectors. In response to popular demand after Paul’s successful Creative Conversation ‘How do we capture and measure creativity?’ for Forth Valley Creative Learning last year, we are very excited that Paul is able to open our 2014 programme of Creative Conversations.

Young people today are confronted with a tough, complex and deeply challenging environment in which to grow up. Some thrive on it, some find coping strategies, others are destroyed by it. What we know is that those young people who manage most effectively in this environment have the capacity to understand where they are coming from and to imagine different futures. In this conversation, we will explore the role that culture and creativity plays in developing this form of resilience. We will look at the combination of skills that underpins resilience, and the places where these can be learnt. Most of all we see whether the creative and cultural programmes can make a significant difference to the outcomes of young people here.

Rapture Theatre Company Education Project

Rapture Theatre Company, in association with Mull Theatre, will be touring their spring season production of the Scottish comedy Uncle Varick to theatre venues across Scotland from April – June, 2014.

Uncle Varick, written by artist and writer John Byrne (author of Tutti Frutti and The Slab Boys), is a raucously funny adaptation of Chekov’s classic play Uncle Vanya, relocated to 1960’s rural Scotland.

Set against a sensational sixties soundtrack, arranged and performed by Dave “Wildcat” Anderson, the production stars

Scottish theatre legend Jimmy Chisholm (Para Handy and High Road) and is directed by Michael Emans.

Education Programme

Rapture Theatre Company are currently developing their education programme to ensure a relevant and sustainable approach to learning through creative participation.

As part of this programme, a pilot project involving the up-coming production of Uncle Varick is in progress. The intention for this project is to offer a CPD opportunity for up to six teachers from several Local Authorities to work in partnership with the company, resulting in a learning template which compliments the production and will be made available for use within schools across Scotland. The project will focus on the subject of “Adaptation” exploring it from the different perspective of the creative processes involved in writing and producing a successful adaptation. It is also our hope to introduce a series of mentoring and training placements for schools as well as develop our learning programme through the offer of Masterclasses and Participation & Engagement schemes (FREE TRANSPORT – funding dependent).
