Medieval Construction Science Show comes to St Andrews!

Historic Scotland are bringing their Medieval science show to St Andrews Cathedral, Fife. 

This interactive show aimed at P4-S1 pupils follows the journey of a block of stone from a quarry to its place at the top of an arch, exploring the science behind medieval buildings as it goes and covering topics such as friction, gravity, pulleys, levers and arches.

We have the following slots available on a first come first served basis (shows last 50 minutes):

Tues 6th November – 1.00 pm

Thurs 8th November – 10.30 am

Mon 12th November – 1.00 pm

Tues 13th November – 10.30 am

Thu 15th November – 1.00 pm

Shows are £1.50 per pupil and travel subsidies of 75% are available to help with transport costs

Scottish Opera Connect – Call for Auditions!

Connect is made up of two strands, Connect Chorus and Connect Orchestra, and is a truly unique programme which gives aspiring young singers and musicians the chance to develop their knowledge, technique and skill with the help of Scotland’s top opera professionals. Plus, next year’s Connect members will also have the chance to be involved in the international project for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games cultural programme, so there’s never been a better time to sign up.
 
The 2013/14 programme runs from September 2013 to April 2014. Entrance is based on an application and audition process.

The deadline to apply is Monday 3 December 2012 with auditions in January 2013.

Professional Recognition Certificate in Creativity

Professional Recognition in ‘Creativity’.   Deadline for submissions Monday 3rd December 2012 to be eligible for the national award ceremony in this new category in the Scottish Parliament on the evening of January 29th 2013.

Hundreds of teachers have had their knowledge and skills recognised and been awarded with a certificate in Professional Recognition. We want you to join the group now being awarded the new category of ‘Creativity’. This will include dance, music, visual art, creativity in science, drama. In fact creativity covers a huge range of subjects.

Professional recognition allows registered teachers to focus their CPD in particular areas of interest, and gain recognition for enhancing their knowledge and experience.

21st Century Zoo – The Role of the Modern Zoo

Why not find out more about the modern zoo and join the free one day Global Classroom Conference at Edinburgh Zoo on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th November 2012?

Find out if zoos really make a difference to the many species on the IUCN Red List under categories such as ‘Critically Endangered’

Join us, as students take part in free workshops to help answer these questions and more:
· Is there a place for zoos in the 21st Century?
· Should we have captive breeding programmes?
· What role does a zoo play in conservation?

The conference runs 9:30am – 3:00pm and is suitable for S3 – S6 students.

Fife’s Creative Learning Network (FCLN) is delighted to announce their event ‘creativity exchange fife’ which will take place on Thursday 8 November 2012 from 3pm – 7pm at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.

This event is FREE for teachers and creative and cultural practitioners within Fife.

This event has been developed to:

  • showcase the impact creativity has on children and young people in their learning experiences and opportunities provided by educators and creative practitioners within Fife.
  • highlight the benefits of creative learning  
  • and to emphasise creativity as a cross-curricular theme within the context of Curriculum for Excellence.

The Programme is in development and will be published soon but advance bookings are now being taken by contacting cultural.partnerships@fife.gov.uk or phoning 01592 583255.  Please note places are limited.

Book Week Scotland- 26th November to 2nd December 2012

Scottish Book Trust will be running the first Book Week Scotland, a national celebration of books and reading, from 26th November to 2nd December 2012.

During Book Week Scotland we will be working with a wide range of partner organisations, including libraries, schools, museums and workplaces, to deliver a packed programme of free projects and events, bringing Scots of all ages and from all walks of life together to celebrate the pleasures of books and reading.

As part of the celebrations, we will be publishing a special book of writing celebrating Scotland‘s favourite places. Written by members of the public and well-known authors, thousands of copies of My Favourite Place will be distributed free throughout Scotland during Book Week Scotland. A free downloadable audio book will also be available.

We have appointed five Readers in Residence, each of whom will work with a Scottish library to stimulate interest in reading through a range of innovative projects. Learn what they plan to do here.

We will also be selecting members of the League of Extraordinary Booklovers from all the applications that have come in. Thanks to everyone who applied!

Free crafting in Fife

Nutshell Theatre are holding intergenerational home crafting, knitting, sewing and DIY workshops throughout September in the run up to their show in YOUR COMMUNITY!

We want to connect people in the community who have skills in any form of craft or trade to others who want to learn.

We’ll create a pictorial in each community as a record and celebration of the shared projects and exhibit them as part of the final show when it arrives in Fife. You will be invited to see your work on show and the play for free as part of the project.

Do you have a spare 60 – 90 minutes in your week to help elder and younger people learn a new skill or do you want to learn something new? If so, we are excited to hear from you!

We are looking for volunteers to come into our sessions and help teach/learn creative skills – sewing, painting etc.

Here’s a run down of what’s happening with the project at the moment.
